There are four great women of the Pentateuch, but I think Sarah is the greatest of all. The following is the main background information about Sarah. Sarah Imeinu is the wife of Abraham and Mother of the Jewish Nation. Sarah was the first matriarch, and Abraham was the first patriarch (father), of our Jewish people. She was born and raised from the city of Ur, Kasdim, the Sumerian city of Ur.
Sarah’s early life consists of many different names for herself. As a young girl, she was originally known as Yisach (Jessica), which means “to see.” She is said to have been born blessed with divine inspiration. She was exceedingly beautiful, so her original name reflected her beauty. She was a prophetess and had the ability to see into the future. I see her as our mother. She a “modern” woman. She led her life with a clear vision and purpose. She had the courage to follow her own convictions, no matter how progressive they were at the time. She led her life as a role model for women of her era. She changed the world positively. She left the world a changed place because of her strength and insight. The most impressive thing about Sarah to me was her popularity, power, and strength. Siftei Chachamim, a famed 17th-century Torah commentator, wrote that Sarah’s level of prophecy was actually superior to that of Abraham. It is said that Sarah was such a powerful prophetess that God spoke to her directly, while to the others he spoke through a messenger. She was entirely free of sin, and she was exceptionally modest. One event that changed Sarah’s life was her giving birth to Isaac. God made a covenant with Abraham. This was that his wife (Sarah) would conceive a son. The couple both laughed at this promise. God’s covenant come true and Sarah gave birth to a son named Isaac. His name is ironic because it means
