There is no such thing as perfect, whether it is doing something in a perfect way, or even just living in a “perfect” ideal society. A perfect ideal society is what is known as a “utopia”, and is defined as, “An imaginary and indefinitely remote place”(Webster). Many people have accepted the fact that this place does not exist, but there are still those few who think that they are apart of one. Scientology is a prime example of something that brings all of those cons into play and some of your favorite celebrities are apart of Scientology, including actors John Travolta and Tom Cruise. Scientology is basically a religion/cult that involves celebrities, and normal people, feeding money into this religion and getting nearly nothing in return, …show more content…
They believe and worship whatever the leaders have to say to them. Winston in the Ministry of truth begins to realize that his job is nothing like it sounds like. This society changes old history, along with altering facts and making change seem insignificant. When the leaders change major historical and economic events like, “At just this moment it had been announced that Oceania was not after all at war with Eurasia. Oceania was at war with Eastasia. Eurasia was an ally”(Orwell 180), it just does not seem to affect the citizens of Oceania in the slightest. The citizens of Oceania sit back and act as if this piece of information is irrelevant and nothing has changed nor affects their lives at all. This is due to the fact that they are limited in the amount of education and vocabulary that they have readily available to them. The citizens of this terrible society are also under the impression that they cannot even think something bad or else they will be punished for it. Everything is out of the question when it comes to freedoms, “A party member lives from birth to death under the eye of the Thought Police. Even when he is alone he can never be sure that he is alone...He had no freedom of choice in any direction whatever”(Orwell 210). The people of Oceania are under constant surveillance and have no freedoms at all. There is a …show more content…
Leah acted on a show called “The King of Queens” in the late 90’s and early 00’s and is now very famous for her book that she recently wrote titled “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology”. She was inspired to write this book because she was a part of Scientology every since she was a kid for 34 years, and had just left the terrible religion in 2013. When asked in a tv interview, “Is Scientology a cult? Did the church brainwash you?”, Leah Remini explains how Scientology got her when she was very young and is very much like a cult when she says, “So when you're indoctrinated when you're very young, as I was, and all the information that you receive is from Scientology, and you're not allowed to look at other things because you're penalized for doing that, yes, that is the way cults work. They cut you off from information from the outside world and they start to sequester you by saying everybody else is your enemy”(Abramovitch). This reverts back to the dystopian trait that is “Citizens have a fear of the outside world”. This not only tells you that people of dystopian societies are scared of the outside world, but more importantly uneducated about the world they live in. She talks about how you are not permitted to talk to other people about these things. Similarly to 1984, how Winston cannot think about what might have been the truth about the past,
There are many groups that hide behind religion in order to get these benefits. Scientology is one group that refers to themselves as a “New Religion.” They protect themselves with this right in order to get away with their actions. There have been many reports accusing Scientology of exploiting members physically and financially. They get away with these illegal activities by lying. Lying is something that the founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, has presented as acceptable in the religion, which isn’t tolerated in many real religions. However, if the Charter was to address groups like Scientology with more severity, they would not be able to hide anymore. No longer would they get away with their crimes, but these groups, and so-called religions, will actually face the consequences. In addition, freedom of religion is misused when these groups go against their religion. This refers to religious movements that state they are preaching a religion. In reality, they are going against the basic principles of that religion to do what they feel is right. For instance, many cults like the KKK are based off Christianity, but they don’t follow Christian principles. They do this so that they can have the benefits of being a non-profit religious group, like tax exemptions, but then take advantage of this label to perform hate crimes and get away with them. For this reason, it is
According to Remini, people want to join the Church of Scientology because they think that they are “helping mankind.” However, she said
The church of Scientology has been the subject of controversy since its inception. Its methods and beliefs have attracted the attention of scholars from around the world. The church has been under government investigation and has endured a countless amount of lawsuits (Reitman 14). It is also a hot topic by the media with several endorsements by some of the most recognized Hollywood celebrities. However, the main topic of debate regarding the Church of Scientology is its status as a religion. Some members claim that the church has helped them overcome their struggles and that they are happier people, while others condemn it as a dangerous cult (Sweeney). The church of Scientology is a religious group whose purpose is to retain their
Most people today have a limited understanding of Scientology and tend to believe that it is not a bona fide religious ideology. However, it is actually similar to most religions and by looking at the concepts that it puts across one is probably to acknowledge that it is actually very complex. Scientology is a modern religion and it can be best understood by comparing it with an older religion such as Christianity. Conservative Christians feel that this religion stand against most values promoted in the Christian world and that it would be difficult and almost impossible for a person to respect both of these religious ideologies.
To effectively evaluate Scientology and it’s inclusion on the world stage, one must first look back to the roots and beliefs of other world religions and draw comparison. By contrasting Scientology with other religions, accurate conclusions can be made on various aspects of its existence, such as its validity, survivability and morality. According to
Behind the scenes of Church of Scientology tried to hide to the public comes to light. The many of physical abuse in the organization was for starters “Medication.” Scientology has a way of doing things that they think is right because David Miscavige or L. Ron Hubbard said so. “The Purification Program” started when Miscavige believe that if you take high dosage called “Niacin” 5000 mg per day, it would remove any drugs and toxins from your body (Scoobe 2013). Scientologists needed to stay at sauna for a few hours or months because they had this negative energy that it needed to get rid of, but it had it’s own side effects. One of the members of Scientology in that time claim gray poses were coming out of her body, but none of the carers did
The Church of Scientology began in the year 1953 and is one of the world's newest religions. In this essay I will address three questions: Who was L Ron Hubbard? What is the doctrine of Scientology? How does Scientology qualify as a religion?
