Today marks an important reminder to our lives; On the day of April 16, 2007 a mass murder read. April 16, 2007 was a very terrifying day for all staff and students of Virginia Tech University, on this particular day a 23 year old student commits a serious crime that led to a large amount of deaths. This student identity was not revealed until further notifications were taken on regards of this issue. The incident is described as a student who enters Virginia Tech campus and is known to own two semi-automatic pistols which are a glock 9 and a walther P22 killing over 32 people and injuring many.Virginia Polytechnic University is located in BlacksBurg, Virginia. For example, he was ordered to get help from a behavorial clinic. It has been reported “ To undergo out patient treatment after he was diagnosed in December 2005 as mentally ill and in need of help. (Rubin 350). Furthermore, Seung-Hui Cho mental issue led to his violent actions. Seung-Hui Cho “Admitted overnight to the hospital after his rrommate became concerned when cho threatened to take his own life.” (Seung-Hui Cho's Mental Health Records Friedman). These referneces explain how he is sick and needs therapy becuase he will need to get the support so that he doesn’t get in a large consequence that could face him killing others and himself. Ins hort, due to Seung-Hui Cho physchollogical problem, he was not conscious of the acitons he took. As a result, of this devastated massacre the effect was very tough to accept, and after all the school had to close until the event is taken care of. For example, after what had occured from the disastrous shooting in virginia tech university. The school “shut down” becuase after what had happened many students were fearful. Also, students would be scared of Seung-Hui Cho because of the camplains they made such as; “He was referred to campus police by two women who were creeped out by his messages to him.” (Gunman was bullied). This information that was set forth, said that students in virginia tech felt that the teachers weren’t affording the right safety …show more content…
For instance, Seung was bullied by two students from his english class, who took the advantage to make rude comments such as; “Mocking his shyness and the strange way he speaks.” (Gunman was bullied). Moreover, his english teacher chose him tio read aloud. He answers by “Just looking down in silence, and starts reading in an awkward way which caused the whole class to laugh at him saying “Go back to China.” (Gunman was bullied). The analysis behind these quotes is that Seung was not just bullied but also it dealt with racism comments by his own classmates. Racism is another important factor that made Seung Hui Cho feel mad and frusterated plus unwanted. Hence, the bullying that this senior faced by his classmates, made him act they way he
Last but not least, the author also makes an abundant use of appeals to the reader’s Pathos, appealing to the reader in a way that reaches them in a personal and emotional way. The author begins and ends this article with this same appeal, to draw the reader in, as well as to open them up to the information that the rest of the article provides and leave the reader thinking about it. He begins the article by mentioning some of the more infamous college campus shootings, such as those that occurred at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University, and then proceeds to make his case against concealed firearms on college campuses. This viewpoint is prominently displayed in the third section of the article, in which the author writes about how students who go on these shooting
On June 19, 1982, Vincent Chin was murdered after his bachelor party in a hate crime driven by an outrage towards the Japanese auto industry misplaced onto himself (Embracing). Neither of his murderers ever spent a day in prison, despite appeals made in court (Embracing). Vincent Chin and his case still matters to Americans and should be made aware to the Wayne State faculty and students by the Filipino Student Society (FilSoc). Not necessarily every single person needs to be told directly by the FilSoc, but at least a small portion of the faculty and student body should become aware of the Vincent Chin case through FilSoc’s efforts.
The current event Florida shooting caught my attention and eyes. On February 14, 2018 a shooting took place in Florida Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school. It was known as mass shooting seventeen students was victims in this incident and fifteen were admitted in the hospital still in critical conditions. According to the article, “Florida School Shooting: Suspect, Death Toll”, it stated Nikalas Cruz, 19 years old is responsible for the shooting. Nikalas Cruz, accept his crime and in his statement Cruz told police officer he was carrying extra guns in his backpack and he did shooting in the school hallways and school ground to target students (Segarra, L. M., 2018).
The day of the Columbine Massacre is a day that will forever burn a hole in America’s heart. The nation was shocked at the news that on April 20, 1999, high school seniors Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris went on a precisely planned shooting rampage at their school, Columbine High School. This event killed a total of thirteen individuals, including twelve students and one highly heroic teacher, and wounded many. The reportedly troubled boys had often accused others of having bullied them, which raised the question of how apparent the warning signs were of their rampage. Because this incident was one of the first known school shootings throughout the nation, many of its specific details were taken into account to help protect schools all
Sitting through an hour-long lecture or waiting in line to speak with financial aid are some examples of an average day on campus. It is during these times when students are least expecting tragedy to strike. A student may hear a loud noise and think nothing of it until they realize that noise was the sound of a shooting rampage that has reached their area and by that time it’s usually too late. Campus safety is everyone’s responsibility and remaining on alert is the only way to ensure less people are victimized. One of the first, and most memorable, attacks happened on August 1, 1966. Charles Whitman, a former marine, took rifles and other weapons to the observation deck atop the Main Building tower at The University of Texas- Austin, then randomly opened fire on the surrounding campus and streets. Over the next 96 minutes, far longer than the average active shooter attack, he shot and killed fifteen people. Included in the death toll was one unborn child, and injured thirty-one others. The incident ended when police reached Whitman and shot him dead. During this event, civilians played a vital role in assisting first responders in the take down of Whitman and Allen Crum, a 40-year-old bookstore manager and retired Air Force tail gunner, accompanied police up the tower in pursuit of Whitman. While Crum was armed, it solely because officers handed him a firearm to assist in Whitman’s take down.
