In the American agricultural industry, half a million women work in fields and most are undocumented. This deprives them of control over their own bodies. Dolores Huerta deemed the case of sexual violence in the agricultural industry as an epidemic. Not only does intense sexual violence occur in the fields, but the positions these women are in leave them more vulnerable than most victims of sexual violence. Many of the women are non-English speaking Hispanics.A large fraction of these women are undocumented workers with immense financial responsibility and these isolated jobs are often the most reliable source of income. These factors cause great vulnerability because many of these women risk losing their jobs and deportation if they come forward and confront their attacker. Women in this situation are left with no voice or power to speak their minds and change the system, therefore, it is unsurprising that within this industry, no one has been criminally charged with assault, and a successful civil suit is difficult to pursue. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission views the issue of sexual assault in the agricultural industry as one of the biggest problems requiring immediate action. Bill Tamayo was assigned to investigate ways to help women in the fields obtain legal help and end this problem. There is a high price paid when working in the fields. An account told by one of the women speaking the documentary stated that a foreman of a farm told a man that there was no
Rebecca Solnit’s article focuses on the ways male violence negatively affects women. Harassment from men directed at women keep women from speaking up, and many women are living in constant fear of male violence. They live in a constant state of fear because they are aware male violence is taking place around them. Women are also afraid of potential male violence because men openly express authoritative behavior. She explains men feel they have the validity to control and abuse women. Specifically, a man will approach a woman with the expectation that the woman will return the man with a sexual favor. For example, “a woman was stabbed after she rebuffed a man’s sexual advances while she walked in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood late Monday night…”
The Human Rights Watch did a survey asking 52 farmworker women if they have been sexually harassed, and nearly all of them have, or they know someone who has. Female farmworkers are not safe from their coworkers and bosses. In Jose Padilla and David Bacon’s article “How to Protect Female Farmworkers,” they voice their opinions about how women working in the fields are getting sexually harassed and do not report it.They come up with a few solutions to this ongoing problem. I agree with their ideas on how to fix the harassment going on in the agriculture field.
There is a level of degree that the most violent types of crimes are more severe toward women. Solnit combines rape and violence, “We have an abundance of rape and violence against women in this country and on this earth though it’s almost never treated as a civil rights or even human rights issues.”
Because the violence that battered woman face is continual and the woman are not on equal physical grounds, they usually “strike” back, and this is usually reflected in the circumstances surrounding the killing like using a weapon (Schuller & Vidmar, 1992). Furthermore, because of the unequal fighting grounds, woman usually do not attack during a direct confrontation (i.e. during a beating), but rather at some point outside of a confrontation, usually due to perceiving that there is no escape from her situation other than attacking back (Schuller & Vidmar, 1992).
This famous playwright Shakespeare once said, “By your entrances and exits shall ye be known.” General Amos became the Marine Corps’ 35th Commandant in 2010, taking the helm as fiscal storm clouds darkened the horizon. His leadership, always attentive to the welfare of the Corps and his Marines, focused keenly on the future: budget cuts, force structure reductions, the balance of operational and family readiness in the shadow of intense operational tempo, and the pending drawdown from the wartime footing of a service more than a decade at war. General Amos faced an additional challenge: one not previously addressed on the scale required to be useful as a historical reference. The challenge is that of sexual assault: a challenge that
Many of the women farm workers believe there is no help for them, which is why they keep quiet and don’t turn to authorities. Although, there are always people willing to help. Those people that these women can turn to in dealing with their work conditions is the company “U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.” They work to help people in poor working conditions and who are sexually harassed/assaulted within the working force.
Sexual violence is sickeningly commonplace. In the United States, federal data suggests a new sexual assault occurs every two minutes. (http://www.wcsap.org/how-often-does-it-happen)
Despite federal laws issued to combat sexual violence, each year 4,000 college women report to school officials that they've been sexually assaulted. What happens after they file those reports has stirred debate on campuses across the country, leaving parents and students fearful that colleges may not be the ivory towers of security and integrity that appear on their recruitment pamphlets.
Throughout history, women have continuously found themselves as the subjects of oppression. Although the treatment of women has drastically changed over time, women are still exposed to much of the violence that exists today. Per the National Organization for Women, “young women, low-income women and some minorities are disproportionately victims of domestic violence and rape” (National Organization for Women, 2016). Women-centered violence is highly prevalent and reoccurring all over the world, even in our local communities. Individuals may be hesitant to consider just how much violence against women affects their communities.
Violence against women has been ever-present throughout time and place in our world and in recorded history. Although violence against women encompasses a whole range of related acts, rape and sexual assault perpetrated against women is the focus of this paper. Men and boys are also victims of sexual assault, but the numbers of women who are sexual assaulted are much higher. We will be examining the definition of rape, the effects of rape, issues associated with rape, theories about the cause of rape and engage in some speculation on what can be done to improve the safety of women.
They receive less resources even when they have higher chances of being a victim of these horrible crimes. It outrages me that they receive less resources that other women do such as ill trained police staff, minimal forensic testing, and lower conviction rates. When this message is sent to them it discourages them from reporting their assaults, which is unacceptable. Resources, programs, and justice should be readily available to all survivors of sexual and domestic violence. These problems need to be addressed and changed in order for change to be made, which will only happen if communities stop ignoring the
The current immigration system in the United States is broken and unjust. When we use the condition of a woman and her position in society, it allows the understanding of the impact that immigration has at the social, economic and cultural level. This process can maintain the women in situations of disadvantage and subordination in relation to the men. Because undocumented migration has turned into a political
Women, girls, men, and boys are vulnerable victims of sexual assaults every day in our country. While females experience much higher rates of sexual assaults than males. The problem that this country faces is the lack of being able to track rapist, in addition to the victims that chose not to report their assault of being raped to the police. Issues of under reporting comes from the victims with multiple reasons that hinders them from reporting these heinous criminal acts. Thus, the sad realization is that the perpetrator is usually some one that you know, that you would of never of thought that they could and would, and do sexually assault you.
Some women suffer such severe abuse, where they have no one to turn to, even their
People in a community will continually do acts of violence when they perceived that the act is approved by the society. When translated into violence against women, prevalence would be high if the people perceived it to be acceptable.
