This article provides relevant information to my essay on sexism. It also provides a brief overview on the novel and plot. This source also explains several events in history at the time the novel was written including civil rights movements. Although my essay does not mention about civil rights movements, this article helped provide additional information on sexism since it explained the issues that were brought by The Association of Sothern Women. I chose to focus more toward the issues in the novel and did not mention issues regarding civil rights movements during the time the novel was written.

In the age of advanced technology, the media is one of the most reliable sources of information. However that source cannot always be trusted; it can be used as a device to brainwash or influence our society. The media are used to control of what we should see and believe while leaving out the rest of the story; which caused stereotypes of other races and genders. We are facing two of the most sensitive controversies of our advanced society: racism and sexism, which were made even worse by the stereotypes created by the mass media. American people should educate themselves to prevent the further spreading of racism and sexism through stereotype.

Everywhere I go, I see people wearing a multitude of different clothing, it’s something all humans do, we all have our own way of dressing. I get judged based on the things I wear, just how people are judged based on their race. What people wear can say a lot about them and make others act or think a certain way. Clothes can show the wearer’s thoughts, social status, enjoyments, jobs, and even more. People can often figure these things out just based on their clothes without even thinking about it. However, assumptions and stereotypes of any kind can be highly inaccurate. Clothism is as real as racism and sexism. Judging people based on the clothes they wear is the same as judging people based on their race.

In today’s society, women find it offensive when men do things such as pay for dinner or open doors for them. I can understand that these women may feel as though guys don’t think they’re capable of handling themselves, however, I disagree that these acts should be seen as a form of modern sexism.

Sexism is a delicate subject that many people feel uncomfortable talking about. The definition of sexism is the prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender. It can affect any gender, but is commonly known as affecting women and girls. Many people will argue saying the United States is becoming more sexist than ever. It’s a man’s world. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are male dominated professions. But those fields would be nothing without women. The discoveries of DNA, isolation of embryonic stem cells, genetic markers linked to cancer, and pulsars were all made by brilliant women in their fields. Unfortunately throughout time these scientists have been discredited for their findings and called inferior by their male peers. While this situation can be seen in other jobs and environments it’s statistically proven that STEM have the least amount of women working in their fields. So is science sexist? No. Science itself isn’t to blame for this issue. Sexisms presence in STEM can be credited to the scientists themselves.

Prinz brings not only a new light to sexism, but explains why the reader could have come to participate in a culture riddled with gender difference. He explains that there are many factors that brought some to the conclusion (that women are inferior to men and should be treated as such) via many things, including the influence of history, biological differences, learned limitations, and stereotypes.

Sexism has always been a major issue for women. It seems that today, everyone has to be careful of what they say and do so as to avoid offending someone. Going to an all-schools girl’s school for over half of my life, I thought I would be immune to sexism at school and in my activities until I reached college. I am lucky that I don’t have to deal with sexism on a daily basis when it comes to my studies and the classroom, but it’s extremely disheartening that many girls face blatant discrimination whether at school or on the athletic field. Much to my dismay, I have experienced glaring sexism during Model United Nation simulations, which is a club that thrives on collaboration of peers and being cooperative. Nowadays, there are still a lot of powerless groups exist in this world, such as the group of women. The problem of gender sexism exists from the beginning of the history and still continues in today’s society. Women are still inferior to men in my country, whether from family and job status, social position and political views, women are treated unequal and disrespectful, therefore, this problem needs more abundant attention. “Sexism, like many forms of prejudice, only survives in a traditional environments and this is how it continues in China” from All-China Women’s Federation’s website, yet this problem is still happening in China, but there must be a way to solve it.
