Born in Iran in 1957, Shirin Neshat has lived in America since 1974 and currently lives in New York City. As a visual feminist artist, Shirin Neshat works with the representation of Middle Eastern women with the use of black and white photographs. Due to the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Neshat was unable to visit her mother country until 1990. However, since 1996 Neshat is banned from ever entering Iran.
Neshat is the fourth of five children of wealthy parents, brought up in the religious town of Qazvin in north-western Iran. Neshat's father was a physician and her mother a homemaker. As part of “Dance Houston 2013”, the “Ndani” was performed on April sixth of the year two thousands and thirteen at the Wortham center. The dance executed by a group of eight young dancers, among which Otis Berry, was choreographed by Shaté Edwards. Miss Edwards has an engaged, skillful, and powerful style. Her background includes jazz, tap, stepping, modern and more. She is a Houston, Texas native, who attended college in Atlanta, Georgia, and has performed a lot in the U.S and China and has participated in numerous productions.
David Njoka is a tight end for the Cleveland Browns. Almost everyone who has played with him knows him as the freak. It’s not because he is weird or anything like that, but Njoku is just more athletic than anyone has ever seen. He has an amazing ability to jump sky high. In college he was on the track team along with football. At track he was highly know for his jumping abilities. So when it came to football he used that ability to leap over defenders to score touchdowns. In the Miami Herald they called him a “ leaping, pass-catching freak.” When Njoku was in high school he became a champion jumper. Shere Khan arrived, demanding the man-cub for his meal, but was soon driven off by all of the wovles. Raksha (the mother wolf), named the man-cub Mowgli the Frog because of his hairlessness.

Desi Arnaz was an extremely famous actor and musician who was born in Cuba, but is technically an American in terms of Nationality. Desi was born on March 2, 1917 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. His last stand was on December 2, 1986 when he died of cancer at the age of sixty-nine. He had been experiencing health issues and problems for years before his death as soon after he was put in the hospital for the first time during his later years in 1981. During his earlier health complications, many hoped and prayed that all would pass and he would be fortunate enough to be healthy once again, but sadly, that was not the case. When Desi was very young, his life was not as great as it was going to become even though he was born into a very wealthy family.
Nihan Kurt is a Turkish immigrant who came in 2000 at the age of twenty-nine alone. Growing up, Nihan lived Gaziantep, a city in Turkey. When Nihan came to America, the first thing she learned to do was to drive and to be a babysitter.
Mina is the daughter of Uganda-born, parents of Indian descent. At the age of six, Mina, her family and other Asians were expelled from Uganda by dictator Idi Amin, who felt that Asians were getting disproportionately richer than the native people of Uganda. Before they left, Mina's father's best friend told them; Uganda is for black African's only, and for it, they must leave. (Only many years later Mina's father learned that his best African friend, risked his life, which he ultimately lost), and money, to get him and his family out safely from Uganda). When Mina's family arrived in the United States, they brought with them the feelings of hurt, injustice, loss, rejection, and betrayal. Ashiro was born from a Glabrezu and a Succubus into a noble family. The demon lord’s kin was murdered in a battle leaving him without a prince. In 1964 the Wasilla-Knik Centennial Committee was created to honor the 100th anniversary of Alaska's induction into the United States. Dorothy G. Page, the chairmen of the committee, had the idea to race a portion of the Iditarod Trail. Joe Redington Sr. was the main support when he and volunteers cleared up a portion of the trail. They held their first race, known as the Iditarod Trail Seppala Memorial Race in honor of Leonhard Seppala.
I participated in NSSHLA last year. I attended the socials, and it allowed me to meet other individuals in the major. I went to several of the guest speakers last year. I was so interesting to hear from people actually working in the field. Being apart of this club makes me even more excited about this major.
In Nahid Rachlin’s memoir, “Persian Girls”, the author describes her life in Iran and later in America as a woman, refusing to accept both Muslim and Iranian cultural norms. This plays an important role in the lives of many characters, choosing the sometimes hard decision to break apart from cultural standards. Characters that are faced with this difficult choice include her brothers Cyrus and Parviz, her older sister Pari and Nahid herself.

Nujood grew up in Yemen with her father, mother and many siblings. Her father also had another wife named Dowla who had five children and Nujood would refer to her as her aunt. Her mother bore 16 children, but lost four. Since there was no doctors in their city her mother had all her children at home with little help. Nujood’s siblings were Jamila, Mohammad, Mona, Fares, Haifa, Morad, Abdo, Assil, Khaled and Rawdha.
