The AAPF, founded in 1996, “connects academics, activists, and policy-makers to promote efforts to dismantle structural inequality.” The campaign acknowledges the silence of fatal police shooting which effect Black women. While Black men are in the spotlight, Black women are unremembered due to intersectional invisibility. #Sayhername broadens the framework of who is affected by state violence and brings the names of Black women who have been killed to the surface. While “White women make up 64% of women in the US, [they] are 44% of fatal police shootings of women” and Black women and girls, who are only 13% of the women in the US, “account for a third of all women shot to death by the police" (US Census Bureau and The Washington Post in #Sayhername,
Police brutality and feminism are some of the issues the United States faces today. Police have always been an issue for people to deal with especially for the black community. Numerous African American males have encountered situations where they have been accused of crimes or beaten by the police. Feminism dates back to history where women were discriminated and degraded because of their gender. In today’s society, many of these conflicts still occur today and many prejudicial statements are made to downgrade women as a whole. In the book “Meet Me Halfway; Milwaukee Stories” written by Jennifer Morales, she addresses these two topics that people face everyday. In her book, she states the issues that African Americans face in
The sambuca was a large harp which was placed upon the ground, similar to the small triangular harp resembling its construction, but was much smaller and more manageable in size.
This article was published by Dissent Magazine, a magazine about politics. Kaavya Asoka the author of the article is a New York-based journalist that graduated of the Cultural Reporting and Criticism graduate program at NYU. In this article, Asoka interviews Marcia Chatelain, an associate professor of history and African American studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. This secondary source traces back to a year ago when the switch of focus in the BLM movement began. This article is meant to reach every home in America and inform the public that police brutality also affects black women. This source is used in the research because it supports the argument that BLM began to address issues of gender particularly violence against Black women in 2015.
A lot of cases that has to do with police brutality go unheard and forgotten about. Tanisha Anderson, Rekia Boyd, Miriam Carey, Michelle Cusseaux, and Shelly Frey. Kayla Moore. These names are etched into tombstones that stand over the graves of black women killed by police and were or unsolved so echoed at a vigil in New York City on Wednesday, where dozens gathered to show that these women should not be forgotten. For the first time, families of all these women came together to reflect on the lives of their lost loved ones and publicly share memories of their slain relatives.
Police have brutally demanded a system wide solution to help our local communities notice that “we matter” (Kelsh, “Police Interaction”). Whenever an Officer is abusing his/her power during an arrest or simply using racial slurs are considered police brutally. This matter shouldn’t be tolerated by the government, but surely has been for many past generations. Police brutally harm our local communities and cause emotional distress towards individuals. The embracement of the black community seems to be the current situation in society different race or cultures are seen as more acceptable, even though, they are minorities. #BlackLivesMatter addresses all the marginalization of different Black culture in our local communities (Langford, “#BlackLivesMatter”).
The article , “Police Violence and Citizen Crime Reporting in the Black Community” provided useful evidence that helped me support my essay and explain more into depth and connect to the book, “Meet Me Halfway; Milwaukee Stories” by Jennifer Morales. Nancy C.M. Hartsock’s book helped me gain new knowledge about feminism and apply it to the connection of both book and the police brutality article. I am writing this essay towards the people who needs to be inform about these issues even if they have never experience these problems, people should be more cautious of what today’s society is facing because it could affect the future in ways that will worsen the problem . With this essay, larger purpose is to explain how racism still affects the black community as a whole and how feminism is being discriminated. With the researched that I’ve done, many black men are disproportionately being racially profiled and targeted by white police officers because of their skin color and sexism and feminism is highly portrayed negatively that makes women look
Police brutality is a major issue in today’s society. Many African Americans tend to avoid the police for that very reason. A campaign was started in 2012 against police brutality and the unfair treating of African Americans entitled, Black Lives Matter. This movement was met with controversy as well as support from the American people. This movement has followed several controversial police brutality cases in the United States including, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland. All African American and all killed in the presence of a police officer, with no convictions. These three cases have been some of the biggest cases in the Black Lives Matter campaign. This campaign is determined to make sure that Black lives are treated just as equally as white live and Hispanic lives, because black lives matter
