On decemeber 18, 1865 slavery was abolished by Abraham Lincholn why has it become so easy for women and children to have their rights taken away from them? Many can argue that slavery doesnt exist in our society today, yet women all over suffer from slavery as they are taken and forced into the sex trafficking business. If slavery were truely abolished why is it so easy for women and children to become worthless and traded for a few dollars?

The United States has always been known for sticking their nose in places where it does not belong. America has been part of wars that could have been avoided, scandals that had nothing to do with the United States. Millions of lives over the years could have been spared if America would have just simply stayed where they belong. What if though, America feels like they have to get involved in forging affairs if they think it can cause or is causing a problem on American soil or with the Americans themselves? Human trafficking is issues that most people do not necessarily knows about or even really think about. There are several different types of human trafficking and smuggling crimes that are in today's society. The number one kind of human trafficking is sex trafficking. The handlers usually kidnap someone, ninety percent of the time, a girl under the age of eighteen, and sell them to different people all over the world for sexual reasons. The girls they kidnap and sell can be from the area or just passing through and get in the wrong place at the wrong time. Forced labor is the second most common type of human trafficking in the world. This is where a person takes advantage of a worker and changes labor laws to make them work longer hours or harder, more tiring jobs with very little pay. Victims of forced labor most of the time do not even know what is happening to them. Most of the people that get sucked into the forced labor trade are very vulnerable;

Each year about 17,500 individuals are brought into the United States and become victims of human trafficking. Every country has this problem and it has become the 3rd largest illegal industry worldwide.

Human sex trafficking and its sister category, Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking also referred to as DMST, (Kotrla,K. 2010) is the most common form of modern day slavery. In the United States there are an estimated 293,000 youth who fall under high risk factor or DMST (Walker-Rodriguez, A. & Hill, R. 2011). Many men prey on the at risk youth to make a fortune for themselves. DMST exposes the youth to a life filled with violence, abuse that is both mental and physical as well as a isolation. Sex Trafficking in the U.S. is an article by Rachel Chinapen found inside the textbook Women’s Voices Feminist Vision. In this article the the author discusses the reality of sex trafficking in the United States still going on today. According to one of her sources, Love 146, More than 100,000 U.S children are forced to engage in prostitution or pornography in combination to $32 billion being spent worldwide on trafficking. The two examples that Chinapen gave were two women named Shandra Woworuntu and Ms. Richards. Shandra Woworuntu came to the U. S. from Indonesia to pursue a job in the hotel business but as soon as she arrived her passport and other identification was taken. For years she suffered in sex trafficking she was able to escape.

Human trafficking doesn’t happen in third world countries only. It doesn’t just happen to poor people and it certainly doesn’t solely happen to women. It is present here in the USA but it is hidden, and even worse, so are their victims. They are everywhere yet invisible. They are silently crying for our help through their eyes and smiles. According to Polaris, “…the prevalence of sex trafficking in the United States is still unknown, we do know that women, children, and men are being sold for sex against their will in cities and towns in all 50 states”. Human trafficking can happen to anyone even to Theresa Flores, the author of “The slave across the street”(“Sex trafficking” 2015). An average 15 year old American girl, coming from a privileged background and a respected family became a victim of sex trafficking and through her book, she convinces us that human trafficking doesn’t have a specific demographic.

Sex trafficking is a problem that sweeps across the nation. The number of children and teens on the street makes them more at risk of being taken into human sex trafficking. According to the Covenant House Institute, more than two million kids in America will face a period of homelessness. As many as 20,000 kids are forced into prostitution by the human trafficking networks every year in the United States

