Statement of Interest: School Counseling
My main career objective is to help children and adolescents throughout my entire career. I want to promote a healthy environment for children to learn and become well rounded. A degree in school counseling would allow me to work with children and adolescents in a hands on way and introduce them to activities, volunteerism, colleges, and to help them find their own passions.
I have job shadowed a few different career paths that I have had interest in throughout my college career (school counselor, social worker, and nonprofit advocate), and I fell in love with the idea of working in a school as a counselor when I job shadowed at Portland High School in Tennessee. I job shadowed three different counselors and found that not only did I love every aspect of the job, but also that my traits and skills seemed to fit the skills needed to thrive in that position. First, I am extremely

Second, I am excellent at multitasking. When I job shadowed I learned very quickly how important it is for a guidance counselor to multitask because each counselor in a school juggles several different students, testing information, scheduling issues, etc. While working towards my Bachelor’s degree I also maintained multiple jobs at the same time. Without the ability to multitask, and also be organized, I never would have successfully completed college. Third, I have the ability to see where I am failing or lacking and try my best to reverse or change that. For example, my GPA is not exactly where I would prefer it be. When I was in high school I overloaded myself with too many dual credit courses. I was not prepared for the
Working in various school settings, I have been exposed to merely a glimpse of the future in which I pursue. I believe that this passion is driven by looking at my own school counselors when I was younger and realizing how great of an impact they have had on my life. From the counselors in elementary school that have helped me resolve issues with other children over a stolen crayon, to my counselors that pushed me over my limits at Rutgers University, I have become more aware of the positive impacts they have had on my life. I only aspire to be as great of a counselor to others, as they have been for me. This program embodies major values that I possess and would want to expand on in order to support the youth. Through the counseling program, I hope to gain more experience about how to help individuals in various topics such as academic support, self-development, and building relationships with these young
Even before becoming a bilingual teacher, I always wanted to be a school counselor. I have this need to help others. When I was in high school, I was going through a tough moment because my parents were divorcing, and I had this wonderful school counselor who listened to me. She was so kind, attentive, and respectful. She made me feel comfortable enough that open up to her was a breeze.
I desire to pursue school counseling as my career to become an effective and successful leader in this profession. Why? I have always held a passion for touching the lives of the youth in a great and positive manner. A licensed school counselor entails helping students with academic achievement, personal/social growth and career development, ensuring students become the industrious, well-balanced adults of tomorrow. while, operating as a professional school counselor involves me obtaining the appropriate knowledge and skills that will support me with providing exceptional service for clients. I believe that I can obtain this intelligence here at Capella University. I comprehend that as a professional school counselor I would be expected
For example, my grade in English, 78.6 percent was caused by my slow transition into college level writing. My grammar on the writing assignments is something I struggle with, because I write the way I talk. I am trying to work on my grammar by using the proof-reader from paperrater.com. I am also trying to work on my paper writing skills by doing a lot of pre-writing strategies. Also I did not do as well as I wanted on the math placement test because I did not prepare myself properly for the test. I was under the impression that the test was going to be on majority of the things we learned in class but to my surprise, the test had trigonometry on it. I think if I had better prepared myself, I would have done better and placed in the class I actually wanted. My time management skills needs a lot of improvement, my financial and professional goals were not completed because of this. I was so focused on completing homework and ended up completely forgetting about those two
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the Bureau of Labor “the employment of school and career counselors is projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Increasing school enrollments should lead to employment growth of school and career counselors”.

I was lucky enough to have an amazing counselor at my undergraduate college. Jennifer Rooney, Director of Career Development and Engagement at St. Joseph’s College, provided me with amazing advice regarding school counseling. She motivated me to follow through with my dream and encouraged me to use my past experiences as a way to succeed in the field of School Counseling. Working with children is my
This is Vicky Chang, a school counselor graduate student from Fresno State. I plan to take Counseling 298 in the Spring of 2017 and wanted to ask if you would be willing to send me the proposal I need to submit prior to taking this course next year. I will be taking ERE 220 this upcoming Fall semester, but wanted to start collecting information regarding my project over the summer. Thank you.
It was during my senior year of college that I decided I wanted to become a school counselor. Up until my senior year in college at Penn State I did not know where I wanted to take my career but I knew I wanted to work in a school setting and I knew that I wanted to work with kids. When it came time to choose an internship site for my last semester, I chose an alternative school called Buxmont Academy in Bethlehem where I would be shadowing two of their school counselors as well as engaging with the students themselves. I got to work with these children on a more personal level, gaining an understanding of their emotions, experiences, and difficulties, as most of these children came from broken homes, and drug and alcohol related settings. I am interested in becoming a school counselor because I want to help. When I become a counselor I want to make a difference in a child’s life whether that be by simply giving them support that they might not have in their lives or helping them make changes to better themselves and their futures. A counselor has such an important role in helping to shape young children and that is something that I want to be a part of.
Obtaining a Ph.D. in counseling psychology will give me the outlet to do just that. At a young age I lost my mother to pneumonia, leaving my sisters and me distraught. Coming from an African American home, there was a stigma against psychologists. Instead of us receiving the psychological help that we needed in order to handle our loss, we were expected to cope with it on our own and that resulted in us suppressing most of our feelings. Members of my family did not see the value of going to talk to a stranger about the issues going on in our personal lives. Similar situations to mine happen often in the African American community. This experience is what strengthened my desire to become a counseling psychologist. There is a need for more African Americans in the counseling profession. African Americans should not have to question whether to seek psychological help. I want to be a familiar face so that I can contribute to African Americans feeling comfortable with turning to professional psychological

As I become more educated in the field of school counseling, I realize how important previous life experiences are, as well as the skills that I have learn from past jobs, and all through out my academic career. In my life the different roles that I hold, from being a mother, a wife, student, and an employee all contribute to my professional development in some way. Through the experiences in which each role presents it helps me to be able to relate in some way and gives me the ability
I am currently employed by the Department of Defense, U.S. Army, and Information Management Command as an Education Technician. Having to advise and assist Soldiers in person, by phone and by internet seeking continued education using military educational benefits has changed my career interest. I decided to pursue my goal in Counseling. I am interested in completing my Master’s program so I can become more competitive in the Education and Counseling field of study. By completing this degree and advancing my knowledge both academically and professionally I will become more competitive to compete in the career field of counseling while working for the federal government.
This is a profession that I find to be very rewarding, but challenging as well. Through my education at Clemson, I feel that I will be ready to take on the responsibilities of being a school counselor and change students’ lives one step at a
School counseling as always caught my attention. When I started my higher education, I had a focus on studying Elementary Education. However, after completing a college assignment for one of my psychology course, I found a very interested area in Psychology which is counseling. Since then, I have falling in love with counseling, and have spent a lot of time researching the career. I have conducted different interviews and have engaged in different counseling events that have helped me get to know the career. Therefore, when given this assignment, I felt more than prepared because I have spent a lot of time researching this career. However, I used the given source, ONET, to have more of a broad understanding about School Counseling.
