In Illinois, there is a gray area as to when and when you cannot stay home alone. But when it comes to assistance there is an age limit in how long you can get help. Working in a school-age program within a daycare I have experienced and seen a lot of situations and reasons as to why school age programs are so important. And the truth our children are children for a long time. Many of our [parents are single parents and are not at home when their students get home. So, who is there? What are they doing? Having a structured program benefits the community. It keeps a lot of kids from walking around the neighborhoods with nothing to do, keeps the out of the video games and television, and can even keep youth out of criminal activities that they could be recruited for within gangs. Structured programs help with homework, gives skill building, allows the children to be creative, …show more content…
We need to have something in our community that our youth can look forward to doing, knowing they must be responsible for it and that others are looking up to them. When they become 16 or so, they began to mentor the younger ones and help with homework and so forth. Why aren’t we teaching our youth to give back what they’ve gotten. Do community service just because, learn how to farm. We must have a vision for the youth so that they can have a vision for themselves. Try different things. I want to create an environment where youth are still learning and growing and still learning through play. Getting something new every day rather they are in dance, or theater, or wood workshop. I want to provide these things that most communities can’t afford, but exposure to an art is everything to a youth that has just opened his eyes to it. I want to provide the experience that they will never forget without exposure to them or someone does not have that vision to plant seeds for their
1.1 Explain why working in partnership with others is important for children and young people
More parents than ever these days are working outside of the home. This means that when the school bell rings, many children are left unsupervised and with no where to go but an empty house with no supervision. Not only that, but some parents are also struggling to provide adequate after-school care. Either they cannot afford the monthly payments of a daycare, or the programs are just simply not available to them. (Ansell, 2004).
This program’s goal is to reduce the lure of gangs for young children. While the program has been shown to be effective in studies, it is not viewed as well by officer at LPD. I do not believe this program is effective in the way that the department administers it. The program is designed to be taught in small classes, but the department and the school system put together classes of over sixty children. The program is viewed negatively by most patrol officer because the instructor is a patrol officer and is away from the shift for over 5 hours. The other officer are forced to do their job and carry the load of the officer that is busy teaching the program.
Encouraging students to engage in meaningful, sustained community service and get involved in causes that speak to
. The daycare and child development business is booming and profits are soaring. With more people looking at the child care field from different angles, these type of programs have more opportunities for more allies and partners, for funding and positive public relations, for improving, and “professionalizing” the programs that we offer to our children in our communities. Non-profit groups and higher education have increasingly partnered with schools, often including after-school hours.
Growing up I lived in different inner city nebighorhoods within Saint Louis city that had heavy gang activity. Although I personally never got involved in any gang ativity a lot of guys I grew up with or hung out with were directly involved in gang activity, which mostly consisted of drug transactions. Most of these guys were young black males between the ages of 15 all the way up to 28. All came from single mother households that lacked positive role models and lacked parentel supervision. I think sports based programs that seek to dismantle the gang culture as something to be appealing, while at the same time using sports to build confidence, teach discipline, and build a positive peer
With that being said, one of the main challenges of this idea - the idea that community service will turn our society around - is that inspiring teens to participate in community service is extremely difficult. This leads back to the issue of greed. If we could just put service above ourselves, then tons of issues could be resolved. However, I firmly believe that if we turn community service into something enjoyable, then the youth would be more willing to participate. Street cleanups could be fun and exciting by allowing kids to bring in motivational speakers to talk to them and their friends. Beach cleanups could be turned into late night swimming events. Surrounding newly planted gardens with personalized bricks, bringing out individuals' differences and showcasing their uniqueness, could promote a sense of ownership of such community projects. If we reach out to our youth's interests, then we might be able to achieve a common goal - the goal of creating a better, safer, and brighter future for all humankind.
