Perpetrators of sex crimes committed against children often start by gaining the trust of potential victims and the adults in their lives’ by using a tactic called “grooming.” The purpose of this memo is to give the court a baseline understanding of what sex offender victim grooming is, its purpose, and techniques. Because of the extensive amount of research and information on this topic, this paper does not detail all of the grooming techniques used by child sex offenders to groom potential victims.
As stated earlier, Gershowitz originally scored as a level-2 sex offender, but he was mitigated to a level-1, due to not having any convictions or history in the 1 year and 8 month registration as a non-rated sex offender. However, with the current concerns from the citizens; Gershowitz trying to hide the fact that he is a sex offender to the parents of children actors; and his position of authority/community trust as a producer, places Gershowitz in a pattern of behavior that increases risk for sexual re-offense, such as: inability to control impulses; repeated pattern of placing self in high risk situations and/or locations in order to gain access to individuals of similar age/circumstances as prior sex offense victim. Due to those reasons
Being known as a sex offender is horrible people look at others differently, people see the bad and want harm done to each and every one. Most of them mean well, not everyone is bad some try and better their
In extending the current sex offender and housing literature, this study explored whether the presence of RSOs were associated with a decrease in sale prices of homes in a major metropolitan U.S. county. Previous research has established that sex offender legislation has produced unintended social and financial consequences in communities located in urban areas. Economically speaking, scholars have demonstrated a relationship between home sale values and the presence of RSOs (Bian et al., 2013; Caudill et al., 2014; Larsen et al., 2003; Linden & Rockoff, 2008; Pope, 2008; Wentland et al., 2014). Based on this scholarship, home sale values have financially reacted in decreased values to the nearby presence of RSOs, even though public members
Stories of sex offenders have been increasingly a focus of attention by the criminal justice system over the past years. By legal definition, a sex offender “is a person who is convicted of a sexual offense (Sex Offender Law & Legal Definition),” an act which is prohibited by the jurisdiction. What constitutes as a sex offense or normal/abnormal sexual behavior varies over time and place, meaning that it also varies by legal jurisdiction and culture. In the United States of America, for example, a person can be convicted of wide range of sexual behavior that includes prostitution, incest, sex with a minor, rape, and other sex offenses (Sex Offender Law & Legal Definition). As the nature of sex crimes have long held the
California enacted the first sex offender register law in 1944. However, sex offender registers in the United States did not become widespread until the 1990s. The Jacob Wetterling Act 1994 was named after 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling who was abducted and to this day has never been found. The Jacob Wetterling Act implemented the first nation-wide sex offender register. Originally, the concept of a sex offender register was intended to for use solely by law enforcement; it was not an intention for the sex offender register to be public. However in 1996, Megan’s Law was added to the Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act 1994 and made it a requirement for the information on sex offender registers to be accessible by the public. Megan’s Law was enacted as a result of a heinous crime where 7-year-old Megan Kanka was raped and murdered by her neighbour, who had two previous convictions for sexually assaulting young girls. In 2006, Congress passed the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act. This Act required states to enact stricter registration requirements, including an increase in the penalty for not registering and more frequent verification of sex offenders’ locations. Since 2006 public access to sex offender registers has been accessible on the Internet in most states. On these websites you can search for an offender by name or location, and find information such as their photo, convictions, address,
In my opinion, Mary Kay Leourneau was and still is a rapist, and I would qualify her has a female sex offender. Leourneau was educated and knew right from wrong, she was an elementary school teacher and she was also a respected member of society (Mary Kay Letourneau Biography 2016). Even though her marriage had problems, in no way does this make it ok for her to become involved with a child? Vili Fualaau is a victim for life; she took this kid a 13-year-old adolescent with his hormone changes and swings. At this age boys bodies are experiencing physical changes combined with mental changes, what do boys at this age think about sex. She manipulated the situation to her liking, by having him in her home and becoming friends with her son (Mary Kay Letourneau Biography 2016). I can’t even think what kind of psychological mental abuse her children had to face. She's not sick in the sense she has a psychological problem(s) from her past or her marriage, she knew exactly what she wanted and went for it.
As background, Georgia's General Assembly passed legislation in 2003 prohibiting persons on the state's sex offender registry from
The importance of conducting a interview with a registered sex offender was to directly receive information from the source itself. One of the main purposes of this research was deciding if sex offenders have human rights and asking the sex offender their thoughts about being register and for the public to know. The anonymous sex offender spoke briefly about his time in prison to the time of his release. He states he was charge for statutory rape and was sentenced to jail until trial. He states that he was in contact with a young female who told him she was 25 years old but later found out after being arrested that she was only 16. He goes on to say that he had no idea of her age and when he was arrested, he had no idea what was going on. While
The internet has become so helpful and useful about keeping the public alerted and informed on their surrounding as well as their children’s surrounding. The internet is now the primary source for finding for finding information on any registered sex offender no matter where they might be. In the United States, failure to adequately discriminate between and among sex offenses and the overuse of the label “sex offense” has led to the polarization and over criminalization of sex crimes and has resulted in a lack of reintegration options for these alleged criminals. The term “sex offender” needs to be reserved for those individuals who best represent the meaning of the term. (Colbert, 2011, p. 1) According to US Department of Justice, a sex offender is anyone convicted of an offense of a sexual nature under the law of any jurisdiction, this also includes juveniles fourteen years of age and older. (Colbert, 2011, p. 1) In the United States, the term sex offender is too broad and can be very misleading. There is a widespread misconception among society that the meaning of sex offender is pedophile and rapist, but a sex offender can be someone that was caught urinating in public or they can be underage teenagers having consensual sex. This lack of distinction between sex offenses results in a misinformed society and this absence of information in regards to sex offenses and the presence of the sex offender registry fuels society 's ignorance and heightened prejudices towards "sex offenses." The stigma that comes with the label "sex offense” persists beyond sentencing due to the parameters of the law, making reintegration of alleged criminals into society overbearing and near impossible. These registries are public record, however they only state partial information
This article discuss assessing sex offenders but not all of the participants did a written consent. The authors did not collaborate on ethnics, which is used at all times. If a offender is locked up and does not sign a consent form stating that they understand the study and the purpose of the study than it is
There have been hundreds to thousands of treatments that have been conducted, some similar and others drastically different. In this paper, I will go over just a few of the more important types of treatments. Brown et al, (2017) demonstrates three types of treatments. Pharmacological treatment, behavioral therapy, and most importantly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). With pharmacological treatment’s their purpose is to reduce sex drive. The most common types of drugs used are antiandrogen, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and gonadotropic releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. to go into more detail antiandrogen’s like cyproterone acetate (CPA) and medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA)
The future and the safety of the kids today society is very important. Children safety is mainly important because later in life they will be the ones who will oversee how things work in society. If kids are put into the situation were they can get harmed by a sex offender this can have a domino effect on how their life can resolve. Being sexually abuse by a sex offender can be very traumatizing and take a mental toll on the child that is being abused. Sex offender are qualified as unlawful because of the level of harm that can be brought to a kid. If kids are not mental stable than how will they be able to go through everyday life as an adult. Many sex offenders became sex offender because they may have been abused by another sex offender when they were a child. Drastic measure should be taken to keep children out of harm’s way. Sex offenders should have a designated area to live in, they should work in a work environment where there are minimum to no kids, and they should have a monthly evaluation on their mental health.
