Times have changed. The internet and smartphones were only a dream 50 years ago and now they are used in every aspect of our day to day lives. Technology’s impact on the modern world can be considered a good thing. We are now connected to others like never before. Many different types of computers are currently used in education, the workforce, and entertainment. It has revolutionized the way we do things forever and this is extremely evident in some teen’s entertainment of choice: role playing games with stimulated violence. Games such as “Tag” and “Cops and Robbers” have been outgrown and now teenagers are playing games such as “Killer.” Teens are playing video games on councils such as the Xbox and Playstation with stimulated violence. …show more content…
Sometimes students have to blow off some steam and just have fun. In the article “Shooting In the Dark” by Benedict Carey, taken from the New York Times, Carey states that video games may cause less real life murders and mass shootings because the games allow people to act how they want without hurting actual living people. “It could be that the games provide “an outlet” that satisfies violent urges in some players — a theory that many psychologists dismiss but that many players believe. Or the two trends may be entirely unrelated.” (Carey, 2013, p.2) People that are angry or feel like acting violent can now do so outside of the real world and they can hurt people that are not real. Instead of actually killing the person that gamers are mad at, they can kill people that don’t actually exist. This allows the world around us to be safe and many would be murderers to be rational. Carey goes on to write how the games actually cause a decrease in crime. “ Violence rates are seasonal, generally higher in summer than in winter; so are video game sales, which peak during the holidays.”(Carey, 2013, p.2) In fact, in the article “Violent Video Games May Stop Crime By Keeping Criminals Busy Playing Violent Video Games.” Evan Dashevsky says that as violent video games become more popular, violent crimes decrease. Dashevsky states: “The crime rate in the US has sharply decreased as video games have continually upped the viscera factor.”(Dashevsky, 2013, p.1) Instead of committing crimes when they are bored or feel like acting out, teens now have a legal way to blow off some steam and get an adrenaline
97% of teens ages 12-17 play video games today. They contribute to the growing industry of video games which is now at $21.53 billion (ProCon.org). In your life you have most likely played some type of video game, such as a game on your phone or on your computer. Did that game make you feel like you wanted to cause violence? Violent video games do not cause mass shootings, it allows kids to relieve their stress, and it is the competitive nature, not the violence in video games.
Moreover, many kids deal with violence and can’t control it. As a result of having issues with violence some people play video games to let their violence and anger out. People need to understand that “ [b]ut overall, violent crime is down in the US-indeed, as violent games have become more popular, violent crime has fallen." (Erik Kain 1) The more popular the game is studies show violent
Violent video games increase the amount of mass shootings every year. The violence in the video games teach kids and even some adults to do things that they normally wouldn't know how to do, the first person shooter effect teaches kids how to use a gun and more than that, teaches them that it's alright to use a gun anywhere. When kids are playing first person shooter games against their friends, it seems like a game to them, those kids think that it is fun to run around chasing your friend with a gun and try to kill them, these games are also like target practice for them. Teaching these kids those skills prepares them for school shootings, abusing their families, and even causing them to talk back to their parents, other family members, teachers, and any other adults that could stand in their way. Adults who play first person shooter video games could be playing them for fun, what they were intended for, but when ever mass shootings occur like the one in Las Vegas at the Jason Aldean concert, or the one in
Did you know that according to Dr. Bret Conrad, the majority of gamers believe that video game violence has few, if any harmful effects on them personally? Well, many people today play games with simulated violence ranging from games like “Killer” to games like Grand Theft Auto. One example, “Killer”, takes place in multiple New York City high schools at the end of the year. It consists of two teams, each student is assigned a person to shoot and they have to shoot them before they are shot. The students have to use water pistols to shoot their person. Once they are killed, their game is over. While some agree that games with simulated violence are perilous for teens, games with simulated violence are beneficial for teens because they help kids with problem solving skills, keep them busy and helps them help others.
According to U.S. News, “video game sales are one of the biggest markets in the U.S. and with that juvenile crime rates have decreased.” Because of violent video games many teens and young adults are playing the games instead of going outside and committing crimes. According to BBC News, “the long term consequences of crime and actual violent behavior, there is no evidence linking violent video games with that. Violent video games are played by millions of people, and very few commit crimes connected to playing violent video
“According to data recently released by The NPD Group, in 2012, U.S. video game software sales reached $6.7 billion (174.8 million units) and computer game sales were $380 million (13.2 million units)” (Improving Economy). To many, the violent video game industry has turned all adolescents into mass murderers. However, they’re absolutely wrong. Very seldom do adolescents who play violent video games commit acts of violence, and the ones who do usually have a mental disorder. Instead of blaming the tragedies that occur on violent video games, the news media should explain to people that a large percentage of young males play violent video games, indicating that the two are uncorrelated. They should alternatively research other possible solutions to the crisis. In lieu of negatively affecting people’s lives, video games could potentially improve their lives!
Hundreds of studies have been done to determine whether violent video games will really make juveniles more violent. Randomized experiments were used in several studies to examine the short-term effect of violent video games (Anderson and Berkowitz et al. 90). In these studies, children were randomly assigned to play violent or nonviolent video games and then were observed when given an opportunity to be aggressive. The result was that children who played violent video games usually behaved aggressively.
