It is a great thing to be an American. You can do things you never thought were possible. Matt was a true American. Long grew up in Vietnam, Matt grew up in America. He was a brave, excited, and accepting child. When he was eight, he left behind his life. Only one day after the crash of the C-5A, Long was interviewed about going to America. He answered with anticipation especially the last question when he replied, “I am so happy to see you…At the airport!” Hours later, he bravely clambered into a new life. After, some time waiting, lift-off occured and the huge 747 jet hurtled hundreds of children into a new life. Long soon got bored, and he stared at his precious picture of his new American family. True to his word, Matt was glad to see
The day was finally here. It was November 11, 1990, the day that our family was to go to ¡®Land Of Liberty.¡¯ I heard so many different things about this country called United States of America and I was warned that it would be nothing you¡¯ve expected. The plane ride did not seem as long as it was; partly because I was lost in my own thoughts with hopes and anxiety. I thought about what I will become in this massive country I was headed and how soon I will adapt to this new culture and people.
What kind of an American am I? To summarize it up into one word, I'm a proud American. To explain the characteristics that the word proud means to me, I took each letter in the word and made a new word. The new words represent the kind of American I am.
When newspapers announced lincoln would attend ford's theater on the night of april 14th, booth decided to kill the president. He had played Ford’s theater for the second time just the previous month, and at any rate he was well known ; his presence there not arouse suspicion. Showing his card to a White House footman, he obtained entry to the box where Abraham and Mary Lincoln were enjoying the comedy Our American Cousin. Grant wasn’t there, only Major Henry R. Rathbone and his fiancee , Clara, seated on the far side of the box from where Booth entered around 10pm. Booth almost certainly ascertained this before entering
Isn’t it Great to Be an American Being an American goes deeper than just being born in the United States, and showing patriotism. Some people would define American as a feeling, rather than a title. When you are bound to a country, you become accustomed to the way of life that country has. Many people have this dream about America where they are able to live happily and free. America is different than other countries, it allows for people to express who they are however they please.
Who are americans what do they stand for? To me an American is being a citizen of the united states and involving yourself in the effort to keep America thriving.I believe that to be considered to be an American you do not need to be born in America, i believe that to be a true American you stand up for what you believe in. for example, Trevor Keever a young man that was fired from his job for wearing a pin that said “under god” on it stood up for what he believed in and he's a perfect example of a true american. You are proud to live in the country for example ian Michael was a war vet that travels the world sharing his story with others demonstrating his pride for being an american. To be an american is being proud that you can practice your own religion. Being an american is having freedom of speech no matter your gender or your race. For example many college students are using their freedom of speech by using their words to protest against the violence in the charlottesville violence. Being an american is to help your community and being supportive of others rights.
An ideal American is not just someone who was merely born in America, but rather it is someone who exhibits certain exemplary character traits in his everyday life. First, an ideal American needs to be honest because a country cannot be truly united if its people are not honest with each other. Next, he has to have integrity due to the line between savagery and altruism in a society hanging on its people's understanding of right and wrong. Also, he has to be knowledgeable about politics, so that he can vote effectively. A person’s vote can only better America if he is truly aware of what or who he is voting for and why. In addition, he needs to be courageous because the great freedoms that America enjoys are not products of Americans cowering
In our society nowadays, many people take our freedoms for granted. We live our lives as if we had it hard. They complain about all their work, high taxes, bills, corrupt government, and just how terrible people treat one another. Most American citizens believe we should be further ahead and better if you will. “How could we have gotten to this point?” many people ask. What these people don’t realize is how many have sacrificed themselves to help us to get here and make us a better country.
Philippines it was never below 75 degrees and the humidity was always almost at 100 making working in outdoor regions physically and emotionally draining. It was so hot the air conditioners would freeze up and we would have to wait for them to thaw again. After being apart for 6 months, my wife was able to come to the Philippines also. We moved into a small apartment off base and in order for protection, we had a German Shepard dog. This pet was trained to attack Philippine people. We needed protection because where we were located, American women were safe, but they didn’t like American males. American women could go wherever the pleased but American men had strict rules to follow. One day, it was lightning and thundering out and in our apartment building base we took Patsy, our protective German Shepard on a walk. The thunder scared Patsy which made her take off for home as fast as she possible could run. When we got to our apartment again there was a Philippine guard standing next to Patsy. Patsy was shaking because of the thunder and the guard was shaking because of
When we think of America, we think of the land of opportunities, freedom, and equality. However, there's another side to all the sayings about America; some good, some bad. My story starts on the first day of kindergarten at Our lady of Fatima back in 2007. I felt nervous, and scared; it was the first time I've been near people who were different from me. Their appearance, the way they talked, and the clothes they wore all seemed weird to me. Especially the way they talked, I couldn't understand some of the words they were saying. Were they saying someone's one name? The reason why this felt weird to me was, because of my previous school in India, where I stayed for two years to learn about my culture and education. All the people I've seen
Growing up in Ghana, I had heard a lot of things about the U.S. This was a country I had always wanted to visit; my prayer was answered when I got the opportunity to travel there. Arriving in a new environment came with many experiences. Adjusting with food, language and the weather was not easy. With the passage of time, however I have been able to0 adjust and fit it. This write-up therefore is to elaborate on my experiences since coming to U.S.
The speaker illustrates the struggle and several conflicts: between private and public, frivolity and necessity, the individual's need for expression and society's need for control.
My scores are so low they did not register on the scale in the assignment description in any area. I am truly American-made. I basically speak one language, except for a little German I remember from 3 years in high school. I have no desire to travel out of our great country. I barely travel outside of my state of Ohio. Until recently, I have had very little exposure to international. My scores seem to indicate that I am not world-minded, and barely nation-minded. I may be in a class all my own and be state-minded. At this point, I do not plan to change much.
While reading the freshman reader The True American, I discovered that we all could take away some important lessons from this book. This book is filled with many different lessons we all could learn, but it just depends on how you comprehend it. The first lesson I believe people can learn is that even if you get hurt by someone doesn’t mean you should want them to suffer. I think this lesson is important because to many people today always wants karma to happen to others, once they have done something to them. Another lesson I think people can learn from this book is never change your feelings about yourself and who you are. These lessons are just a couple of the lessons found in The True American.
The Long Way home was written by David Laskin, a passionate reader who graduated from Harvard College in 1975 with a degree in literature and history. Laskin in recent years has been writing about non-fiction events in which people are thrown into situations they cannot control, such as war, horrific weather, and genocide. In The Long Way Home, Laskin did not hold back details from the reader. His focus on the details are what made the monograph so impactful, and with that, they give the reader a very good sense of what these individuals in past-time hardships had to deal with. The horrors of the immigration boats, coming to an America that was nothing like they were told it was, and the unimaginable mental destruction of war; All of these
Studying in a foreign country is an interesting experience of an individual lifetime. One tends to learn a number of things relating to ways of life in a foreign land. Social, political and economic values and aspects are usually different from one region to another. Therefore, through studying abroad one is able to learn different issues about another society such as gender and sexuality issues, social class and race/ethnicity issues. Having come from a developing country studying in the U.S.A has been a great experience personally. This paper will attempt to provide a reflection of my personal experience on studying in the U.S by comparing the history of Angola and the U.S.
