In “Serve or Fail,” Dave Eggers argues that a community service requirement should be set in place for college university students to graduate, thus creating “well-rounded scholars.” According to Eggers, university college students have “many hours in the days and weeks that need killing.” Students having extra time on their hands could easily volunteer for community service, positively impacting their respective communities, as well as gaining knowledge and experience of working with others in a professional setting. Eggers states that there are already some colleges and high schools with community service requirements in order to graduate. While this requirement could be a strain on the younger levels of education, Eggers believes a requirement set for university college students could work because they generally are not “boxed-in by family and after school obligations,” as well as being able to handle the extra task. …show more content…
Community service ultimately provides preparation for work, and allows for one to make connections and networks from within. One can gain knowledge and experience in a variety of fields, and would help them discover what they truly wish to do in college, as many people do not know what to do halfway through their college careers. My own volunteer work specifically, has directed me to a path of interest I had never before considered. Having participated in various volunteer and community service events, I discovered working within the performing arts is of great interest to me, and I would have never considered this field if it were not for community service. It is clear that community service needs volunteers, equally as much as volunteers need the benefits of community service. The millions of organizations frantically recruiting volunteers for events everyday would be grateful for any amount of service given, even so with only an hour’s
When applying for a position at a job, managers always check to see how much experience you have in order to check if you are qualified. When filling out a college application there are always questions that ask to write down any extra curricular activities you participated in or any clubs/service work you did and for how long. It is important to be a part of the community and to be dedicated to one or two locations for a certain amount of time to show commitment and effort. A student that has been a part of an organization for about three months and has not missed will be prefered at a college than a student that goes five times a month. Community service does not only help build relationships but allows students to spend their time learning new skills and it will benefit them in the future. Community service for high school seniors should be mandatory because it will teach the students how to be responsible, allow them to explore in depth something related to their career and improve their communication skills.
Furthermore, the author acknowledges that the service requirement won’t be fit everywhere. He says It wouldn’t be practical for community college students who generally have considerable family and work demands. Egger’s says although you would exempt community college students there would still be millions of able-bodied young people. He suggests that modest hours can make a huge impact. He gives an example of the flexibility colleges could have with students so they don’t feel so burdened, he proposes the college gives them credit for their service. Furthermore, the author creates another way a college can make it possible on a student. Dave Egger’s implies that colleges could limit their service requirement to their junior year, when a student
Community service is an act of selflessness that grows a caring community. Community only consists on what it’s members are willing to contribute to it. Personally, it is my pristine pride to assist the community in it’s development it into a bountiful place for all.
Is graduating a goal for you? To be the first one to graduate in your family? It’s like as if you’re almost there, just one more step but you need one more requirement to be eligible. In this article “Pro/Con: Should Student Service Learning Hours Be Mandatory?” By Claire Koeing, it states the opinion of why high school students should and shouldn’t do community service as a requirement to graduate high school. Many have their own opinion of why it is and isn’t important to have community service as a requirement. High school students mainly seniors already have so much stress and to do, but this does prepare them and give them a taste of how it will be after graduation.
Service in the school and community is an insight to your character and work ethic. I have over 20 hours of community service from many different experiences. Last summer I worked for Camp Barakel, a summer camp, in the kitchen. I assisted in serving food and cleaning. I learned discipline and teamwork through this valuable experience. Not only this I’ve worked with the Elderly in Rehabilitation centers and the patience and nurturing qualities is something that will forever be valuable in my life. Last but not least working as Big Sister or Buddy to a 4th grade girl has given me the chance to positively impact and influence her life as simply as having a friend is immense. All of these service opportunities as added to my character and prepared me for the responsibilities of
Winston Churchill’s quote "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give" embodies what community service is really about. Over the years I have had the pleasure of working for several organization and volunteering in a variety of different areas. There has been a community service experience that changed my life tremendously though. From 2009 until 2014 I had the amazing opportunity to work for the Nash-Edgecombe County Teen Court Program and doing so profoundly shaped my future.
In "Serve or Fail," Dave Eggers argues that college should consider instituting a service requirement for graduation. Eggers gives us some purpose of college education to link with volunteering that help students getting beneficial effects. He gave some good points in terms of helping others out. He explains that college is too short to sit back and become the best foosball player and waste your time with no commitments to any after school obligations, etc. I think that everyone should be able to give some of their time to volunteer and put a smile on someone's face because they think that you care. I find Dave Eggers writing “Serve or Fail” very persuasive for the following reasons.
