Self-Care: Dealing with Stress Nursing school requires an immense amount of dedication and motivation. In order to function at an optimal level, it is necessary to identify problem areas then be able to intervene and change them in a positive manner. In seminar, I used the Lifestyle and Health Habits Self Assessment and determined that I suffer from a high level of stress. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the methods and interventions I used to improve this problem, as well as explore the nursing process and how to apply it to a situation. Subjective Data I always experience stress concerning schoolwork. I have symptoms such as irritability, headaches, crying, and short temper. These symptoms are worse during the months of August through the first week of May. These feelings are especially intensified when I am studying for tests, writing papers or working on projects. To help relieve these factors I exercise, try to go to bed around 10:30, eat a healthy diet, and spend time with my friends and family when my schedule allows. Towards the end of May, I notice an immediate improvement in all symptoms. Through the months of late May through mid-August, I experience feelings of relaxation, calmness, and an overall sense of improved happiness. Objective Data When I assessed my level of stress, I used the Stress Test from stress.org. My results were between 22 and 55, which, according to this test, falls in the Danger Zone. Due to lack of sleep, my appearance is
As a former Army Soldier, I know that life is full of stress and stressors that can have an impact on my life. In fact, I believe as a Soldier, you can have an additional form of stress known as combat stress that can produce long term effects to your health and well-being. I retired from the Army in 2009 after deploying six times to various combat zones and dealt with other stressors that you have in the Army. I believe that I have some effects from the stress that I endured while in a combat zone. Finding ways to deal with stress without going and asking for help through meditation and relaxation exercises would be beneficial to me, so that I don’t have to turn to someone for help. Besides combat stress or related stress, I also have the stress that everyone in life endures. My top stressors are that of work in my current job, family life to include extended family, finances, continuing my education, and lastly combat stress from when I was on active duty. According to the Mayo Clinic in an article from mayoclinic.org titled Healthy Life Styles Stress Management, “Stress might be affecting your health without you even realizing it.” In this paper I will answer the questions like, what causes this stress. Is it time management? I believe what causes a lot of this stress is not having enough time in the day to do it all the things you want or need to do without causing a negative feelings or anger. In this, I
Before I became a registered nurse, I never really thought it would be this stressful and hard of work. Now as a 4 week brand new nurse to the medical surgical floor, I am exhausted by the end of my day shift. I was amazed after reading Maureen Iacono’s Nurses’ Self Care: A Question of Balance article regarding how nurse’s health is affected physically, personally, and mentally due to the lack of neglected self-care. As a result of insufficient self-care and the consequences of fatigue and mental tiredness of poor judgment can lead to dangerous patient bedside outcomes. Iacono explains how it is imperative to take certain measures of self-care such as eating healthier, take a vacation, prioritize sleep, and exercising in order to improve nurses’
The intervention in this health promotion topic (stress) is training patients and affected people on the importance of positively managing stress. The nurse can implement this intervention into everyday practice by equipping the affected individuals with the different strategies of managing stress so as to deter its aggressive impacts. An example of the health promotion in stress is advising the affected people to get involved in physical activities that keep their minds busy to limit too much thinking (Benner & Wrubel,
I really enjoyed that you acknowledged stress management. When i was writing my post I was focused on the academic portion and didn’t think how is would effect me otherwise. Do you have a particular way you schedule your school work? I am still trying to figure out when the best time is.