Products from all over the world are being distributed and sold from other countries to people in the United States. Imports and exports to and from the U.S include products as wide ranged as food, clothes, and even people. Human trafficking is a worldwide problem, including the United States. Currently, there are approximately 20.9 million people enslaved throughout the world with 2.5 million located in the United States. About 14,500 - 17,500 of foreign nationals are trafficked into the United States every year (Human trafficking statistics). These statistics show that slavery is still alive and flourishing throughout the entire world. When humans are exchanged, exploited, and forced into prostitution, and involuntary labor, it is called human trafficking. Human trafficking is a very serious problem which has been going on for centuries; I believe spreading awareness is imperative to solving this ongoing problem. Unfortunately, these are not the only ways that people become a part of the sex trafficking industry. Another common way is to make fake colleges or fake study abroad programs. Parents give their approval for their kids to leave in the pursuit of a better career path, but sadly the end point is modern day slavery. In another situation, a girl could be promised a happy life with a businessman. There are even situations of when husbands sell their own wives (“The Freedom Project”). That is very hard to perceive, just like hearing about the shooting that happened from earlier in the paper. Sadly, nobody talks that much about sex slavery and the countless lives lost in it. Nobody really teaches people today of whom they should trust or not. Another popular way to get more victims is to become their boyfriend and traffickers are very good at it. Promises and presents from faithful boyfriends fool teenage girls very easily. When a pimp or a trafficker wins a girl’s trust; he can manipulate her and move her anywhere he wants in a promise of marrying her (Frundt). This way, a young innocent girl fails into a trap.

When looking for topics to research I wanted to do something that was a prominent problem in my hometown, which was Sex Trafficking (ST). Coming from Houston, Texas, Sex Trafficking has the 2nd largest home in Houston. The main highway I - 10 is the main road used to travel these victims to state lines to get them out of the country. A better definition of sex trafficking is when someone uses force, fraud or coercion to cause a commercial sex act with an adult or cause a minor to commit a commercial sex act. A commercial sex act is a list of things known as prostitution, pornography, and sexual performance done in exchange for any item of value, such as money, drugs, shelter, food, or clothes. In the United States alone 14,500 - 17,500 people are trafficked alone in the United States and 46% of it is from Texas. Most cases found on sex trafficking come from Women and Child, but there are a percentage of males that are trafficked, but because the act makes most feel degraded they refuse to report it. Also the effects it has on these victims is indescribable and many programs created and people there to help still can sometimes not get close to giving these victims the closure they need. This topic is important because it is a worldwide social issue that destroys not on the people physically taken and put into the trafficking but everyone that is involved in saving that person. Human trafficking has always been a though subject. Most Americans prefer to believe that this is a problem of the past, that it simply does not occur anymore. Others accept the fact that human trafficking exist, but in a far away reality, an incident homed only in poor, third world countries. This couldn’t be farther away from the truth. Human trafficking is a real and current problem in the United States, California being a hotspot for this issue, and with the Super Bowl in 2016 the problem will only get worse.

In order to help young women all over the world get the tools they need to get an education they need help from already developed countries. Devolved countries can make organizations to go educate these children in order for them to be more educated so they can provide for themselves (A life Wasted).

Sex trafficking is horrible and demeaning to woman that are taken advantage of when they are trying to better themselves. Our country can provide the victims the help they need when they ask for it and traffickers should carry heavier sentences, they should be made to pay for the rehab of their victims and have pay the victims restitution for the rest of the traffickers and/or the victims lives.

When people think of human sex trafficking, they are unaware that females are still being trafficked. Investigators have discovered that about 600,000 females are victims of sex trafficking every year and being profited on for about $30,000 each (Orme, Julie and Fariyal Ross-Sheriff 288). The traffickers see this as a business. Just like any other business, the traffickers have a supply and demand. The demand is the purchase made by the buyers or “Johns.” The victims are, of course, the supply. But without any demand, there would be no need for customers; therefore, no need to trafficked women (Utley). Sex trafficking can be diminished through teaching

The International Labor Organization estimated that there were 4.5 million victims trapped in forced sexual exploitation, or sex trafficking, globally. Most would believe that this is a problem that does not occur in the United States, but they would be wrong. In 2007 alone, 14,588 sex trafficking cases were reported in the United States and the problem is only getting worse. This research paper will discuss multiple topics such as the definition of sex trafficking, recruitment and those at risk, where it occurs, organizations, consequences, a healthcare provider’s role and a study on the attitudes of the public. The objective is to bring light to this problem and educate those who are reading (Polaris Project, 2016).
