Scott Mescudi is a hip-hop artist whose music captures the mind of his listeners through his depressed melodic harmonies. As a child he suffered a traumatic incident that led him to become what he is today for better or for worse. His father died when he was eleven years old inspiring him musically and as a person. With Scott’s father dieing he became depressed (Jaliman). He struggled through life dealing with his depression as a kid through when he is an adult. The only way for him to feel an escape from his sadness and lonesomeness was through his artistic ability in creating music. Through that Scott expresses his passions and demons. On his album “Man on the Moon” and other popular works such as his single “The Prayer”, Kid Cudi speaks …show more content…
He later was expelled for threatening to punch his principle at Solon but does go on to earn his GED. Him threatening his principal is an inappropriate action and could have been influenced by his older brother Dean who was not the best influence. He mother loved Scott and knew knew he was talented in the area of art so she enrolled him in Toledo college where he studied film for a year but dropped out. He moved to New York where he stayed with his uncle Kalil Madi. Scott took the name Kid Cudi and began making mixtapes and making real music when he creates his first hit single “Day ‘N’ Night” “Day ‘N’ Night” was created after his uncle passed away and holds a lot of meaning because before Kalil passed away he kicked Scott out of his house despite Scott not having and other living arrangements. Scott was bitter for that but never apologized for his bitterness which he regrets once Kalil dies. Khalil 's death inspired Scott (Kid Cudi) to write “Day ‘N’ Night”.
The song begins with the first verse:
“Day and night (what, what)
I toss and turn, I keep stressing my mind, mind (what, what)
I look for peace but see I don 't attain (what, what)
What I need for keeps this silly game we play, play
Now look at this (what, what)
Madness to magnet keeps attracting me, me (what, what)
I try to run but see I 'm not that fast (what, what)
I think I 'm first but surely finish last, last”
This song begins with stating the song “Day ‘N’
Music has always been regarded as an art of high importance. The word itself originates from the Greek word mousike meaning “of the muses”, the group of nine Greek Goddesses who regulate the arts and sciences. It has often been used as a way to heal mental and emotional pain; “music speaks directly to the body through intuitive channels that are accessed at entirely different levels of consciousness from those associated with cognition” (The Music Effect.24). In Jan Johnson’s Soul Wound, Johnson discusses the historical trauma of Native Americans and the rage that is associated with it. This rage, as she later states, “is generally turned inward and expressed through depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide, and manifested externally within families and communities through domestic and other forms of violence” (Johnson.226-227). In Wabanaki Blues by Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel we see this rage internalized and portrayed in the depression of both Mona and her mother and depicted in their family dynamic through the neglect of Mona’s mother towards Mona. Mona, as well as other characters in the book, utilize music as a form of therapy to heal the soul. The characters in Wabanaki Blues utilize music to heal in ways that parallels Bob Marley’s Redemption Song and the Rastafarian religion.
In the book ¨Night¨ by Elie Wiesel probably choose the word night because of the meaning behind the word and how the book is portrayed. For example, the book was dark, sad and lonely. Many Jews had a dream to get out of the concentration camp and be able to move on with their life it was just a total nightmare for them. And consequently the Meaning of the word is just like that night means it dark and people dream about positive stuff happening to them but when they wake up it's the complete opposite they have to deal with life and it's a nightmare because life is hard just like life
This view makes it known that he can use music as a way of escaping from reality. This scene reminds me of one from “Travis Scott: Look Mom I Can Fly” during his first concert in what looks like a parking lot with only 50 people, but he still acts like it's sold out and in a stadium. In contrast, “Travis Scott: Look Mom I Can Fly” highlights the highs and lows of the famous rapper. The documentary gives great detail into Travis Scott’s creative process as an artist, his rags to riches story, and the challenges he has had to overcome to get to where he is now. One scene that I think shows how far his self expression has gotten him is his performance at the Astroworld Festival, where he shows his emotion through self-written songs as he performs.
In the memoir A Long Way Gone, author Ishmael Beah describes his survival journey as a lost child in his country, because of the civil war in Sierra Leone, then becoming a child soldier facing war daily, afterward the process that Beah went through during rehabilitation and finally in fear escaping the civil war. Ishmael Beah emotional journey has three stages of development in which Beah utilized music. In the first stage, Beah uses music as a survival mechanism to keep sane and safe. In the second stage, begins when he loses his brother and friends, Beah reaches the lowest point with the loss of his entire family again, some friends, music, and being forced to join the war. In the final stage, is the process of rehabilitation where Beah connects with music once again. Ishmael Beah exposure to music at a young age stayed with him throughout his life. (Beah, 2007, p. 5-218)
“Night” by Elie Wiesel was written so that nobody could ever forget the hardships the Jews went through during The Holocaust. Adolf Hitler had the motivation to liquidate every Jew without knowing what happened in the concentration camps. Although the title sounds peaceful, it has a double meaning: figurative and literal.