Violence in video games has been proved to raise the aggression on video gamers in the short and long term, whether it’s in their language, attitude or actions. Also video games not only cause this but they also decrease prosocial behavior and empathy (Anderson, 2010). Violent video games have been one of the main reasons why students decide to shoot everyone in an educational institution like the well known Columbine Massacre in 1999. “[They] liked to play Doom (a computer game) in the afternoons”,“No one can say for sure why...theories including...violent video games (Doom)” (Rosenberg, Unknown). As we can see very clearly violent video games
Many who play video games will agree, it’s easy to get addicted. Even more so is that you could get emotionally connected to that game. Those games, especially violent ones, can be an outlet of aggression for those who feel more angry. However, what happens when this outlet does not fulfil the satisfaction of letting out aggression anymore? What if someone went out into the real world and did the actions in their violent games? As you can see, this could totally happen and this is why games that simulate violence could cause aggression in some people (DO VIDEO GAMES CAUSE VIOLENCE?). This evidence shows that even if people play violent games to let their aggression out, it may not do the job and they could go do crimes out in the real world. People who do these crimes inspired by video games usually do this to let out their aggression or do it because they enjoy it. Another piece of evidence is that those who are addicted to violent games have more aggression. According to Forbes.com, “The Aurora shooter, James Holmes, the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, they’re all described as essentially being addicted to video games.”
The effects of violent video games on children have been debated for years. Video games such as Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and Fallout all include violent acts and behaviors that may affect young adults. Many children these days seem to be stuck to the screen, playing these types of games very frequently. This idea of how many young adults play violent video games is further developed in No Link Between Videogames and Violence by Tony Jarmusz, when Tony Jarmusz talks about the facts video games and who plays them by stating, “Violence sells, and estimates place the global video games market at almost $100 billion… one-third of American gamers are between the ages of 8 and 18, and they spend 73 minutes a day playing video games” (2). This
Contrary to popular belief, violent video games may not play into violent crimes as much as you may think. Many people think that violent video games might be the main reason that violent crimes like mass shootings and murders happen. Another factor that they bring into the argument is that video games isolate the players from the rest of society and makes them become antisocial. Groups are trying to ban video games due to these reason. Being somebody who plays violent video games, especially first person shooters, I do not see this the same way as others do. I see these games as ways to pass my free time, have fun playing with friends, and to meet new people from all over. I believe that people blame these harmless games due to a lack of investigation into the offenders past where they don’t see prior problems and they want to just blame it on an inanimate object rather than the person at fault. This could also be because of a lack of investigation of the benefits that video games bring also. I’m writing this to bring awareness to the benefits of games rather than what people have heard from other sources of media.
With the popularity and production of video games constantly rising since the mid 90s, you would also imagine that the violent and illegal acts in teens would have also risen, but that is not the case. In fact, violent acts in youth have steadily decreased during the past 20 years, and are projected to continue to fall. While there could be many reasons for this drop in violence, the most likely one is that the inclusion of violence in video games actually provides an outlet for frustrated and angry teens to safely discharge their anger in the digital world, and not upon anyone in the real world. Video games offer an area in which your mind can explore and wander with no fear of consequences, so in
Violent video games cause dangerous and, aggressive thoughts to appear, and may make people act out in violent ways causing them to become harmful to their surroundings. In addition to making the player aggressive, violent video games are also linked to criminal activity. According to the article, "Do Games like 'Grand Theft Auto V' Cause Real-World Violence?", “The Aurora shooter, James Holmes, the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, they’re all described as essentially being addicted to video games” (Kain 1). Becoming addicted to video games, like these people, can reflect in actions, making gamers dangerous. On top of causing aggression playing violent video games, “Increases the likelihood that a person will commit a violent crime, like murder or assault” (Carey 1). Playing violent video games is harmful to the player and, their surroundings because they can have sudden outbursts causing harm to others. Video games, especially addictive, and violent games, are linked to criminal activity and, make people addicted, and harmful. Some people think that if they distract children with enjoyable video games it will cause them to be too distracted to do anything else, like violent behavior.
One reason video games are advantageous is they keep criminals from committing crimes in the streets. In fact, violent video games can be attributed to a decrease in crime. As stated by the article “Violent video games may stop crime by keeping criminals busy playing violent video games”, “While a one percent increase in violent video games leads to a .03% decrease in violent crime, non-violent video games appear to have no effect” (Dashevsky). This quote shows violent video games can be attributed to a decrease in real world crime, a huge benefit on the global scale. Video games also prevent criminals from
Video games have become a major occupation of majority of the youth these days. They spend hours on end concentrating on video games, some of which are apparently very violent, yet this is actually the whole idea. Coming from the horse's mouth is an argument in support of video games coined from a video programmer's point of view, stating that violent video games allow people to do what they can not do in reality- virtual reality. ( http://www.theroc.org/roc-mag/textarch/roc-15/roc15-08.htm ) For instance, someone said to be having a bad day could use a violent video game to release stress by shooting down a couple hundred bad men than actually taking an AK-47 and spilling down a few brains down the
