San Carlos Apache Tribe Case Study

The Yuma Tribe resides in what is currently modern day southwestern Arizona, specifically the city of Yuma, and parts of southeastern California. Yuma Indians lived in small settlements called rancherias that were located along the Colorado River. The climate is hot and barren with temperatures reaching over 100℉.

I chose to research the Ponca Indian Tribe because they started out in the midwest, and currently still live in Nebraska. The 4 elements I have elected to write about are the social organizations, their customs and traditions, language, and the forms of government involved with the Ponca Indian Tribe.

People are climbing on the Lakota tribe’s sacred tower. Devils Tower is in the Black Hills in Wyoming and is the first National Monument in the U.S. (Leonard). It rises 1,267 feet above the surrounding and is 5,114 feet above sea level (Devils Tower National Monument). Despite its significance to the Native Americans, particularly the Lakota tribe, many people visit this National Monument. Some visitors also climb the Tower. The Lakota tribe members have been living in the Black Hills for many years and perform many ceremonies at the Tower. Like many sacred places in Native American tribes, they have a myth about how the Tower came to be. The Navajo Native Americans experienced multiple struggles throughout their tribe’s history, mostly surrounding the problems to do with the United States military and the Spaniards pushing them from their territory. Although this was the fate of multiple tribes of Native Americans, the Navajo struggled intensely to leave their homeland. The Navajo were a beautiful tribe with multiple hardships. The Navajo tribe was formed sometime around the 1500s, and developed to become the largest Native American tribe. The Navajo tribe is one of the most well known Native American tribes in the world, and also quite possible the largest. The Navajo reservation covers a large portion in the state of Arizona, an is the largest known reservation, even having its own government. However, the history of the Navajo tribe is a rich and complex thing, spanning almost as far back as the settlement of the first human inhabitation of the Americas. There are not large amounts of documented history from the pre-european era of the Navajo, but extensive scientific studies and multiple archaeological finds have given us clues about the early tribe. The Navajo were originally part of a group in western Canada called the Athapaskans.

The word Navajo means highly cultivated lands. The Navajo tribes began in the 1500s. They survived by trading maize and woven items for bison meat and weapons (“Navajo Indians”). Climate change is occurring across the globe and particularly in the Southwest region of the United States of America. The Southwest has a long history of warm temperatures and drought, yet the climate is currently changing like never before. This research paper will identify various case studies of Arizona tribes being threatened due to climate change’s effects of rising temperature and drought. Rising temperatures as well as drought will continue to result in an increase in the melt of snowpack, reduced water sources, and changes in the ecosystem for various Arizona tribes. The sovereign Miami Tribe of Oklahoma is based in Miami, Oklahoma in the northeastern corner of the state. Originating out of the Great Lakes region, the Miami Tribe was forced to move to Kansas and then later to Oklahoma. The population of the community is 4,440 peoples spread across the country and world. A unique thing about the Miami Tribe is despite their small size and diverse geographical locations these people share a special connection. The Miami Tribe values a strong community life, tribe benefits, and opportunities for it’s people. These values explain what it means to be of Miami decent in and out of the community.