In the beginning, Elie Wiesel’s purpose for writing Night was to show that there is still a memory for what happened during the holocaust. He stated that, “ Violence is not the answer, terrorism is the most something must be done.” He was explaining that if you ever did anything bad you would get badly punished when it shouldn’t have happened in the first place. It showed how people were rude and disrespectful to kids and young adults. Another one was, “ the children and their fear. The uprooted their hope”. It’s explaining that they would get their
Alternative artist and songwriter,Rivers Cuomo of the band Weezer, in his song “California Kids” claims that by letting go of all of people’s high standards and just living a worry free life, then people’s problems will come to an end. He develops his argument by first drawing illustrations between a life that is stressful and one that is more relaxed, then he uses juxtaposition to emphasize the California lifestyle, and finally, he uses pathos to appeal to people on an emotional level. Cuomo’s purpose is to convince his audience to join him in shedding the persona and responsibilities of adulthood so that they may be “California Kids.” Throughout his song he creates a reassuring and uplifting tone for his audience, which are made up of people
Elie Wiesel titled his book “Night” because it was a dark time in all the Jews lives; the title mirrors the painful feelings of others around him. The Jews were all going through the hardest times of their lives. Fighting for survival and trying to cope with their “new” lives. Elie Wiesel also uses the word night throughout the book numerous times. The word night is used to represent darkness, sadness, and depression.
When it comes to influential people who have shaped the music industry and society itself, not many artists come to mind when thinking of this particular subject. This can be debated on many platforms, but one can argue that Kid Cudi has been an exception, he has exceeded expectation and obstacles throughout his life. From working with the biggest artists all over world, to becoming the unofficial spokesperson for the youth and suicide awareness. Kid Cudi has done it all, but the journey to the top wasn’t always smooth sailing. The events that have occurred in the life of Kid Cudi have played a major role in the creation of his music.
The controversial context that is often used in Hip-Hop sets the standard of what it means to be ‘masculine’ as an artist of the culture. Artist who does not display contentious lyrical content in their music may not receive as much notoriety in the industry. In today’s Hip-Hop culture, more ‘conscious’, ‘apathetically masculine’ artist like, J. Cole have become more in popular. Cole’s lyrics are a reflection of his adversities that he has endured during his lifetime. Cole’s inspirations behind his music does not stem from a place of violence or from his ability to accumulate wealth, but from his ability to overcome his hardships as a black man and fulfill his purpose in life.
For as long as mankind has walked on this earth, music has been an important part of our culture and lifestyles. Each walk of life beats to a different drum. Different cultures use music for many aspects of their lives; for religious purposes, for celebrations, for comfort, for sorrow, for relaxation, for sports, for dances, for energy, for learning, for sleeping, and for sexual experiences. Everyone uses music for something. Music connects with people and reaches them in ways that words simply cannot. Music is a representation of what feelings sound like. It expresses emotion and brings that characteristic out from within us; it tells us a story. Every generation has its’ own sound and different music styles have emerged and become
When we are born into this World, some say we are born with no predefined path, others will say one 's Destiny is already chosen. It is one of the many wonders of the Human experience to try and seek purpose and meaning in life, to be freed of the constraints society puts upon others. Many people living today do not know what path they are taking, they are walking blindly, in the dark. However, it is possible for one to open their eyes and to see the many opportunities that come their way and to see the light in this complicated world of ours. One of the many people in this world who have experienced this enlightenment is John Coltrane. What makes this man special is that he like many others started out life with no path he only lived in the moment not thinking about how he can leave his mark on the world. However unlike the majority of the population Coltrane midway through his life realised he needed to make a change in the world and that the way he would do it would be through his music. Coltrane’s success came to be due to his determination to fulfill his dream of making the world a better place, while overcoming the various barriers society and the world he was born into put in front of him; this determination led to his success. However like all barriers, some simply can not be overcome, and failure will play a crucial role in Coltrane’s career. Although through failure, one can learn to better themselves and achieve complete greatness, this is exactly what Coltrane
Kanye West produced the popular song “All Falls Down” in 2004. He is well known for creating many wonderful tunes but this one stands out above the rest. While his other songs contain bass-heavy instrumentals and contain lyrics about money and women, this one is strays away from the previous structures. “All Falls Down” catches the attention of youth, with its mellow melody, to send a strong message concerning the overemphasis on money and education and how it can be harmful through the lyrics. The issues contained in the message are highly focused on the idea that money and education will not always be there
Do you ever wonder what is the meaning behind what you so proudly sing whenever you hear it? Music is an art form of culture which organizes sound with times It first came around in prehistoric times, however, as times passes, music is drastically changing. As a result, in the last decades music has experienced drastic changes in the themes they are talking about. These changes are due to the generations and what they are living, political and social actions of the time. For example, the decade of the 80s was the rise of hip-hop and rap music from a local phenomenon to a worldwide known genre of music. Previously, a crack cocaine epidemic had stroke major cities in the USA and it coincided with the rise of hip-hop in black communities as these
Kendrick Lamar took the music industry by storm last year after his release of his sophomore album To Pimp A Butterfly. Immediately, the album quickly became critically acclaimed and resulted in multiple awards such as winning four grammys this past winter. The album goes deep into Kendrick’s personal struggles as new found celebrity, while also touching on subjects surrounding the black community. For this paper I took a look at the standout song off the album Institutionalized, that deals with the internal struggle people go through in life because of the barriers of thinking they are imprisoned to in their lives. Along with this, the song also has elements that tie
