Definition of “Duty of Care”
Duty of care is a legal term and this is a definition from a legal dictionary.
Duty of care n: A requirement, that a person act toward others and the public with watchfulness, attention, caution and prudence that a reasonable person in the circumstances would. If a person's actions do not meet this standard of care, then the acts are considered negligent, and any damages resulting may be claimed in a lawsuit for negligence.

The duty of care affects my own work role as its my duty of care to ensure that the service users in the organisation I care for are safe and protected from any sort of abuse. It is important that I receive training so that I am able to recognise and understand signs of abuse. It is also my responsibility and duty to record all information if an accident or incident occurs. I must protect the service users as well as respect their needs.
A significant element of a practitioner’s role in protecting themselves would be to read policies and procedures that are put in place to safeguard them and children or young people in their care. In a care setting a professional can protect themselves by:

A duty of care is a legal obligation to protect wellbeing and prevent harm within the health and social care sector. The duty of care is very important as it does not only protect the service users but the service provider’s as well. There are 7 principles all care workers must follow in order to care for the service users effectively. I will be investigating the quality of care given by service providers in both a child and adult health and social care settings. if the duty of care is not followed, implications can occur, for example it is a carers duty of care to report any signs of abuse they may notice on a patient, reporting this to higher authority etc could possibly save that service users life. My responsibility as a care worker is to be aware of the various policies and legislations that will facilitate good practice when supporting my clients to access services and facilities. I am also expected to monitor and evaluate the service provided to ensure it is meeting the needs of the client.

Prior to the course I had basic understanding of safeguarding. As a support worker delivering care to the vulnerable, With brief and little knowledge on legislation; prevention, policy and procedures; personal ethics also dictated to me as a reasonable caregiver the need to care for vulnerable adults assigned to me and keep them safe from harm.
