Funding For Sexual Research
Resistance to sex research has caused large misunderstanding about our human sexuality. This resistance has been shaped by our society’s moral views. Our society’s perceptions have greatly influence the type of sexual research conducted and the funding that has gone towards sexual research. This has overall influenced the outcome of sexual research has had.
Society’s perception on what men and women are supposed to do sexually has largely effected sexual research funding. When Dr. Kinsey first sought funding for sexual research people were hesitant at first but were intrigued enough to do a trail investment. When Dr. Kinsey was first starting his research is was common for women and men to be virgins upon marriage

Sexuality in our society is not something that is easy for most people to talk about. Dr. Kinsey and his assistances showed how our human emotions can cause a listener to react to a speaker when interviewing about intimate questions. For example, When Dr. Kinsey’s assistance were interviewing him and his wife about their sex histories there were a couple times when the research assistance showed surprise on their face when the speaker answered unpredictably. This can cause the speaker to feel uncomfortable and change how they answer further questions. This happened when Dr. Kinsey and his assistant were taking the history of a rather unpleasant man. The man they were interviewing had sexual relations that were rather inappropriate for society’s moral views, such as having intimate relations with under aged children. This caused the assistant to become uncomfortable and storm out. In reaction to the assistant leaving the speakers answers slightly changed as the interview finished up. Due to these sensitivity issues regarding sexual research, researchers have needed to adjust experiments accordingly. If our society had less resistance regarding human sexuality it would be easier for researchers to listen without reacting
Sex was such a horrible topic to talk about, but a biologist of Indiana University introduced a scale that broke the silence. The silence changed due to this biologist named Alfred C. Kinsey (1894-1956). Kinsey broke the silence because before the scale everyone would keep their sexual orientation to themselves and most likely did not tell anyone. In other words, he was a great influence to people because since then people have become a bit more open about themselves. The importance of Kinsey is that he has conducted several of researches. For instance, on one of his research he found out that many people had sexual experiences with both female
In the article "Can't Ask, Can't Tell: How institutional Review Boards Keep Sex in the Closet" by Janice M Irvine, the social scientists are frustrated with the Institutional Review Boards for stymied research about sexuality. The IRBs believe that the topic of sexuality is too sensitive for studies, and it is has been considered to be one of the special cases that do not want to present to the public. For decades, the IRBs' works are heavily influenced by the Belmont's three principles: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. However, sexuality has become one of the topics that the IRBs would automatically decline because they believe that it is not qualified any of the Belmont's three principles. In 2011, Irvine conducted a survey
This assignment will help you explore the way a topic in human sexuality is covered in two very different sources: 1) a scholarly journal; and 2) a popular media source. For more information to help you understand the difference between those sources, please use this link to the APU library http://apus.libanswers.com/a.php?qid=5312. You will summarize a scholarly article (peer-reviewed, evidence-based, original research) and one popular media article on your topic. Once you see how the topic is covered in each source, you will write a paper:
Albert Kinsey helped change the American Public’s preconceptions on sexuality by publishing two bestselling books from 1947 to 1953 on the topic. Titled “American Sexual Behavior” and “Sexual Behavior in the Human Female”, these books both confirmed and challenged the generally held beliefs dealing with marriage, sexual gratification, and sexual orientation. Sex was deemed important for a healthy marriage, adultery was frequent and homosexuals weren’t weird anomalies.
Alfred Kinsey’s extensive research into sexual orientation has brought about some of the greatest and perhaps most controversial findings of the 20th century. His findings range from sexual activities to sexual orientation, including “facts” that were considered shocking at the time of their publication, such as 10% of men are gay and almost half men have had adulterous affairs, etc. Not only have they changed the ways people view sex and sexual ethnics in the U.S., but these findings are also still deeply embedded in the public imagination. However, a closer look at the great man’s research reveals some major flaws. Even though nobody has yet been able to replicate the research due to its magnitude, in the 21st century, we have other approaches to explore the same field, the results of which both confirm and challenge Alfred Kinsey’s findings.
In the article, author Vern L. Bullough provided an in-depth look at the research done by sexologist Alfred Kinsey and explaining the contributions he made in the field. The article claimed how Kinsey studied taboo topics and interviewed his students about their lives, a practice never conceived of being done before. The author explained how Kinsley’s controversial work was challenged by Thurman Rice, a, “bacteriology professor who had written extensively on sex, primarily from the view of eugenics” (Bullough 56). These claims were meant to display how society viewed sex as a topic that was not an area of interest for many, but the research done by Kinsley helped push the boundary on the topic and inspire other sexologists to pursue the field.
