Physical strength is important because a person’s body can only withstand so much. According to Grayson Schaffer in “The Value of a Sherpa Life” the Sherpa porters struggle to survive in the hardships and conditions they face. He writes, “The men who were struck were carrying 80-pound loads to Camps I and II, or they were on their way back to base camp” (1). This shows how hard the Sherpas work and the weight of the supplies they have to withstand. Similarly, members on the James Caird have to withstand the major hurricane and massive waves coming over the boat. In “The Voyage if the James Caird” Caroline Alexander states, “Rain, hail, sleet, and snow hammered down, and by noon the gale had become a full-fledged hurricane whipping a mountainous …show more content…
Alexander mentions how the crew on the James Caird has to keep healthy to survive. She says, “The staple of their diet was “hoosh,” a brick of beef protein, lard, oatmeal, sugar and salt originally intended as sledging rations for the transcontinental trek that now lay on the fringe of a memory” (4). This shows us how the crew has to be strong and eat well to remain healthy on their journey. Similarly, the Sherpas struggle to maintain good health in their jobs. “You only need to review the numbers that I reported last year: lower pay, lower standards for rescue insurance, lower payouts on accidental-death coverage in general” (Schaffer 6). The author tells us that the Sherpas do not make as much money as they deserve, and they need to have good physical strength to maintain the health the can’t afford. People in Puerto Rico have less resources to stay alive and healthy, so they are relying on their physical strength to stay alive. In a recent U.S. News article, the author states “Considering Puerto Rico's hazardous conditions and limited health care services, that number is sure to rise.” These people do not have the necessary health care services they need, so they only have themselves and their strength. Physical strength is so important for people in distress to keep them …show more content…
Sherpas need good physical strength to survive. “Without the hard work of the Sherpa porters, it would be largely impossible for Americans and Europeans with slightly above-average physiology, and well above-average disposable income, to scale the world's tallest mountain” (Schaffer 1). Without the help and strength of Sherpas, many people would not survive the climb. The crew members on the Caird need to be strong to survive their tough journey. “Worsley's report of the conversation was intended as a tribute to Shackleton’s courage in undertaking such a dangerous voyage (Alexander 6). The author is telling us that the crew had to be strong to survive this treacherous journey. The people with better physical strength had greater chances of survival during Hurricane Maria. “Starting on Sept. 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria swamped Puerto Rico with 20 inches of rain and battered it with 150 mph winds for over 30 hours” (Conversation). These people had to uses their strength to get through the floods and harsh winds of the hurricane. With good physical strength, people can live the long lives the
I think that determination is definitely a big part of survival. In the book Hatchet, Brian was determined when he was making the fire. It took him a long time to figure out how to do it and then it took him quite a while to get it started, but all the time, he kept going because he was so determined. He tried many different times in many different ways. Ernest Shackleton was a man who tried to sail to Antarctica in a ship with a crew, but got stuck in an iceberg. Also, in a video about Ernest Shackleton, he was obviously very
The Hispanic member of the interview expresses maintaining health as eating often with immediate family and frequently with close relatives. Main dishes include rice, beans, enchiladas, tortillas and other recipes custom to their culture. They pray often to maintain spiritual health. Thin is a sign as a problem and they would rather be more obese then skinny. Objective data concludes both parents and children are all obese. They protect health by having God Fathers and Mothers who help to watch out and take care of their children. They are involved in the Catholic Church and state that they attend weekly as a family and participate in sacred ordinances that allow them to grow mentally, spiritually, and physically. Birth control is seen as unacceptable. Seeking medical attention first from health care is not their first option, they state they would rather seek help from parents, grandparents, or friends for remedies or treatments before seeking help from a medical professional. They were familiar with the term curandero which is a holistic healer, but they did not state having ever used such services for their family in particular.