Service can take on a variety of definitions. Too often, a societal view of service is somehow linked with laborious work at an inconvenient time of the day or somewhat of a burden; that is the stigma associated with service from my home community at least. Throughout my semester volunteering at the People’s Bank Theatre, I have really come to enjoy the service I have partaken in. With my own personal promotion of culture, especially coming to a region of the country which would not typically be predisposed to the arts at such high caliber performance, I definitely felt a real sort of connection to the theatre which in turn made my volunteering experience meaningful.
I have learned that community service would take the focus off of me and make me more aware of the world and people around me. Today it seems that everybody is so wrapped up in themselves and material items that they lose sight of the things in life that truly make you happy. Just the good feelings you get when you're able to help somebody out are more rewarding than a paycheck. I also feel it would help me develop better leadership skills by planning and organizing fundraising, food drives, etc. It's difficult for many people to work as a team and work out their ideas. It's important to know when to step up and take charge, and when it's time to sit back and listen to others ideas. I feel that the sooner you can learn to work with others, the better off you are. Last but not least, I believe that community service prior to graduation will give me a better idea of what to expect once I have graduated. A lot of people enter the workforce with no prior knowledge or experience. By having that knowledge and experience I feel that I would have an edge over other graduates from different schools. All in all I know that I can and will make a difference in people's lives everyday. I hope you consider taking on a few hours of community service. I feel that this will make you an asset as well as a person to your
Although community service is a great way to give back to the community, it has been tainted by its use as a requirement for high school graduates. Forcing volunteer work should be recognized for more than just a bare minimum, is unfair to those who have other obligations and provides no lasting benefit to the students. Many people and schools believe that making community service not optional for receiving a diploma could only benefit the students it’s required of but in a way it’s more harmful than helpful.
A continuous debate that is currently receiving much attention is whether community service should be a mandatory graduation requirement. Preparing students to effectively function in the real world is an important aspect of our education system. Today more than ever, there is an emphasis on having experience before beginning work. Most jobs are now focused on looking past your resume to see what you have given back to the community. Nevertheless, it is important that schools focus on preparing college students for the work force by mandating that they receive all of the necessary exposure and experience. Numerous schools across the country have mandated that in order for their students to graduate, they must complete a predetermined amount of community service. In Maryland, high school students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours of service in order to graduate. However, this decision has resulted in a lot of mixed responses. Advocates of this decision stress that mandatory community service opens doors for students, while the opponents feel that it takes away valuable time from students who need to focus on their education. I believe that gaining experience outside of school is critical for future success in life. To ensure that students are prepared to transition smoothly from school to work, they need to be involved with the community while in school in order to build the leadership skills that are necessary to succeed.
“Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like or have time for.” Community service is really easy to get into. I mean, it is not like you have to put out an application and have an interview in order to do it. It is really easy to get into, and is really fun. It is things you wouldn’t even think are considered, like:
Community service has impacted both me and my life because I now see that it's okay to give back to your community. Even if people in your community aren't giving back to you or being grateful for what you're doing for them, it's fine. It's fine because what you're doing is making you a better person and I realized that. With my personal interests such as dance, being the track manager, and etc, It’s helped me understand that i can’t just sit around in the house and be lazy.
Community service is services volunteered by individuals or an organization to benefit a community or its institutions. My favorite community service job that I completed was located at The Junior Achievement at the Atlanta Discovery Center. The objective of this service was to teach children how to survive and succeed in the world economically through the use of time, talent, cooperation, and education. Before they came to the center students were trained by their teachers to budget money and to spend it wisely. So when they finally arrived, a real life model was presented to them. With the compelling volunteer and student interaction, we helped each student understand the theory to life and also understand the differences between needs and wants. The building was set up with different mini department stores like Chick-fil-A, Publix, philanthropy shop, SunTrust bank, home/apartment agencies, automobile shop, Belk, Kaiser Permanente, and AT&T. These shops were to help the students understand manage the differences between what they really need and what they really want. In addition, the goal was to also help build character and skills to make it in the fast-moving real world.
Community service provides us an opportunity to apply our learning to real people and situations, and to relate to different diversities across others within our community. Giving your time towards community service can develop the society and backgrounds while acquiring life lessons. It will also help people to further impact the world in the future. By participating in Community Service, it will help expose individuals on what a difference they will be making for our society. Individuals will acknowledge a greater appreciation of specific roles in the community, and also offering assistants to those in need. It is also important because it makes you become a better person by breaking down stereotypes and appreciating other cultures.