Taboo subjects like masturbation and orgasms are topics that Alfred Kinsey dedicated his study too. Kinsey’s research produced astonishing results that shocked America to its core, thus forever changing the general beliefs surrounding sexual behavior. Alfred Kinsey controversial sex study caused the breakdown of morality in America by presenting bias beliefs, corrupting public norms, and negatively influencing the culture.
It is clear to see how social values have influenced research on sexuality in the past. Not only did society dictate what was right and proper for a scientist to study, but it condemned those who sought answers for the “improper” areas of study to career damnation. Even more discouraging is the way in which modern day society still puts limits on the research done in sexual physiology. In an era so tolerant and open-minded, one would assume that any researcher in honest quest for truth would be welcomed (and funded) with open arms. Unfortunately, this is not the case. In an article titled Long After Kinsey, Only the Brave Study Sex, Benedict Carey describes such limits on a study attempted in 2003, “In July 2003, for instance, Congress threatened to shut down several highly-regarded sex studies, including one of emotion and arousal, and another of massage parlor workers. And last summer health officials refused to finance a widely anticipated
In the movie, Kinsey, it was obvious that society had a lack of knowledge about sex and about people’s sexual activities. Alfred Kinsey changed the way that people thought about sex. He did an important and monumental thing informing people and answering people’s questions about sex. At one point in the movie it showed Kinsey reading a script from the bible where boys were supposed to control their nocturnal emissions, a natural and uncontrollable act of puberty, or they would be looked down upon by God. A quote from the movie “it is the lord’s work to help youth fight and resist temptation.” I agree with the movie in that the more a behavior is prohibited the more strongly it becomes desired. In 1998, David L.Weis conducted an assessment on 39 theoretical frameworks of sexuality research, including the social script that referred to Simon and Gagnon's account. Base on his findings, he presents the conceivable explanatory model of social scripts.
In the United States of America, 1.8 percent of men and 1.5 percent of women identify themselves as homosexuals (Volokh 1). This means that in a group of one hundred men, around two of them are homosexuals, and the same goes for women. The background regarding sexual orientation is vast, and a lot of different definitions of the concept have been introduced throughout time. Nevertheless, although homosexuality is fairly common in the United States, many people still misunderstand it. The different types of sexual orientations and their difference from other sexual-related terms, such as gender role and gender identity, are all confused by the general population. Sadly, even today, there are people that believe in a right or wrong sexual orientation. Moreover, the origins of sexual orientation are highly discussed and debated by the scientific community, with theories including biological and environmental explanations. The importance of such origins resides in the fact that this nature-nurture debate is capable of changing people’s perspectives towards homosexuality, and even though the media has done a great job by transforming any sex-related topic from a taboo to an acceptable conversation point, society still needs to grasp a lot about sexual orientation. Particularly, the fact that sexual orientation is a complex, largely misunderstood human characteristic resulting from a combination of biological and environmental factors that play an essential role in society’s
During the 1950’s, many American educational videos were polarized towards the male gender, especially in sexual education videos for adolescents. After reviewing a sexual education video that was produced during the 1950’s, I can infer that society during this time period was very male-dominated and strictly abided by traditional gender roles since it prioritized the curriculum of a male’s reproductive system. Although today’s society no longer defines a woman as a passive, stay-at-home mother and has started to embrace the minority of individuals who identify with various sexualities and genders, I can deduce that there were no major changes in sexual education from the 1950’s and now. This is because there is a lack for comprehensive sexual
Throughout history, definitions of sexuality within a culture are created and then changed time after time. During these changes, we have seen the impact and power one individual or group can have over others. In the Late Nineteenth Century into the Early Twentieth Century, we see multiple groups of people and or authorities taking control over the idea of sex and how they believe society is being impacted by sex. At this point in time, society had groups of people who believed they had the power to control how society as whole viewed and acted upon sex. Those particular groups and ideas changed many lives and the overall definition of sexuality within that culture.
According to both Bonk and The Kinsey Institute, the study of sex has had its controversy since the very beginning. Dr. Kinsey began his research after he began teaching a class on the coordination of new marriage at Indiana University. (The Kinsey Institute) It was then that Kinsey began his research on sexual physiology. It was after he began his research that the controversy began for Kinsey. Controversy is just one of the issues that are encountered while conducting sexual research.
Sex. It is everywhere. We see in television shows. In magazines. On the Internet. But sex is still seen as a taboo subject in our society. I believe that being educated about sexuality is vitally important to one health. Understanding one’s body and how it impacts your life. To understand how your beliefs about sexuality and sex have developed one needs to look back over the years and how your beliefs were engrained in your life. This essay will be based on my reflection by looking back on my sexual history on how and what have significantly impacted my development of sexuality. The focus will be on my reflection of answering the sexual history questions and how I have changed and developed over the years. It is important to analyze and reflect to understand how I came to be today, that the past has created my ideas and beliefs about sex and sexuality that have shaped me.
