The Sanctuary Model of youth residential treatment is of great interest to me, as it utilizes a similar approach to the trauma-informed care model promoted by many domestic violence and sexual assault recovery centers (including my current place of employment).
I do not view social work as a means by which to “save the world” or to even “save” another person, for that matter. To me, social work means providing others with the support and resources needed in order to stabilize their own situations and make the decisions they feel are the most appropriate. When working with youth, this approach is especially important, as they are still trying to navigate and understand the world around them. Learning experiences are necessary in order to provide
Social work professions need to understand the importance of how individuals interact both with other people and their environment, to have an understanding how individuals are affected by these interactions (Rogers, p. 2). According to Rogers (2016), “Social workers are knowledgeable about human behavior across the life course; the range of social systems in which people live; and the ways social systems promote or deter people in maintaining or achieving health and well-being. Social workers apply theories and knowledge from the liberal arts to understand biological, social, cultural, psychological, and spiritual development (p. 2). Their work with clients begins with assessments to evaluations of intervention and is based in and supports of the core value system of the profession.
PO Lemieux and Sgt. Manzi stated that they were part of a surveillance team. The premise is known to MOS because it is a KITE location due to numerous complaints of drug activity, illegal gambling, and prostitution. In the past, the premise was locked up with a fake storefront. On the date of incident, PO Lemieux and Sgt. Manzi observed the front entrance opened to the premise and went inside and observed non-party Sherri Clarke holding a clear plastic bag of cocaine and a bag of cash. Ms. Clarke observed the MOSs and went into the basement. PO Lemieux followed her into the basement, where he observed approximately 20 people in the basement with drugs and cash in plain view. PO Lemieux called for backup and contacted the DA’s office for
Social work is a career that I have always been interested in, especially working with children and families. Helping people overcome obstacles and making the most of themselves is a very rewarding and yet a challenging career. I’ll have the chance to meet a variety of different people with different problems from cases of abuse and neglect as well as supporting those in the care system. I am particularly interested in working with children and families who often form the most vulnerable service users, developing a professional and trusting relationship with them, hopefully enabling them to participate fully in society.
According to the National Association of Social Work, “The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. A historic and defining feature of social work is the profession’s focus on individual well-being in a social context and the well-being of society. Fundamental to social work is attention to the environmental forces that create, contribute to, and address problems in living.”
Children in the United States are faced with many challenges in their lives. Some are left to care and grow up on their own. These kids are left without parental guidance or a role model to help them along the way. Children in America are growing up angry, mean, frustrated and upset because they never got to live their live as a child. Most kids had to become mature at a young due to the fact that no one took on the responsibilities of taking care of them. Kids have more struggles, situations and hardships their now faced with but as Social workers we’re here to guide them with the proper tools to help them in their life.
The Guidelines from the Child Welfare League of America and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry help to ensure that children in the foster care system receive mental health treatment. However, services to address mental health needs continue to go underutilized for children and youths in foster care. In one national study “ Children and youth investigated by child welfare agencies following a report of maltreatment, only one-fourth of children and young people in need of mental health services had received any mental health specialty services.” (Villagrana, M. 2010). To better understand the underutilization of mental health services in the welfare system. Studies show that predictive variables that include age, gender, ethnicity, and abuse type are factors of why children and young people don’t always receive treatment. Furthermore, research also shows that parental risk factors also predict mental health services needs in children. Domestic violence and intimate partner abuse is
What more good to do in society than assisting children for a better, deserved lifestyle. Social working is nothing but a helping field that opens doors to kids that started off with nothing. “At times social workers will fail to overcome countless cases where the clients were given there undivided attention, and the best help one can receive but knowing you did the best you could in a case is what helps you move forward, and the cases you do succeed are the ones that over look that bad ones” (Martinez). Personally, I view this level of field work rewarding than anything else. The salary one receives as a social worker isn’t compared to the importance of the job itself and the difference you make in the life of young child, and the feeling of succeeding, I am sure, will be
Social Work is a career defined as “work carried out by trained personal with the aim of alleviating the conditions of those in need of help or welfare”. Social work varies in several fields, social workers work as part of multi-disciplinary teams with child welfare organizations, adoption and foster care agencies, hospitals, schools, prisons, mental health institutions, and more. Social work may leave the impression that it’s an easy field because it is assumed that all social workers do is serve others and manage paperwork but that is only a small chunk of the job. Social workers must deal with the ethical and emotional aspect of helping others. As a social worker, it is critical to comply with the National Association of Social Workers
The role of the social worker is not to change people, treat people, or help people cope, but to nourish, encourage, assist, and unleash the strengths within people. They
Previous to my two social work courses, I knew very little about social work. I have seen two movies, Precious and Fathers and Daughters, that have shown the work and responsibilities of a social worker. In the movie Precious, a teenage girl who was raised in Harlem, was subjected to physical, mental and sexual abuse. A social worker, Ms. Weiss, was assigned to her case to help her cope with her troubling life. Ms. Weiss displays the emotional struggle social workers go through while working with people who have been abused. We see this during the scene when Precious tells the detailed story of her sexual abuse from her father and Ms. Weiss cannot hold back her tears. I could see how that would be a very challenging fragment of social work

For a majority of my life, I wanted to be a pediatrician when I grew up. I had wanted to be a pediatrician due to my passion to work with children, in addition to enhancing the lives of children. As I continued to grow up, I realized that science is not my strong suit and I would never survive medical school. I do not recall how I learned about the profession of social work, but around the eighth grade I have known that social work was the profession that I wanted to pursue. The idea of helping others is what initially struck me as compelling because I did not understand social work in it’s entirety, but I knew that I would relish a life of helping other individuals.
Imagine that a child is out there living under a roof with bruises, scars, giving no sense on how to be loved or knowing what a true meaning of a father and mother signifies is a very big fear to not being able to do anything about it. Do not let the past affect the present of the future of a child that does not deserve the cruelty, hunger, homeless. Anyone can have their career planned out but to know how to do the major key points to be successful is the part most struggle in. Learning how to do the higher risks cases and the ones that take excessive amount of extra work is what depends on how hard they want to work to make it. Social workers are the angels that the children and families have been searching for to find peace and love within
Social work may not be the most respected profession but it’s a recognizable one. Social workers help people or groups identify their problems, determine their skills and capacities, what they are doing well, and how that was accomplished, and then analyze ways that those strengths might be applied to the identified problems. Social workers are helping professionals.
#1 A: Social work can be defined as a broad profession, with the sole purpose of improving the lives and relieving the hardships of the members of a population. Social work addresses many problems for the well being of society, including: health care, criminal justice and domestic violence, economic and public policies, child and family welfare, as well as homelessness. Social workers are trained professionals with the education and tools necessary to address problems from several different perspectives, with the intention of helping the masses and not just individuals. Social workers have the ability to inform people in need of resources available to help them achieve a wide variety of goals, whether personal social mobility, or financial independence.