On April 16, 2007 a student, Seung Hui Cho, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, went on a shooting rampage and opened fire on his fellow students and Virginia Tech community members. The shooting took place in the early hours of the morning when many students were preparing for classes. The first two shootings occurred at 7:15 am at West Ambler Johnston Hall. 21/2 hours later after Cho had changed his blood stained clothes, deleted his e-mails, removed the hard drive, mailed videos to NBC television; he again went on another shooting spree which killed 30 people. In total Cho killed 32 people and wounded 25 others before killing himself.
In 2007, the world was shocked when the deadliest shooting of a single gunman in American history took place at Virginia Tech University. The execution-style massacre left 32 students dead, and more than 20 wounded (Shapira and Jackman, 2007). The international media coverage placed harsh scrutiny on American gun laws; leaving many to question the existing firearm regulations the campus had in place (CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News Channel). At the time of the attack, the campus had a general ban on possession or storage of firearms by anyone who stepped foot on campus (employees, students, visitors, etc...). However, in the aftermath of the attack, a nationwide debate was reignited and many state legislators were forced to set aside prejudices and reexamine their current firearm laws in regards to universities and colleges (NCSL). Many argued that by doing so, individual and collective security would be enhanced. Since then, many state legislators have proposed new concealed carry laws to ease the existing ones to allow for the use of concealed
Over two hours Seung Hui Cho roamed the campus of Virginia Tech University murdering innocent students. Once again it took the shooter committing suicide for the violence to stop. The police were little help in pursuing the shooter and stopping the killings from occurring. In 2007 Cho killed 32 teachers and students making it the deadliest school shooting in the nation’s history. (Massacre at Virginia Tech leaves 32 dead) At 7:15 am Cho went into a dorm and killed a female and male student. He then went to his room sent a package and changed clothes before walking into a building full of classrooms. Armed with two handguns he locked and chained doors close and went room to room shooting and killing students. (Massacre at Virginia Tech leaves
“Shooting massacres” in school settings, a new phenomenon within the past 50 years, are extremely rare events. Over 23 years, 1990-2012, 215 fatal school shooting incidents resulted in 363 deaths, equivalent to 0.12% of national firearm homicides during that time period …… Among these, just three shooting rampages – Columbine High School, Virginia Tech University, and Sandy Hook Elementary School – accounted for 72 (53.3%) of these 135 deaths. The frequency of random/ rampage shooting incidents in schools has remained within the narrow range of 0 to 3 episodes per year.” (Shultz, et al., 2013, p. 84)
During the month of January 2013, Carlton Berry was accused of opening fire at Lone Star College. He was accused of shooting two people before wounding himself in the leg. Even though it came to be known in the course of the investigation that it was really not Carlton Berry who was involved, but Trey Foster, the question arises as to whether guns should be allowed in colleges. This lone incidence that happened at Lone Star Community College reflects the April 16th, the year 2007 where there was a shooting on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute along with State University. In this incidence, a student by the name Seung-hui opened fire on unsuspecting scholars killing approximately 32 people and wounding many others before he
On April 16, 2007, one of the most tragic incidents in the United States occurred on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. Seung- Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech ruthlessly murdered 32 people and wounded 17 others through the usage of firearms in two separate attacks. This incident is considered the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in the history of America. While people still mourn and pray for the victims, this shooting also led to many controversies. Till this day, Cho’s access to firearm and Virginia Tech’s security hazard remains to be controversial. The motive and cause of Cho’s action and what the school could have done in order to prevent this tragic incident will be addressed.
"I'm angry someone would do this to us. There are lives ruined, families ruined, and our whole school year is ruined" (Brackely 1). Casey Brackely, once a student that attended Columbine High School, remembers the tragedy of the horrific Columbine shooting that killed and injured many students. Mass shootings in the United States have been on the rise since the 1980’s, especially in the last decade. These shooters motives and profiles are almost all terrifyingly alike. Many of these shooters try to imitate and parallel the tragic shooting of the Columbine High School in 1999. These shootings have made peaceful organizations, such as an elementary school; become a place of violence and death. Currently, in the United States, an epidemic of
On an unseasonably cold March morning in 1993, high school sophomore Edward Gillom exited his first period classroom and made his way through the crowded hallways of Harlem High School. After engaging in a heated argument, allegedly over a girl, with Ronricas “Pony” Gibson and Ricoh Lee, Gillom pulled out a .38-caliber gun and opened fire. Gillom’s shots fatally wounded Gibson and left Lee with a non-fatal gunshot wound to the neck (Washington Ceasefire, 2011 pg 1). The shooting in Harlem, Georgia sparked national attention as one of the first high school shootings and added to the alarmingly high rates of gun violence by adolescents during the 1990s. According to the Virginia Youth Violence Project, forty-two homicides took place in
One of the most deadly shooting rampage in U.S history (CNN USA) Twenty- three-year old Virginia tech gunman named Seung Hui Cho had been relentlessly teased and bullied throughout middle school and high school. Seung Hui Cho was extremely angry with his classmates and went on a rampage. He felt more rage against his classmates who were wealthier and when the shooting occurred he went against the rich. Cho makes a statement saying the reason he shot and killed was due to the fact he thought they were “brats” and “snobs.” The real reason Seung Hui Cho went on a rampage is due to his own insecurities about his upbringing and feeling shame about his parents who ran a dry-cleaning business, and felt that the reason he was being bullied at school was because he came from a lower socioeconomic family. “Seung Hui Cho also felt his race played a large role in his bullying, many racial comments were projected towards Seung Hui Cho, till it pushed him towards a rampage”
The tragic events at Virginia Tech in April of 2007 and Northern Illinois University in February of 2008 have policymakers, campus officials and citizens looking for solutions to prevent future attacks (Dickerson). Violent shootings that have occurred on a few college campuses in recent years have provoked a debate over