Thankfully, Louie’s determination to survive helped keep him and one of his crew members alive to see their family again. After capture, forced into working and starved nearly to death at camps they found themselves in an even more difficult situation. Triumphant in his efforts to survive, Louie withstood more than his physical and mental strength should have allowed. Like Rosa Parks, a determined Louie fought for what he believed, through the pain he kept a bar raised over his head when “The Bird” wanted to punish him: “Five more minutes passed, then ten. Louie’s arms began to waver and go numb. His body shook. The beam tipped. ...Louie had held the beam aloft for thirty-seven minutes “. (p302)Louie also showed this determination when he tried to keep his crew's mental state in check, he told them of his mother's food: “So began a thrice-daily ritual on the raft, with pumpkin pie and spaghetti being the favorite subjects. “(p153). Courage allowed him and his crew to survive longer; staying alive provided more challenges. Louie once hung the side of a raft, dodging bullets and kicking away sharks even when weak and starved. “As quickly as he could, Louie pulled himself along the cord until he reached the raft. He grabbed its wall and lifted himself clear of the shark “.(p162) This shows Louie, weak physically, was able to withstand what seemed almost
Individuals of higher income levels often have private insurance that allows them to see a physician on a regular basis. These individuals are able to prevent many diseases before they exacerbate. They often eat low fat diets or plant based diets. They are educated on their nutritional health and often make better choices when choosing the different types foods to eat. Due to their income, they can afford to eat healthy food and make healthy food choices. Even though these individuals may be predisposed to certain diseases, their diets prevent them from becoming prevalent in their lives. Due to the individual’s socioeconomic status they make enough money that they don’t stress about the necessities in life. These individuals live in areas such as Roswell, Johns Creek. Alpharetta, Buckhead, Kennesaw, and Stockbridge. Individuals of a poor economic status have limited access to healthcare. These individuals often have Medicaid, Medicare, or no health insurance at all. They often eat diets that are high in fat. Individuals of poor economic status aren’t often educated about eating healthy. They often eat unhealthy because it is too expensive to eat healthy. These individuals often receive government subsidiaries such as WIC and SNAP benefits for themselves and their children. There aren’t many healthy food stores if any at all in these neighborhoods. Stores such as Whole Foods, Sprout, and Trader Joe’s aren’t located in poverty stricken communities because the individuals can’t afford the prices. It is a disadvantage that the grocery chains in the neighborhood don’t offer the resident a healthier option. Individuals of poor economic status often fight chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and often cancer. They often live sedentary lifestyles that contribute to these diseases. They eat diets that are high in red meats one that contributes to
Poor nutrition in the United States is indeed a scary factor that continues to lead our citizens to chronic healthcare conditions. The article notes “Health People 2020 states the most affected are non-White, Hispanic adult populations are disproportionately affected by obesity” (Kaiser Foundation Hospital, 2014, p. 6)
Mental Strength is the most valuable strength in a survival situation because it can not be lost or taken away from someone. According to Caroline Alexander’s article “The Voyage of the James Caird” the crew of the James Caird needed mental strength to survive the dangerous journey. In the article she writes “Worsley, despite the rank discomfort, was in his element. He was conscious of being in the midst of a great adventure---which had been his life’s ambition”(Alexander 185). Here it is shown that despite the physical challenges Worsley was still able to maintain his mental strength which kept him going. Similar to the crew of the James Caird Sherpas that climb Mt. Everest to transport goods also need mental strength to make it through their job. In the article “The Value of the Sherpa Life” by Grayson Schaffer it states “And perhaps most significantly, the amount of time that Sherpas spend making laps through the deadly Khumbu Icefall and up the Lhotse Face”(Schaffer 218). Schaffer explains that despite the physically grueling laps their mental strength which kept them going was maintained. Similar to the Sherpas of Mt. Everest and the crew of the James Caird in Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night he needed mental strength to survive in the concentration camps of World War II. In the book it says “An icy wind was blowing violently. But we marched without faltering”(Wiesel 85). Shown here is that even when the physical conditions were anything but pleasant Eliezer
He knows that he can sail through it only losing six men, but also knows if he goes slow or something happens, he may end up losing even more. These traits help show us that through hardships, you may able to come out a stronger and better
Physical fitness is very important for firefighters, because if they were weak then they probably shouldn’t be a firefighter since there are so many tasks they perform that require them to have muscular strength and endurance. Firefighters go through a series of boot camps that help them prepare for the difficult job of saving lives. One must also be fearless of heights for fighting fires on tall buildings or bridges or some fore of architecture. A firefighter’s physical state also helps them with rigorous drills. The physical abilities of a firefighter can help with real life situations, for example; carrying operating tools, pulling hose lines, search and rescue missions, or pushing ceilings or walls down.
Many people have dreamed of climbing the tallest mountain on earth, Mount Everest. However one must possess certain physical and mental attributes to accomplish this giant feat. “Courage is not having the strength to go on: it's going on when you don't have the strength.” Ed Viesturs knows first-hand what having courage is all about although you’ve used all your strength. He kept going to reach his goal even after he faced life threatening obstacles.
