Other than his mom dying when he was 17, Shipman had a pretty normal life. The question of why he killed so many of his patients still remains a mystery today. However, there are some conclusions people have made. Some believe it was because he witnessed his mother’s suffering and believed that sudden death at the end of a trusted and friendly physician’s syringe was a preferable option, others say that he hated women (most of his patients were women) for some unusual reason, or that he was obsessed with power-power that was perhaps exemplified by his choosing the time and manner of his own death and ultimately frustrating those who wanted to know “why”?

Just because these women have a job, does not mean that they are able to free themselves from poverty.
After reading the editorial “Ship of Fools” the author gives multiple reasons that support her claim, that letting Abby sail solo around the world was foolish and dangerous. One of the reasons is how the author stated how much work and effort was put into saving Abby when her boat was hit by the rogue wave. But she also talked about the amount of money that was wasted in saving her because all of this could have been prevented if her parents said no and didn’t let her. Another reason that the author brought up is that sometimes when you're a parent you’re going to have to be protective, especially in these types of situations. She even gave an example of how she gets nervous when her own 5-year-old daughter goes on the monkey bars. The last
Joseph Conrad once said, “It is the mark of an inexperienced man not to believe in luck”. Nailer, the main character of Paolo Bacigalupi’s book Ship Breaker, wasn’t born lucky, he was born a ship breaker. Ship breakers are child and adult laborers who spend their days starving, poor, and working away to take the anything valuable off old ships for the big companies. Throughout Nailer’s life, he has suffered through various unfortunate events. However, with a strong belief of luck and having other superstitions, his life becomes more manageable. In Ship Breaker, Paolo Bacigalupi demonstrates that being superstitious and believing in various degrees of luck allows people to more easily feel in control of uncontrollable situations.

Shipman, who was originally thought of to be a well respected physician, graduated medical school in 1970 from Leeds School of Medicine. Upon graduating, Shipman took a position working at an infirmary. According to popular opinion it is believed that this where Dr.Shipman first began his murders. In 1974 Dr.Shipman was hired as a general practitioner, and within a year he was fired for forging prescriptions to himself for the drug pethidine, or more commonly known as demerol. Demerol is a medication prescribed to patients who are suffering in severe pain. It is an opiate derivative, and contrary to original belief that is has a lower risk of addiction, it is found to be just as addictive as any other opiate. Pethidine abuse has been linked to serotonin syndrome, or “serotonin toxicity, this is an adverse drug reaction to serotonergic agents.” (http://patient.info/doctor/serotonin-syndrome) Serotonin toxicity can be confusing to diagnose because it can mimic symptoms of other psychiatric disorders. Cognitive effects may include headache, agitation, hypomania, mental confusion, and hallucinations. The extent of Dr.Shipman’s drug use was not widely discussed, however it may be medically relevant to his case if he were to to be suffering some sort of mania as an adverse side effect to the drugs he was abusing, that may be connected to his mental state when he commit his murders. Fortunately for Dr.Shipman, being fired did not threaten his career. He was able to maintain
Unfortunately, there are several theories on Shipman’s motive for murdering over two-hundred victims by lethal doses of morphine, and with his suicide, the likelihood of getting the truth died with Shipman. Speculation, states that he killed to avenge his mother’s death, due to the traumatic event that took place when he was seventeen years old. Other reports stated he was practicing euthanasia. Furthermore, the official reports speculated that he was addicted to killing much like his addiction to morphine. Subsequently, reports state that he enjoyed viewing the process of death and he loved being in control. Although this fatal fascination may have stemmed from the death of his mother, there was a valuable connection between the family physician visiting and the relief the drug gave his mother after the injections ("Dr. Harold Shipman", 2012).

The United States of America has not always been the world superpower that it is today. The same goes for its Navy. In the first several years of existence, the United States Navy was not a formidable fighting force. The young nation was hesitant to invest in a navy for many reasons, one of them being to prevent provoking the world powers of the time, France and Britain. On top of that, navies were very expensive to build and required a significant amount of resources to maintain, which the U.S. did not have at the time. To say that the United States Navy was ill prepared for war would be a dramatic understatement. The U.S. had a total of fifteen ships in its entire naval fleet compared to the might of the Royal Navy which possessed over six hundred warships. Even with the odds stacked against the U.S., President Madison declared war on 18 JUN 1812. The lack of size and power of the navy at the time would make it extremely difficult to satisfy the needs of the newly founded nation.
