On November 4, 1979, more than three thousand Iranian militant students stormed the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran (Kamps, 2006). Sixty-six Americans were seized and held hostage, causing a confrontation with the United States. This caused a struggle between the two nations and hurt a president’s term.
Secrecy held within the White House for about five months. On April 11, 1980 President Jimmy Carter held am meeting where he announced, “Gentlemen, I want you to know that I am seriously considering an attempt to rescue the hostages.” There was planning and practice for a rescue mission after the United States embassy of Tehran was taken over the previous November. Although everything was in place, the president was still very reluctant about the mission. He didn’t want any other issues with the Iranians and he wanted a nonlethal mission, even if the Iranians became hostile. In his mind there was already a lot to lose, especially with the human rights case with the former American regime.
In one-way or another, the soldiers had infiltrated the Iranians to gain access to the embassy. They grew their beards out, went unshaved, dyed their hair, wore Iranian favored clothing with hidden weaponry and water pockets, and American identifiers. They were down from seven aircrafts to five, and received new and reliable intelligence about the location of the hostages in the embassy compound, which would eliminate the need for some of the searching they had planned to do. They had to cut down a few men, but Beckwith was cautious with his decision-making. Beckwith knew that cutting anyone from the mission would hurt the mission the way.
