Evidence-Based/Scientific Management directly supports the mission vision and guiding principles of some healthcare managers. As Evidence-Based Managers, it is critical to understand that everyone is not going to support “Evidence-Based” management. However, it is an essential tool that can be used to improve managers overall efficiency and effectiveness of any organization. The major test and prospects for today’s complicated healthcare delivery systems require that leaders take charge of their operations. A strong operations focus can reduce costs, increase safety, improve clinical and non-clinical outcomes, and allow an organization to compete effectively with an uncompromising market (McLaughlin & Hays, 2008). Performance improvement projects should be methodical and efficient. Without a well- defined process, confusion is likely to ensue, and the performance improvement panel might not achieve the required results (Spath, 2013).
The researcher will discuss the history of healthcare management and the case “for and against” scientific/evidence-based management. In addition, this paper will further to describe Great Britain’s healthcare policy and evidence-based practice; performance improvement tools, and Six Sigma. Research and best-practices are an integral part of evidence-based management(EBM) and allow an organization to successfully implement EBM into their facilities. HSHS-EWD is a group of four hospitals that work with several clinics and healthcare providers to promote the health and well-being of many local communities. Connie Dorn, manager of central scheduling and prior authorization, is located within the revenue department and oversees registration and scheduling of the four different hospitals. During her 10-year tenure with the hospital systems she has seen many changes occur that have been beneficial to the hospitals, patients, and staff. Management meets on a continuous business to discuss areas that need improvement in order to stay on top of the latest advancements in the medical community. Connie currently sits on many boards, teams, and groups within the hospital system and is very experienced in the utilization of research and best-practices in regards to EBM. She recently utilized these skills while seating on a team that was trying to find a solution to denial of claims and poor customer satisfaction due to lack of authorization being in place. During the research phase it was discovered that the authorization team was obtaining authorization, however, physician offices were ordering the test incorrectly causing the radiologist to update the orders. Her team eventually found a solution that is in the process of being rolled out system wide called ACR-Select.

Evidence-based practice will be extremely helpful among the hospital setting because it will allow for me to learn from reliable resources. Using evidence-based practice thus far has helped for me to learn about different cultures and become more prepared when meeting with patients. I will continue to work within the hospital setting and need to be sensitive of how different cultures feel about the medical system as well as treatment options. At times, I have found myself wondering why my patient does not want to go a certain treatment route and many times I can use evidence-based practice to get a better understanding. Many times evidence-based practice has allowed for me to share articles with coworkers and have dependable evidence to fall back on when advocating for my patient within team meetings.
Healthcare management is a great, complex, and dynamic field. Like any business, healthcare requires exceptional administration to keeps its operations effective and smooth. Notably, the healthcare field is constantly growing, calling for the expertise of skilled administrators with the capacity to manage hospitals.
