Introduction
Shopping has become easier to do now that almost everything is electronic. When it’s time to go back to school shopping, all you have to do is hop on the computer and find what you need, and have it delivered to your home. This makes it easier for parents with small children or even parents who live in Weatherford away from major shopping centers. Brick and mortar shopping took place in a storefront only; so, if you were looking for something specific and they didn’t have it, you would have to order it online and ship it to the store anyway. Now that stores have decided to utilize the internet people can do the ordering from the comfort of their own homes. My hypothesis is that online shopping will make brick and mortar shopping obsolete. While there are benefits to shopping online, there are also many downsides which will be discussed later on.
Research Method During the process of writing this paper I used Business Insider and Forbes as much as I could. I tried using the school database to my advantage but the information I needed wasn’t on the database I tried to use. When I used Google, I looked for companies that have closed due to heightened profits online. I researched what the history of online shopping was and how it started. Then I looked for businesses that have taken a dip in net revenue to review if they have benefited from online sales.
History of online shopping Before we talk about anything else, let’s get a brief history of eCommerce.
Consumers are making purchases daily. There are a number of occasions and reasons prompting people to shop. Special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays all contribute to retail sales. Sustaining one’s daily life through purchase of food, clothing, personal hygiene products and cleaning products also contributes to the economy through commerce. How do most people like to shop? In recent years a new alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar shopping, online shopping, has increased in popularity. “U.S. e-commerce sales grew from 72 billion U.S. dollars in 2002 to 228 billion U.S. dollars in 2010.” (“Online shopping,” n.d.,
One of the opportunities we have in today’s world is whether to buy online or go to a brick and mortar store to do our purchasing. The two offer great sales and promotions along with selections from which we can choose. As online shopping and brick and mortar may seem similar; however, both differ in pricing, convenience and selection.
I do not think that online sales will eventually cause brick and mortar businesses to cease to exist. One can determine that shopping at brick and mortar stores is deeply embedded into the American culture. There is a distrust by millions of consumers to give his or her personal information over the internet due to identity theft. The internet is quickly becoming a force in determining new ways for marketers to strategically influence consumers (Palmer, Simmons & Mason, 2014, p. 383,
“...bricks and mortar establishments still offer things you just can’t do online.” (Koss pg. 11). Koss uses her own statements against herself; she is correct when she presented the latter idea, but her entire article is based on the concept that Amazon.com is “pure evil”. And, though Amy Koss is concerned and persuaded that Amazon will abolish all bricks and mortar shops, this abolition will not ensue in the death of the American mall. There are too many comforts in having physical stores, and too many cons as to why America shouldn’t go completely digital. For all of those
When comparing two different ways of shopping most people do not even think about the difference, they do both and not even realize it. In today's society people shop while at work, after work and on the weekends, whenever time permits. Stop and think how can I get more time in the day for family or just myself? The best way to figure that out with all the recourses we have is to go into a store and spend time looking through racks and waiting in endless lines to just purchase something. I compared going into a store verses online shopping; to see which one will save you time and money.
Not only do people have to spend less time traveling to the store and walking around looking for what they need then waiting in line to pay for the goods, but they also have to spend less money because of gas prices and the discounts online businesses are offering to customers who purchase online. This is essentially hurting offline businesses because the less people who are going out shopping, the less people are seeing their stores and wanting to stop to shop at their store. Also, many people are losing their jobs because the number of customers that walk into stores is dropping so there is less need for employees inside stores.
The Internet has changed the way we do virtually everything, including the way we shop. However, shopping is not the only thing that has changed. In the last decade we have changed the way, we apply for loans, study, and even plan a vacation. Doing any of these things would have been impossible a few decades ago. At present, online banking, paying bills, ordering new services, and shopping online have become part of our daily lives. Traditional brick-and-mortar stores have been around much longer than online stores, but we cannot deny that online shopping is giving the traditional stores competition. Many consumers still choose to shop at regular brick-and-mortar stores because they like to see and
Convenience has been the deciding factor for the survival of online retail for the past couple of years. Whether it is the convenience of time or just simply having the luxury of items being shipped to any location, online shopping has become very popular. In Computer Weekly’s article “Are Bricks-and-Mortar stores the Next Step for Online Retail?” Clare McDonald discusses the future of online retail and the future for retail and small businesses. Agreeing with Miya Knights an IDC analyst,
The internet has made it possible to get everything people need delivered right to their house. From buying groceries online to going on Craigslist and buying a new couch. Back before internet was a thing people had to get up and leave the house to get their every day necessities but not any more. With so many online stores like E-bay, Amazon and Craigslist people don't have to leave their house at all instead they can get stuff delivered to them.
Customers now find traditional shopping draining and it designed for people who have greater patience than the times we live in now. Having the simple luxury of ordering from work and have your package right at you doorstep once you get home is much easier and less stress for customers. Kit Yarrow, a consumer research psychologist at Georgia Gate University mentions a great point of the hassles people interface with the traditional shopping, “People like the dressing room to be their bedroom” says Yarrow and this is a true statement. From finding a parking spot, paying of parking, waiting lines at the cashier, waiting on a vacant dressing rooms, babies crying etc. is now the different stress levels of shopping oppose to the luxury of placing an order online and simply have your item shipped the same day. A great example of “Changes in number of consumers in the market” (factor that cause in demand to change) and “Changes in number of producers’ in the market” (factor that cause in supply to change) is displayed in this case.
Now’s a day, most of the successful retailers are allows both the physical shopper to shop in store and the internet shopper to shop online. Physical shopper will have a change to see the items in person and try in on to make sure they fit on them. The internet shopper will benefit for shopping online in anytime and anywhere. They usually buy items online and collect in
Brick-and-mortar stores are losing their touch in the retail world. Not only has there been a huge surge in online-only stores in the last decade, but traditional retailers have had to up their online game.
Brick and mortar business still exist due to they have been around since society’s inception and they further have many advantages against online stores as well as some disadvantages. Likewise, brick and mortar still exist because they are essentially the only types of business that exist within small towns and the types of retailers that consumers are accustomed to. Many small towns do not venture into online stores because they are familiar and loyal to the town 's brick and mortar retail stores in which they purchase from. They trust these stores and the owners and rely on them for purchases. Furthermore, brick and mortar need to continually find innovative ways in which to continue to attract its customers in a time of many new technological advances and people are becoming more aware of ways in which to purchase items without having to leave the comforts of their own home. Therefore, now more brick and mortar businesses are starting to suffer due to the advances of people looking for cheaper prices instead
In the era of rapid development of information technology, online shopping into people's life, especially young people. Online shopping is a blow to the store, so people would compare the advantages and the disadvantages between shopping for goods online and buying goods in store. I think they have their own advantages and disadvantages, and online shopping and shopping in store are both important.
Nowadays with the ever rapid development and increasing popularity of the information technology, shopping on the internet has been a fashion especially among the youngsters. But some people think brick and mortal stores are better than online stores. In my opinion, online shopping has more benefits in modern capitalist countries. Although traditional shopping can buy merchandise directly, online shopping is not only more convenient for people to buy it, but it is easier to compare goods than traditional shopping, and it also promotes economic development and promotes the development of other industries.