They see the teachable skills it provides, as Dodge listed, “... learn how to juggle responsibilities. The ability to multitask… the value of responsibility and discipline,” that this work allows students to learn. These lessons and skills may be learned by students as they participate in the work they’ve taken part in but do they really learn them fully? Though it may be true that students can learn valuable lessons from community service and volunteer work, the gain is almost fully lost when it becomes a necessity as it becomes more about getting the hours than putting in the work. “Many students don’t feel inspired by their time serving the community so much as irritated that they were forced to do so by the school system…” wrote Koenig. This states that because the work became a forced action, the students are more likely to brush it off than truly take in a reap the benefits of their work. When the work gets brushed off, it loses its value greatly and even almost completely. Just because students can gain from service, doesn’t mean that they will take the gains in and grow from the experience. In fact, students are more likely to benefit from things like community service when it’s their choice to
Initially, teenagers should been rolled in a civil service program to boost their work ethic. If they did this it would teach them that you have to earn everything in life, it just does not give hand outs. Many people that have been enlisted in the army or another service program have shown to grow tremendously
According to “Holloway, 1982”, “there is an impression of emptiness in the role of today’s youth due to insufficient opportunities for self discovery through action.” Teenagers all around aren’t necessarily encouraged to volunteer to do things, sadly teens would rather stay home and sleep than go out and do something for their community. Which is not entirely their fault, they are not encouraged, they are given a choice between multiple things and pick what they want. For example, if there was a teen that had a choice between picking up trash at a local school or watch tv and eat, they wouldn't even hesitate to sit down on the couch. But if they were encouraged to pick up trash and maybe even offered a little reward for it, they would consider helping the school.
The purpose of this proposed study is to explore the benefits of a tutoring program. The tutoring program will target struggling learners, identified based on the following data: Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) assessment, Bi-Weekly testing, Benchmark testing, and Standards of Learning (SOL) assess-ments. The purpose of this proposed program is to minimize the amount of stu-dents that are referred to child-study. Bringing a student before the child-study team can lead to that particular student being found eligible for special education services. If a student is labeled under a disability of special education it often be-comes a part of their identity in a negative way. Increasing knowledge of the teach-ers, parents, students, and the community as well as decreasing the potential nega-tivity of labels is the goal of this program. Using survey method, a likert scale will be developed and implemented to ascertain findings to accept or reject the hypotheses. The findings and conclusions are to be determined.
As an 18-year-old tennager, I was forced by my parents to participate a summer volunteer program in my freshman year. Even though I felt that I was a victim of “tyranny” in the beginning, I realized that I actually enjoyed the process of helping people in the middle of the program. Now, I participate that program every year as an active member, and I have gained the personal enrichment that I am unable to learn from other sources such as math club or SAT preparatory class. There is no doubt that community service can bring essential benefits in helping students develop their moral value and future interest, and it should be mandatory because some students attempt to utilize community service as a tool for their own profit without the school supervision.
After school, from 3 to 6 p.m, is a critical period of time in a child’s life. After school programs help keep kids safe and inspire them to learn during that period of time. After school programs are organized programs that youth can participate in outside of a traditional school day. Enrolling children in afterschool programs would provide them with benefits that unenrolled children would not receive, such as reduce risky behavior and promote physical health. After school programs provide a safe environment for children, while positively impacting their academics, safety, and their future.
Discussing about volunteering to teenagers should be the first step for a better life, since teenagers are the future of tomorrow and they will leave a mark from yesterday. Volunteering has been such an important matter, that schools in many countries around the world established that 12th grade students will need certain hours of community service in order to graduate. But the frequent answers all the schools are getting are “Why do I need to volunteer? I have better things to do!” What people are forgetting is that each one of them is part of a community, a community that is not perfect and that the government sometimes forgets about their problems or needs, because obviously the government needs to take care of other things that require more attention. People are not only helping others, they are also helping themselves (Volunteering).
A young person should strive to support their local community for various reasons. Engaging in community service provides people with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large. Community service and volunteerism enables one to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service to those who need it most.
