Short Essay On Superweeds

Superweeds
Farmers around the globe are left wondering what is next for roundup ready seeds because we are starting to see a new strand of weeds that have more and more resistance towards these common herbicides that farmers use. I believe that the USDA needs to provide more funds for public and private research on the problem of superweeds. This is because we must find better alternatives for farmers and shift the focus onto something else in the agriculture industry away from the current chemical arms race against weeds.
Twenty years ago Monsanto engineered a glyphosate based herbicide called roundup that fit the needs of their genetically modified seeds that they produced. The roundup would kill off the pesky weeds that farmers didn’t …show more content…

Even in our genetically modified crops on our farm we are seeing the effects that 2,4-D has on the plants and when broadcasted on the plants via a sprayer within the next four to six hours we see the browning on the tips of the leaves. “By 2011 there were also three times as many herbicide-resistant weeds found in farmer's fields as there were in 2001” (Hoffman, 2013). This just proves how strong this herbicide is and the effects of how dangerous this herbicide actually is.
We need to do research and experiments on new types of herbicides that are both environmentally friendly, but at the same time be able to do the job that the glyphosate based roundup could do when Monsanto first brought it to the market. I believe that this step is a must within the next five to ten years, because if we don’t see any change in how superweeds and just your common garden weeds are handled then we could see an outbreak of superweeds that neither scientists nor farmers are ready to handle. Farmers all around the globe are starting to have to increase their herbicide application rate per acre and I myself am seeing this take place on the farm that I grew up on. Five years ago we were able to just spray on your normal roundup because every crop we grow is roundup ready, which basically means that the plants have a trait in their DNA cells that makes them be able to withstand the application broadcasted on them. Now on our
