I. Overview and Experience
Prior to my participation in the Kroger Delta Division Summer Internship Program I had very little knowledge of the grocery store or retail business environment and all of the moving parts that are necessary to produce a successful company. In addition, I had very little applicable work experience due to being a student- athlete competing in a year round sport. Participating in this internship allowed me to get an up close look at what the retail business entails and how to execute company, division, and department goals and sales plans to over 100 divisional stores and ensure that all of the store employees understand the scope of the business. By completing this internship, I now have a greater understanding and appreciation for the retail environment and can more effectively apply the knowledge I have gained in my undergraduate studies to a real work environment and my graduate level studies.
Over the course of the past ten weeks I have gained a vast amount of knowledge and have had the opportunity to grow my business knowledge with one of the nation’s most well respected companies. Although my time with the Kroger Company has been brief, the experiences I have gained are invaluable to growth of my career path in business. Through the internship program I have been able to gain an understanding of both day to day operations of an individual store and the big picture of division operations in the Delta office. Combining these two experiences
My experience as an intern at 3M consisted of carrying out laboratory research to ensure the safety and durability of the large-scale manufacturing medicine filter, Zeta Plus™. This experience advanced my ability to collaborate, think ahead, apply what I have learned in Chemistry and Mathematics, and increase my expertise in computer software. My current position in Community Relations at Travelers entails for me to communicate with and manage volunteer opportunities for over 3,000 employees, in addition to connecting Travelers with non-profit partners, event planning, and serving as a liaison in Saint Paul for my remote manager and team in Hartford, Connecticut. This position enables me to not only exercise and expand my communication and technical skills, but also allows for me to learn about myself. And lastly, as a Resident Advisor at the University of Minnesota, I have been able to serve as an academic, social, and personal resource for forty first-year students. As an RA, communication and time management have been at the heart of my success. As a junior studying Marketing and Computer Science, my interests lie within the space of sales marketing, technology and international business, and I strongly believe that Morgan Stanley will allow for me to expand my knowledge in these areas. I sincerely hope to continue this learning process as an intern this coming
The company that I chose to do my presentation on is Maurices Store. I worked in retail as a manager for 12 years at the former County Seat and one of my assistants is still working retail as a manager at Maurices here in Dubuque. I was interested in choosing retail sales because it is where I started and I wanted to see how it has changed over the years.
In this report, I am researching Nordstrom in order to gain information on if this company would be a good company for an undergraduate student to complete an internship with. I plan on finding out information on topics such as company culture, financial analysis, growth, and competition. I will look deeply into the company’s strengths and weaknesses in order to learn about sustainability and potential for long-term employment.
Allowing the student to successful learn and complete the business internship. I am very interested in becoming a part of Nordstrom’s team through its retail management internship. As I finish my junior year at the College of William and Mary, I am proud of my academic work, my positions in diverse organizations on campus, and my overall work experience. I believe that these experiences, paired with my creativity and work ethic, make me a great candidate for Nordstrom. This summer I will be able to contribute to Nordstrom’s commitment to providing customers with the best shopping experience.
A person with the right personality and attitude can influence other 's, and I feel I 'm a great example of that. My personal ambition to reach new heights has also motivated me to apply for the staff position on Skyblocky.
Excellent customer service creates customer loyalty. Porter Leath’s greatest promotion of their intangible service is “word of mouth”. Customers feel compelled to tell others about their families’ experience and success in the program. This intern lead to a long waiting list for this school year, to gain entrance into the
I wish to participate in the Keystone Internship Program because I am passionate about pursuing a career in public history in Pennsylvania. I fell in love with Pennsylvania’s rich historical tradition the first time that I visited the battlefield at Gettysburg. My time spent working for the National Park Service confirmed my love for Pennsylvania’s heritage. As I researched in the Gettysburg library, I kept discovering fascinating information regarding other cities and towns in Pennsylvania that also had treasure-troves of history. As a result, I decided to travel to many different historic sites, parks, battlefields, and homes in order to contribute to the preservation of Pennsylvania’s historical legacy.
