• The speaker seems credible, based on her position as a daughter of an alumnus. But most things that were stated were mere opinions. And to me he friend who works in the admissions office has no credibility. She does not see everybody that comes to the admissions office. When is the last time you saw an admissions office with only one chair for one person. With that said, she is basing her statistic on the people that she handles, and not the school as an entire.
Community College. She displays her expertise in the discussion of whether Obama’s proposal of free tuition college is accomplishable. Cubberly displays her views by using visual graphs and past experiences to question if the stance of free college tuition was built on solid foundation. She brings up the Recession of 2008 and how it had a large impact on the way community colleges are standing now. Especially when it comes to their ability to meet the needs of an exploding new mass of students, if Obama’s proposal is passed.
First they reveal that there is not enough information available for prospective students to research possible colleges to decide if that institution would be beneficial for them (Pg.220, Para.1). They proceed to document several efforts that attempt to solve this problem, such as the College Scorecard and PayScale college rankings (Pg. 220, Para.3). However they claim that these efforts are not enough and more must be done. The authors insist that in addition to providing information, students need assistance with increasing the ROI of their college education. They suggest that colleges should work to ensure that more of their students graduate (Pg.221, Para. 3). Also, students should have help discovering how much financial aid they are eligible for, as they often underestimate the amount they could earn (Pg. 122, Para. 2). Owen and Sawhill reveal that future college students are often confused when it comes to choosing an institution and finding help to graduate and pay tuition. Therefore they use pathos to connect with their reader’s compassion for these students. Suggestions on how to assist these students are offered. When it’s time for students in deciding which college they are going to attend, they consider many factors that will go into their learning experience. They take in their housing, meal, and transportation plans, all of which excite students for their college experience. However, the major factor that is a make it or break it deal for many, is if they will be able to afford schooling at a college. Many students take year off or decide to never come back to school due to the fact that college is expensive, even community college. The lack of students from being driven to attend, affects the student population at college. However, if community college were to be free it will cause a more diverse environment for students, causing them to have a different outlook in college. A reporter for US News and World Report, Joanne Jacobs, publishes the article, “As He Promotes It, Some Question Obama’s Free Community College Idea”. Where she is able to provide evidence on encouragement of free tuition. She argues that “with a more diverse group of students, community colleges could gain political capital and the funding that goes with it.” A diverse group of students will help create a new atmosphere for students and help create the college experience they seek. More students who are driven to learn, can potentially lead to new clubs being made, events, gatherings, etc. Having free tuition at community college will not only benefit students academically, but socially as well; which is all part of the development of their character.
One threat CCM faces is the twenty other county colleges and private colleges that it competes with. As more people are turning to community colleges for a more cost effective education, CCM must find ways to differentiate itself from its competitors. Another threat the institution faces is an economic recession in the Unites States.