The brutality of the police force has been a long worldwide problem, but especially between the years of 2012-2016. Black people are being unjustly beaten and shot in plain sight for doing nothing while being unarmed. Journal of African American Studies “Blacks are viewed as deserving of harsh treatment in the criminal justice system” (482). “Black males with more “Afrocentric” features may receive longer sentences than blacks with less Afrocentric features like lighter skin and straighter hair”(482). Nowadays it is important to know about the police force. It’s important to know our rights as citizens and be careful around cops. Not everybody is good, but not everybody is bad also. In The New York Amsterdam News 21 people were killed by Chicago police in 2008. Entire families were being attacked. They believe it’s because of their skin color and how they are different. The year of racism started off with the world seeing the police murder of Oscar Grant. “The media have pushed people away from hearing the issue of police brutality, and it has fallen off of the radar screen.”(2) “You can’t give in. They will try to make an example out of you, try to break your spirit!”(2) African Americans say do not trust the cops with anything. “They will ruin you.”(2)
Our topic we’re discussing today is All Lives Matter vs. Black Lives Matter. The slogan “Black Lives Matter” came into use during the Martin vs. Zimmerman case, when Mr. Zimmerman was acquitted for the killing of Trayvon Martin, an African American teenager. After this case, there appeared to be a large amount of police brutality cases against African American, furthermore pushing activists to speak out against the racial profiling and racism. Even more recently, there have been suspected police brutality cases against African Americans such as Freddie Gray, Malcolm Ferguson, and Nicholas Heyward Jr, all African Americans, all victims of suspected police brutality, and all killed. The last victim was only 13 years old. The reason the
We often hear many stories about police brutality and the injustice acts that police men comment. Mainly focused on the lives of black men. There’s no problem with there being a lot of focus on the injustice crimes and police brutality that happens to black men, I love to see that people care. But, the problem that comes into place is when the black community and society tries to make it seem like it’s only a problem that black men go through. There are so many black women who go through the same problem, but don’t get the type of protests, support and media attention that a lot of these black men who lost their lives to police injustice did.
Police brutality is not a new subject. It has been around for numerous years, and like most issues, has resurfaced to the public’s eyes. The recent events brought up the question: Does there need to be a reform in the system in the police system? In this year alone, there have been countless cases of individuals being harmed or even killed by police officers for reasons that continuously are not explained. What has people more attentive to this injustice are statistics showing that most victims in these police attacks happen to be African Americans and other minorities.
My selection is over a dispute that is happening between the Sadducees and the Pharisees on the issue of false witnesses, those who had given false testimony, and when they should be executed. The decision comes down to two choices whether should be executed after the trial or after the accused had been executed. The Sadducees are arguing that the perjured witnesses should only be executed if they successfully get the person they accused executed. It is the official action of execution that should be the reason for the execution of the witnesses not just the intent and premeditated false testimony. The Sadducees arguing this position based on the verse, in the Torah, that states a “life for life” which essentially meant for the Sadducees that

Curium and Meitnerium are the only elements named after a female scientist. Einsteinium and Fermium. Both elements are named after Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi. Fermium was named after Enrico Fermi, a pioneer of nuclear physics, Fermium was discovered in 1952 following the first test of the hydrogen
After reading this chapter, I am shocked over how much violence towards women goes underreported. I knew beforehand that victims of gendered violence do not report their situation to the police for various reasons, ranging from fear to shame. However, I did not know that reporting of gendered violence is especially rare in communities with women of color. Realizing how minority communities expect the female members “...to maintain silence about sexual assault, to protect ‘family honor and community integrity’” (p.265) was both frustrating and heartbreaking. The fact that the community the woman is a member of, during the time she needs them the most, expects her to continue suffering with her current situation was depressing to read. I can understand how the minority community, and the minority victim of abuse, may want to keep the police out of their situation because of reports about police brutality. However, their denial of receiving help due to stigma against police, who are the most capable for ending the victim’s abuse, was tragic to learn about.