As an Orientation Leader I serve as a representative for Florida Memorial University fulfilling diverse roles while becoming a friend and mentor to new students, the PR Director for Faces Modeling Troupe Inc. Miami Chapter ensuring the communication strategy is consistent reflecting the non-for-profit organization strategic vision, and an active member of the University’s National Society Collegiate Scholars Program building bonds with fellow members that will enhance my life both now and in the world beyond college, all the while striving to pursue a Bachelors Degree. Volunteering my time and effort on and off campus has and continues to instill lifelong lessons into my personal growth. I wholeheartedly believe that the person who should have the most vested interests in my career is I, therefore, I take precaution when making decisions that will be reflected throughout my college career. This summer, through Commissioner Barbara Jordan’s Summer Youth Internship Initiative, I was awarded an awesome opportunity to intern at El Dorado Furniture in the Marketing Department, which I insightfully claim to be an eye opening and gratifying involvement. It truly helped build my professional experience in my field of study.
The Tech Retail Association is a professional organization at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Membership to the organization is exclusive to students either majoring or minoring in Retail Management. While membership is open to both males and females, the group is largely comprised of college-aged (18 to 23 years of age) females. The Retail Management program’s faculty is also included in the membership. The group’s purpose is stated as being to “prepare individuals who will make a contribution to the retail industry and to society as a whole through quality education, research, and service” (“TRA”, n.d.). Meetings are held approximately once a month. Each meeting aims to address different topics pertaining to the retail industry. Examples of meeting topics include professionalism, industry innovation, entrepreneurship, interviewing tips, and community service. Each year, the organization strives to bring in a speaker who is… and has experienced retail industry. In searching for a speaker, the group looks for someone whom the students will find to be both relatable and inspiring. The reason for this being that the majority of the members of this organization are at a highly impressionable age. By hearing success stories from industry pioneers, they will hopefully be encouraged to pursue their life’s ambitions.

This research paper exhibits Trader Joe’s unique business strategy in the management skills that has built a chain of grocery markets, and the understanding of Trader Joe’s business model in planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. According to the MGMT8 textbook “planning is determining organizational goals and means for achieving them, organizing is creating structures and work systems, leading is inspiring and motivating people to work hard to achieve goals, and controlling is monitoring progress toward goal achievement and take corrective action when needed” (Williams, 2016, pp. 4-6). Trader Joe’s demonstrate the importance of the management process in planning, organizing, leading, and controlling in many different ways. According to Forbes article “Trader Joe’s stands out from all the rest of the grocery business because they have proven how cultural awareness can cultivate business growth, and a grass-roots marketing niche that draws viral consumer activity” (Llopis, 2011). Trader Joe’s is a private and a diverse company, and their approach and attitude are deeply embedded in the roots of the business model such as, product packaging, product selection, vendors, business layout, employees, and management. In addition, Trader Joe’s business model is to listen and to carefully respond to the needs of those they serve, and they encourage feedback from consumers such as, completing a simple response card that is available in every store. I seized this opportunity to learn everything I could about pitching, securing, and managing promotions from the head of the promotions agency. I worked with the consultants to pitch new promotions and helped secure a global promotion with Burger King for a Kids Meal program. Burger King was resistant at first but our determination to build a relationship and show our brands strength helped secure the promotion. I supervised the development of all the marketing collateral, point of sale displays, toys and trading cards that lead up to the promotion. Working with Burger King and their agencies was a great opportunity that expanded my perspective on the quick serve restaurant industry. The promotion generated 25 million toys in kid’s meals around the world and was so successful it was renewed for a second year. Working on this promotion was not only a great opportunity to learn about a new industry, but also helped me become a better leader with more confidence and a new ability to secure cross promotions.