Tom Cruise who is the poster boy for Scientology -- it's difficult to talk about one without talking about the other. That's an alarming but unsurprising mindset.
Beliefs held by Scientology have always been thought to be controversial and complicated. The most controversial beliefs being they expel members if they do not follow their moral code, belief of creation Scientology has, or how humans came to be, and the beliefs they have regarding the afterlife. If every religion was looked at under a microscope and scrutinized in the way Scientology always has been, there would be no followers to any religion whatsoever. Every religious community has practices they would rather they no longer preach, and dark parts of their history. Christianity has an entire old testament to the bible they want to be ignored, as well as having many Christian terrorism organizations who try to represent the worst scriptures in the
The founder, Lafayette Ronald Hubbard did not want to pay taxes anymore and churches are the only organizations that do not have to pay taxes. Scientologist do not just believe one thing, but they could be more than one religion. Some Scientologist claim to be Catholic as well as a Scientologists. The way this organization works, is by charging people money. You start on level one and to get to level two you have to pay a certain amount of money, and to get to level three you have to pay even more money, you do this throughout your entire time of being a Scientologist. If you want to leave the religion, the church will put out a bad word about you, making sure you will never get a job and that your reputation is ruined. Scientologists are said to be subjected to mental and physical abuse, while pay tons of money. The whole point of Scientology is to purify your mind, so Hubbard, like the nice man he is, came up with his own health regimen. Hubbard’s health regimen consisted of a grueling, excessive system of saunas, exercise, and vitamins he created himself. Hubbard and the other Scientologists targeted people, not telling them what they were getting into. They were told they were enrolling in a self-help plan, but no church affiliation was ever mentioned. They would trap people, making them pay an astronomical amount of money for help that really was not very beneficial. The help that they received was through a process of going “Clear”. Becoming “Clear” is apparently something that everyone wants to be, but was never possible until Dianetics came along. A “Clear” has no engrams, meaning they no longer hold onto their traumatic memories. It’s said that “Clears” are free with their emotions and that they can think for themselves without other emotions getting in the way. To become “Clear” you simply have to start your Scientology journey. This process of going “Clear” continues as long as you’re a
“Scientology is a religion that offers a precise path leading to a complete and certain understanding of one’s true spiritual nature and one’s relationship to self, family, groups, Mankind, all life forms, the material universe, the spiritual universe and the Supreme Being.” (Scientology Beliefs & Practices: What is Scientology?)
Many people have heard of the revolutionary new religious practice called Scientology. However, the majority of people who have heard of it, have little knowledge of the principles and practices behind the religion. In fact, there is a dark side behind Scientology, and much speculation that the religion is a brainwashing cult. Many people are opposed to the religion because of its secretiveness, its extreme methods of teaching and its alleged use of mind control.
After spending a quarter of a million dollars on books and spending many hours of her day at auditing sessions, Mrs.Richardson was put into a re-indoctrination camp in order to reintegrate her into the religion. This whole process began when a higher ranking Scientologist found an issue with her paperwork from a few years ago. Mrs.Richardson must now pay even more of her hard earned money to get more books and audio tapes to listen to. She now starts to contemplate whether this is really for the better of her religious experience or if it is just another way to make a profit off unsuspecting people. This is the problem with Scientology; deep down underneath the church facade, it is a business. The Church of Scientology is a disastrous, malevolent,
Scientology, defined as the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life, its aim, according to Hubbard is to create a civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war; where the world can prosper and honest being can have rights, and where free man is free to rise to greater heights (Wiki 2016). Sounds nice, but then again so does finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The originator of the concept of dianetics and scientology is named L. Ron Hubbard, born 1911 in small town Tilden, Nebraska. Said to be a prolific writer of pulp magazine, adventure, fantasy, and science fiction, in 1948 Hubbard wrote a book titled “The Original Thesis” outlining his ideas for a new form of
The Church of Satan and the Church of Scientology are both new religious movements that share a fascination with the individual “self” in which they place a lot of attention on this concept. I believe the reasoning for such a focus on the self is because conventional religion never emphasizes it. With that being said, both L. Ron Hubbard and Anton Lavey went on to capitalize on this. They are two charismatic leaders, wanted followers and therefore they tapped into an area that was never discovered before. New religious movements tend to focus more on areas where their previous religion never touch on, or restricted people from thinking that. With that being said, these two leaders are suppose to add to people’s lives and that they did, although one seemed to care more about people’s money. That would be L.Ron Hubbard a former Navy officer who was twice relieved of duty for erratic behavior. This man is just difficult to get an understanding of his personality. While learning about L. Ron Hubbard it was clear that this man is just looking for money. With program after program and books being pushed on to members to buy, it looked like he started this religion because he needed a backup plan. It does not appear that the Church of Scientology really cares about its member's individual “self”. And it is the opposite of that with the Church of Satan with members are not given the runaround, they are told from the beginning to explore “self” for themselves only.