Students today spend the majority of their weekdays at schools which can result in stress due to many factors. It is important for students to learn to cope with pressure because it is an important skill for overall health. Grades can cause stress and anxiety in many ways. For example, a student that is receiving “bad” grades can have stress because they feel pressured by the teachers or parents to get better grades, and the student may feel that their peers are judging them because of their grades. On the other hand, a student who is receiving “good” grades may feel stress due to the pressure of maintaining their grades for the sake of their peer’s judgement and parent’s expectations. Sources of stress in schools include: Teacher Interactions, Academic Stress, Peer Interactions, and Academic Self-Concept (Helms and Gable 6). The manifestation of stress results in emotional, behavioral, or psychological distress (Helms and Gable 6). Grades are a factor in all of the sources mentioned, the student may feel the teacher disapproves of them, their peers don’t respect them, and their self-esteem will be impacted because of poor grades. This can result in behaviour and emotional issues which further the student’s insecurities and can cause psychological problems in the long term. Letter or percentage grades say nothing about these issues, it is very difficult to spot stress in children and the resulting behaviour due to stress can be misinterpreted if the parents and teachers are not made aware. Summary assessments can help detect stress in students, where the student can explain how they are feeling and the teachers and parents can detect high levels of stress. Test anxiety is another manifestation of stress in students today; unfortunately, many schools and teachers face a huge responsibility in which the students must perform well in order for teachers to keep their jobs and for schools to
Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that affects one to two percent of people worldwide. The disorder can develop as early as the age of five, though it is very rare at such an early age. (3)) Most men become ill between the ages of 16 and 25 whereas most women become ill between the ages of 25 and 30. Even though there are differences in the age of development between the sexes, men and women are equally at risk for schizophrenia. (4) There is of yet no definitive answer as to what causes the disorder. It is believed to be a combination of factors including genetic make-up, pre-natal viruses, and early brain damage which cause neurotransmitter problems in the brain. (3)
A health behavior issue that needs to be addressed is developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. According to "The American Institute Of Stress" (n.d.), stress has different effects on everyone, but it is how we respond to it that makes all the difference. Nowadays people are effected by stress which has been known to cause a wide range of health and medical problems. The "World Health Organization" (2015) identifies health and wellness as
Nursing revolves, not merely about looking after patients, but creating awareness in the society about self care nursing and prevention strategies and to communicate with their patients in a holistic manner, so as to satisfy their physical, mental and spiritual health needs. Various nursing theorists have repeatedly
Throughout life stress is a common problem whether it’s at work, school or home. The many negative effects of stress in fact affect individuals differently varying from health issues to work performance. Therefore, all individuals have different views of stress and various ways of handling it or otherwise managing their stress. Stress is when any living thing feels endangered and its homeostasis is at risk (Varvogli & Darviri, 2011, p. 74). Ways of dealing with stress are efforts of cognitive, behavioral, and psychological nature that allows a person to manage stress. Although there are different causes of stress, there are also many techniques for relieving it. The following articles are intended for the reader to
The population target that this study is focusing on is nurses, either registered nurses (RNs) or license vocational nurses (LVNs). The primary problem that the researchers are focusing on is the relation between the levels of stress a nurse has on the job to the risk of the developing or having eating disorder. In the background information, they report that in other profession in which stress is high, eating disorders are reported more often (King, Vidourek, & Schwiebert, 2009). They suggest that nursing is a high-level stress job that could possibly place nurses at risk (King et al.). They justify the need and importance of study for nurses as it implicates a possible need for interventions from the management arena of nursing and possibly personal intervention as well (King et al.). The problems is researchable as it is makes use of surveys in order to create a set of statistical data. The researchers of this study do not formally imply that they utilized a conceptual framework, even more so, one can assume that they make use of the Roy's Adaptation Model, in which correlates a persons ability to cope with their environmental situation (Polit & Beck, 2006).
The article that I have selected is a study investigating the health practices and the lifestyle of registered nursing in today’s work force. Registered nurses live a very stressful life and their own personal health and well being may be sacrificed.
Most depressants effect the brain just by increasing the moments of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a biological in the brain that sends messages between every cell. The activity increased GABA to slow down the brain activity. This is a relaxing effect that can be very helpful to people with anxiety problems. Although there’s also a negative side effects to this too much GABA activity, though, can be harmful. These effects can lead to serious accidents or injuries. These types of depressants can also lead you to physical dependence this is another reason why they should only be used as prescribed. Dependence is a feeling that makes you feel uncomfortable or sick when you try to stop taking the drug, and it can only lead
There are many challenges that we face and have to handle every single day. And, as women, we frequently have to balance the demands of work, family, children, parents, finances, and health—to name just a few. These demands are frequently referred to as “stressors” and achieving a balance is “stressful.” But multiple demands on our time and energy are a part of everyone’s life. Stress is not how many demands you have in your life, but rather how you and your body respond to these demands. For some, racing to meet a tight deadline or complete a long “ToDo” list can be positive and energizing. It’s important to learn what stress is, at what point it becomes harmful, and options for how you can respond to it. Finding the right balance is
Developmental Need: I have been experiencing a growing number of time stressors throughout my last three semesters. I have been working part-time at a credit union while attending full-time studies. This led to a mix of anticipatory stressors moving towards exam season. I frequently experience physical symptoms of stress such as headaches, nausea and chest pain. The root cause of my stress is my work overload. The responsibilities of working 30+ hours while ensuring adequate time for my studies have become challenging. More specifically, I experience the most stress when studying for online courses which have a lack of direction for what will be exam material. This has created a loss of control and a major stressor in my academic life.
One negative effect that stress inflicts on nursing students is that elevated levels of stress lead to serious health problems. Stress is proven to be a cause of many difficulties among humans and that extreme amounts can lead to complications later on in life or even an early death. Nursing students are placed under continuous extreme levels of stress throughout the duration of their education. Prolonged periods of stress have been proven to cause serious problems relating to the whole body not
