Self Trust Issues In 'The Landlady'

Decent Essays

In the short story, “The Landlady” Billy deals with self trust issues. He visits a bed and breakfast place and makes plans to stay. In the beginning he just walks into the store after he stops thinking if it’s a good idea and doesn’t trust himself. Later, he reads the names of previous people who stayed there and questions if they’re are familiar. He thinks he recognised them from the newspaper, because they went missing, but the landlady says it’s not them. At first he sees the place, and does not listen to his gut that tells him to avoid it. Dahl writes, “The place seemed to draw me in. . .It had a odd feeling about it.”This is significant because he doesn’t go with his gut. Billy knows there is something weird but does not trust himself
