The Scarlet Sin
Nathaniel Hawthorne was the great nephew of the infamous judge of the Salem witch trials John Hathorn. Also an anti transcendentalist Nathaniel was obsessed with John Hathorne. Nathaniel wrote many great books such as The Blithedale Romance and The Scarlet letter. The Scarlet Letter is a story set in colonial 1600’s about a woman named Hester Prynne who has committed Adultery with a minister of the name Dimmesdale. With their only reminder of guilt a child Pearl. In his novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the symbolism of The Scarlet Letter, Pearl, and Dimmesdale to contribute to the theme of Secret sin.
To begin, The Scarlet Letter
The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, is the nephew of John Hathorne. During the Salem Witch Trials, the only judge that did not apologize for the remorseless and cruel acts that were put upon many men and women was in fact John Hathorne. Nathaniel changed his last name from Hathorne to Hawthorne in an attempt to disassociate himself from his uncle. John Hathorne is the reason why Nathaniel Hawthorne is obsessed with the puritan times. Hawthorne lived in the 1800s, but the setting of the novel is based before the Salem Witch Trials were held in the 1600s. In his novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the symbolism of the scarlet letter, Dimmesdale, and burrs to contribute to the overall theme of guilt.
In The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author is trying to convey to the reader his definition of sin through the many symbols in the novel. Three of the symbols that Hawthorne used would be Pearl, black weeds, and Chillingworth. Hawthorne's definition of sin is what seems wrong is wrong, this is proved through Pearl, the black weeds, and Chillingworth which are some of many symbols of Hawthorne's throughout The Scarlet Letter. “How strange, indeed! Man had marked this woman’s sin by a scarlet letter, which had such potent and disastrous efficacy that no human sympathy could reach her, save it were sinful like herself.
There are many characters in The Scarlet Letter. Each of these characters sins in various ways, but the one that commits the greatest sin is Chillingworth. Chillingworth, instead of forgiving Dimmesdale, decides, with vile hate in his heart the whole time, to torment him. This tormenting lasts several years and reduces Dimmesdale to a feeble state in mind and body.
Secrets were the currency of choice for many transactions in the past and today. Ranging from gossip to government scandals, the secret was often the driving force of what makes the scandal so interesting. Often times, this leads to a loss of power, literal or figurative. President Nixon had retired after the Watergate Scandal, which had ruined his reputation and cost him his job. However, secret’s can also lead to empowerment, such as the unknown capacities of the Soviet Union and the United States preventing brash action. In The Scarlet Letter, Robert Chillingworth, Hester Prynne and Pearl Prynne each held a powerful secret. The secrets they possessed empowered themselves with the knowledge that only they had. Chillingworth used his knowledge of Dimmesdale’s secrets to help

Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist. But is also the great nephew of judge John Hathorne who became obsessed with the 1600’s and Puritan Societies. This obsession makes Nathaniel writes about times in the 1600’s in Puritan Societies. In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the Scaffold, the character Dimmesdale, and Burrs to contribute to the overall theme of guilt.
1. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, the Scarlet Letter, it shows how one sinful act can impact someone's life in several different ways. Although one may think a sinful act would only lead to only punishment, it doesn't always happen that way. In this case, the crime that is committed was adultery, which almost gives away what it lead to. Hester Prynne's evil act had lead to the birth of a little girl, who was loved infinitely by her mother even though they were both shot down by society.
The main characters in the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, experience personality changes because of the sins they commit. Chillingworth, Hester, and Dimmesdale all commit sins that change their character for better or worse. The consequences of the sins affects them mentally emotionally and physically.
In Hawthorne's’, The Scarlet Letter, the main topic is sin. Every character in the novel commits a form of sin. However, the results and effects are different for each character. As William Shakespeare once said, “Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall.” Hawthorne shows the meaning of this quote through each character's reaction towards sin.
The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in the early 1800s, was a novel that used symbolism to create a picture of a fictional story in the Puritan town of Boston in the 1600s. During this time period, Boston was a theocracy, meaning that its government was ruled by religion. The Puritan people lived their lives in total service to God and even went as far as living without any earthly pleasure in the hope that they would be rewarded in heaven. They thought that if they lived their lives without giving themselves to God, they would be sent to hell. N. Hawthorne had almost an obsession with Puritanism, and that was because his uncle, John Hathorne participated as a judge in the Salem Witch trials, and was the only one who never apologized
What do you get when you take two people, sin, and fear of repentance? The answer is a huge mess and many years of despair. A very heavy book by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the Scarlet Letter has a lot to say. Set in the colony of Massachusetts, the Scarlet Letter is about passion, sin, and the consequences of not taking responsibility. Hester Prynne and a young minister Arthur Dimmesdale commit adultery, which leads to the birth of an illegitimate child, Pearl.
The Battle Against Sin In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, a main focus of the novel is sin and how the capability of a character to deal with their sin effects the way they are able to live. For example, Arthur Dimmesdale a Reverend in the novel, experiences guilt from the inability to come to terms with his sin results in his internal destruction. While, on the other hand Hester Prynne the admitted town adulterer, accepts her sin and is able to find herself even with the constant burden she has placed on her bosom, in the shape of a scarlet gold embroidered "A." The manner with how sin is dealt with either causes the characters demise, or sense of redemption throughout the novel. Hester’s sin of adultery causes her to no longer
A person can not truly hide sin. It will be revealed and they will have to deal with it. If they do not confess, it will overcome them. It will also affect others. Many people attempt to hide their sins, so that others will not view them differently. However, sin will inevitably come to light.
One of the main themes in The Scarlet Letter is that of the secret. The plot of the book is centered on Hester Prynne’s secret sin of adultery. Nathaniel Hawthorne draws striking parallelism between secrets held and the physical and mental states of those who hold them. The Scarlet Letter demonstrates that a secret or feeling kept within slowly engulfs and destroys the soul such as Dimmesdale’s sin of hypocrisy and Chillingworth’s sin of vengeance, while a secret made public, such as Prynne’s adultery, can allow a soul to recover and even strengthen.
Since the beginning of time we have shown our imperfections as human beings. As detailed by the Bible in the Book of Genesis, Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge committing the original sin. This infraction against God resulted in Adam and Eves expulsion from the Garden of Eden, and set the foundation for the judgment of mankind. The word sin derives from Old English synn and is defined as something shameful, deplorable, or utterly wrong. In this essay I will be comparing exposed sin to hidden sin as related to The Scarlet Letter, and the effects it has on people.
