Shelly Chartier, also known as the official "catfisher", is a Canadian woman who committed fraud by using fake identity on social media. Catfishing is when a person creates a fake internet profile, to interact with someone online using another persons image as their profile picture. Shelly acted as 3-4 different people and she maintained a friendship and a romantic relationship between all of them without the actual person knowing she was behind every character on social media. It is known that she appeared as a NBA player, Chris Anderson, his friend, and, a famous LA model, Paris Dylan. In her attempt to act as someone else Shelly received money, blackmailed people, sent death threats to Paris, got Chris arrested, she broke hearts and humiliated everyone involved. For three years Shelly lived a double life, and due to her criminal behavior, she served 18 months in jail.
Shelly Chartier crime is familiar to the social control theory. Social control theorists maintain that all people have the potential to violate the law and that modern society presents many opportunities for illegal activity. (pg. 180) Social media is the gateway to fraud and identity theft for so many criminals. These criminals often are often introverts and feel excluded from the world and social media can make them feel needed, desired and wanted. Travis Hirschi

One might say, “Mary Bethune did not really save Florida or protect it from the outside world”, or, “She did not participate in the military.” So basically, she’s not qualified to be a hero? Hirschi’s theory of social bond, sometimes referred to as control theory is different from the other theories in criminology because it assumes that people would be deviant when left to their own devices and looks to discover why the individual chooses to stay within the social confines of the law when illegal methods would be more beneficial. The social bond theory
Rachel Stallard is quite possibly one of the most dedicated teachers I have ever had at KC. Her love for journalism and her students is evident and attests that teachers can truly have a tremendous amount of influence on their students. To say I've enjoyed ever minute of this class would be an understatement and quite frankly it was the class I looked forward to the most throughout the semester. Her way of teaching is unique and the class is never boring. It will always be one the classes I look back on fondly during my time at KC.
Andrè Derain painted Madame Matisse au kimono in the pivotal summer of 1905. Derain and his fellow painter and companion, Henri Matisse spent the summer in the French fishing town of Collioure working alongside one another. They developed a colourful and expressive style renowned as Fauvism which is now considered the first twentieth century movement in modern art. The experimentation and artworks created in Collioure were exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris later that year. The exhibition proved to be hugely influential as it launched the beginning of an avant-garde movement within the art world. These early works also led to the publicity that awarded Derain with a successful commission in London the following year. While Derain is

First time I have been National Gallery of Art and this place was very gorgeous place, even one day not enough to see all the arts. I notice people coming from all the round the world just sees the arts. Another thing I notice college students taking pictures asking question about the pictures with guider. Then I realize how important this places. However, I spend more than couple hours to see some of the attractive arts. I wanted to spend more time see the all the geniuses’ artist, but my time is limited. Some time I cannot even say those are real arts because it is very similar to photograph. I want to draw arts like that when I see those arts. All the arts are attracted me, but I chose one art because I learn about this artist and it will be easier to describe.
Social control is when a person unites to society that prevents them from violating rules therefore; if the bond weakens, they are free to commit delinquent acts. Travis Hirschi, a sociologist, argued that the social bond a person maintains with society contains the commitment to the pursuit of conventional activities, such as
Social control theory is used to help one understand and reduce levels of criminal activity. It is based upon the idea that an individual’s basic belief system, morals, values, commitments and relationships foster a lawful environment. Most individuals who possess these values and beliefs tend to have a level of self-control over their actions and are consequently prepared to remain on the correct side of the law. Furthermore, social control theory is used to examine how society can influence criminal behaviour. It also emphasizes the idea that when an individual is involved and in-touch with their community, they are less likely to commit acts of delinquency.
Accordingly, we look at how understanding how each theory can not only help define criminal behavior, but how each theory could expand or compliment another theory. The idea that social environments have become more important is essential to understanding individual behaviors and how they adapt. Social learning, discusses the behavior of individuals is influenced by both positive and negative consequences. This knowledge demonstrates the more involvement that an individual has with a criminal activity has, the more they learn about that activity and receive messages about the interactions. However, the individual doesn’t have to be an expert in the activity to participate within it. The messages that the individual would receive again affects how not only they view those around them but themselves as
In chapter 7 of our text, Sociology, A Brief Introduction by Richard Schaefer, social control is discussed. According to the text, “Social control is defined as techniques and strategies for preventing deviant human behavior in any society (Schaefer, 159).” An example used in the text to explain this concept was “informal norms” such as dress codes introduced by peer groups in order to, “govern the behavior of their members (Schaefer, 159).” Within society, a term that is commonly known as deviance stems from social control. Deviance is “exhibiting behavior that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society (Schaefer. 165).” Deviant behavior goes against the social norms of society.
Control Theory is the theory of support. This theory demonstrates an individual's social bonds in relation to their performance. Since certain bonds are stronger in certain kinds of lifestyles the affects will be different in all situations. Control theorists believe “in the rationality of the criminal act that the individual behaves in a criminal manner for ordinary reasons, and this behavior arises out of the person’s own free will” (Moyer, 2001, 133). However, deviant behavior is prevalent in today’s society. It is a major problem concerning adolescents all across the world. This theory carries serious paternalistic roles.
The definition of General Theory of Crime, by our book states, “According to Gottfredson and Hirschi, a developmental theory that modifies social control theory by integrating concepts from biosocial, psychological, routine activities, and rational choice theories.” The theorists that formed this idea were, Michael Gottfredson and Travis Hirschi (Siegel, 308).
Many people have different theories as to why crime exists. Some believe crime happens because of the individual’s culture, education (or lack there of), or even their race. Others believe crime is associated with whom we surround ourselves with. There are three sociological theories that suggest why crime happens in society; they are social learning theory, social control theory, and social reaction (labeling) theory. These theories suggest it is our relationships and social interactions that influence our behavior.