Another influence on life expectancy in the United States is preventative health measures. Typically education, income level, geographic location (in a city versus in the country or closer to medical assistance versus less access to medical assistance) and race are major factors on life expectancy. People who live in poverty have poor health, typically from malnutrition, stress and possible exposure to elements such as physical abuse, alcoholism, inadequate or nonexistent housing and drug addictions. Weight is an important factor in affecting health. Being underweight is unhealthy but so is being overweight. Unfortunately, 54.7% of all American adults are overweight and 19.5% are obese. Poverty also plays a factor, as 28.7% of women in poverty are considered to be overweight and 21.7% of men compared to 13.7% of women and 17.7% of men in higher income groups. Interestingly, women are 49.5% more likely than men to be a healthy weight. Only 36.3% of men are estimated to be at a healthy weight. (Tischler 2007). This is a factor in heart disease in men and a possible influence in their higher risk factor at a younger age. Americans with higher education level and more income also tend to have better access to
Louie and Phil used all of their strength to overcome the obstacles they went through, both physically and mentally. Their physical strength was tested throughout their entire journey. Being stranded on the ocean took the initial toll on Louie and Phil’s bodies by diminishing them down to 67-87 and 80 pounds, respectively. Both of them had weighed around 150 pounds when they had crashed. Louie’s mental strength was tested as well. He started to have hallucinations of people singing in the clouds, most likely due to dehydration. The two retained their strength though, by focusing on their survival and trying to remain sane. Their optimism also had a great influence on how strong they were. In Ruth Robertson’s (2016) article “The Strength of Optimism” she states, “There are many benefits to having a more optimistic mindset. Research tells us that it can lengthen your life, determine how you overcome life’s obstacles, build resilience and manage the risks of developing depressive disorders and other mental health issues” (para. 3). Robertson is saying that optimism can help you through the hard times that life throws at us. A positive mindset can transform a life or death situation. Louie even retained a lot of physical strength while he was in the prisoner of war camps. Near the end of his imprisonment he would have to carry literal tons back and forth for hours. The Bird, one of the Japanese guards and Louie’s worst
Strength was not just physically being strong but emotionally being able to keep themselves together. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet had to try and keep herself together when she knew that Romeo was going to be banished after he killed her cousin Tybalt. She was being as strong as she could before she went to Friar Laurence for advice. After she left the church she knew that she was going to have to be strong and lie to her family about her marriage with Paris and that it was not going to happen. After she had taken the poison and Romeo found her in the tomb he had to try and be strong as well, but he just could not live without her, so he killed himself to be with her. Strength is also a theme for the book The Odyssey. Odysseus left his whole family behind when he went to war. His mother could not deal with the fact that he might have been killed in the war so she tried to be strong but she later committed suicide. Penelope also was strong and raised her child while her husband was gone to war and lived everyday as if her husband was still alive. Telemachus was pretty strong too because he had no father to tell him how to be a man, all he had was the men that were trying to marry his mother. Strength was a big part of both books. In real life being strong is important. Not only in a relationship, but in any matter. If your parents are going through a divorce, that could also be an example of you being strong. Strength is more than just physical strength, it is also
I am going to discuss the issue of obesity among American minorities. Elma Dieppa, cousin of Helen Casillas, still wonders if her beloved family member would be alive today if she had been more conscious of her weight contribution to her diabetes. "She refused to take care of herself by not watching what she consumed or finding time during her day to exercise," Dieppa explains, reminiscing her as the “life of the party” during family reunions. At the age of 44, Casillas unfortunately suffered a fatal heart attack. Although Casillas worked in the medical field, the perception of her disease was skewed believing that she was not in fact over
Peak physical shape and sharpness of mind were essential qualities for these heroes in the story. However, there was a little more to their character than what met the eye. These men had all the brute force in the world topped off with a touch of humanity. Humanity allowed them to put themselves in the shoes of the people trapped in the storm. They could then see the gravity of the situation and the importance of their role in their safety. But then again, many readers knew of the danger the crews were in and felt sorry and scared for them at the same time. But you wouldn’t catch them out there in the middle of the storm, like a PJ or a pilot, risking their neck for people they did not know. So there had to be another element inside these men in order to separate them from the rest of mankind. They had what some may call, a hint of insanity. They were not insane to take on the task; rather, they had to have a lack of care for their own safety in order to ensure the safety of others. Not many people would be willing to dive into such waters and risk their own lives such as Dave Moore did for the Satori. The perfect storm provided a perfect opportunity for heroes to submerge. Many ships’ crews were saved because of the humanity and heroism of these rescue teams. But for some ships, like the Andrea Gail, they were caught in the middle of an unforgiving storm and did not have a chance at being rescued. The
All too often we do not think about our personal strength until a situation arises that causes us to use this natural attribute that we know as strength.
