Gay Marriage
Abstract
This paper discusses homosexuality in our society, particularly in granting homosexual couples a right to marry. The pros and the cons throw out a ton of arguments supporting their position. This issue, whether or not the same-sex marriage should be allowed, is extremely controversial and the debates never end. In this paper, I take the pro side by providing strong both qualitative and quantitative data, how the homosexual marriage can benefit society, how far they have fought for their rights, etc.
Marriage is commonly construed as a legal relationship between a man and a woman or between a husband and a wife to build a new family. According to Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, a family is “the basic unit in society having as its nucleus two or more adults living together and cooperating in the care and rearing of their own or adopted children.” In spite of this neutral definition of family, it is called neutral because the dictionary never mentions the gender of the adults; many people in our society do not picture lesbian or gay couple when they think about a family. In America, gay or lesbian couples cannot just legally marry as normal couples do in any state, except in Massachusetts; where same-sex marriage is allowed. Same-sex couples have to be ready to receive all the negative consequences because they cannot legally marry; for example, higher estate tax and insurance, difficulties in making end-of-life health care decisions for their
Santiago's Fight with the Marlin illustrates that determination blinds people to reality, humility proves that people appreciate the things they have, and independence proves separation creates loneliness and desperation. Santiago's fight for wealth and pride proves that determination blinds a person to the practical realities of life. After Santiago had been holding the line for a long time now his was cramping up. He says to his hand, “what kind of hand is that,...
A gay couple from Indianapolis who have waited to marry for years have been quoted as saying: “We 're positive because the mindset in this nation seems to be that it is unconstitutional to say that our marriages are different from any other marriage.” (pro-con,1) This means that gay people are staying optimistic. Prohibiting gay marriage is considered discrimination to gays because the government is not giving homosexual couples the same rights as gay heterosexuals, which is also unconstitutional. Therefore, same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples. (pro-con,1)
Authors use literature to highlight the perils of a theocratic government that perverts the beliefs of religion to maintain oppressive political power. Among the many writers who attempt to manipulate this style of writing, Margaret Atwood successfully enlightens the audience with her notion of the abused portrayal of religion through the use of her novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. Atwood argues against the risks of allowing religious belief to be appropriated for political ends through the dystopian society of Gilead, especially when it leads to the enslavement and oppression of people. The novel transcends time as it invites readers from all generations to consider the consequences of blindly adhering to fixed beliefs. Throughout the novel, she
Nestlé S.A. is a Swiss transnational food and beverage company. According to its annual report, this company is exposed to risk from movements in foreign currency exchange rates, interest rate and market prices. The foreign exchange risks come from transactions and translations of foreign operations in Swiss Francs (CHF). The interest rate risk faces the borrowings at fixed and variable rates. The market price risk comes from commodity price and equity price. The former arises from world commodity market for the supplies of coffee, cocoa beans, sugar and others, the latter instead arises from the fluctuations of the prices of investments held (Nestlé annual reports, 2015). Thus, financial derivatives instruments are used by this multinational corporation in order to hedge these risks.
“I now pronounce you…” At some point in a person’s life, they have heard or will hear those words. What follows, however, has changed somewhat over the years; although, the commitment has remained the same. Those words historically indicate that until the death of a spouse, that couple shall remain together. Who should be able to determine whom that spouse is for that person? Some people judge others for their sexuality and how it is affecting them, but they never stop and consider the positive influence that same-sex marriage has on people’s lives. When people marry, they do it because they love their spouse, and they want to spend the rest of their lives with that one person. How is the marriage of heterosexuals
Marriage is not precisely the same as it used to be interpreted. For example, women used to be their husband’s property. Sometimes the women were forced to marry whoever their parents wanted them to marry and most of the time they couldn’t leave the marriage. Nowadays women have more freedom. They can vote, they can run their own business, and they can marry whichever man they want to. The laws change as the people’s mind change. As they get more comfortable with the idea, they become more open minded with human rights. As of right now, there are ten states that allow gay marriages to be legal. Ten out of fifty is not a lot, but it’s progress.
Americans seem to be all freedom and equality, this is the main desire of just about every citizen. Most of society will say they support equal rights for all citizens. But as soon as the topic of equal rights for homosexuals, people become uncomfortable and uneasy, not knowing which opinion is right and wrong and right. Surprisingly the majority of Americans voted for the Constitutional Amendment, which puts a ban on gay marriage, however, the concept of gay marriage is still not considered a right the American people. This amendment entitles to equal rights to the gay community, ending toleration of discrimination in jobs, rights protecting gays from hate crimes, rights allowing advancement in government. Although the law
Jack Baker and Michael McConnell walked in the courthouse and payed 10$ and applied for marriage licenses, The clerk refused to give it to them, because he said to them that marriage was with a member of the opposite sex. When the clerk refused Baker, a law student, and McConnell, sued in state court, Baker mentioned the Minnesota statute and how it doesn 't mention anything about gender, Baker didn 't go down with a fight, he thought it was unconstitutional discrimination on the basis of sex. Baker likened the situation to interracial marriage, and that 's when the Supreme Court was intertwined with the situation, since then the Supreme Court passed the ruling that allows gay marriage to be legal in all states. It 's truly amazing that people find ways to allow others to find happiness and joy either with the same sex or the opposite sex. People have the right to love someone, whether or they are heterosexual or homosexual, love is for everyone, homosexuals are afraid to be who they are, they are scared of rejection, abandonment, and most of all abuse from peers and/or family. Homosexuals are treated "equal" around teachers, but when teachers turn around that 's when the torment begins and kids, and teens are bullied for their sexuality. Same sex marriage has so many advantages for America and some people can 't see that, such as adoption of children left by unprepared families, and even how the idea of traditional marriage has changed over the course of time.
Not too long ago, homosexual man and woman were victims of physical and verbal violence. Just because they were born with a different preference, they were insulted, discriminated, beaten and isolated from society. They were the ones being shamed for what they were, and made to believe that what they felt towards another individual was morally wrong and against humanity. Over the past decades same-sex relations were never considered, until same-sex marriage was approved as law in all 50 states(). Today we begin to embrace the lifestyle of homosexuals, and acknowledge the struggles of these individuals. Although same-sex marriage is a new topic for all of us, we are open to comprehend how marriage may assist these individuals in practicing a truly satisfying and harmonious life. This journey of understanding is built upon different standpoints of society. One of which, projects same-sex marriage as a possible advantage that brings commitment in the relationships and the benefits of being a guardian. In contrary, others believe this subject has created great change, confusion and nothing but a trail of thoughts, such as, what are effects of such companionship? Will our society suffer due to the redefinement of marriage and homosexual rights? Same-sex marriage still seems to be speculated by such groups, although, no negative effects were ever imposed, both on adopted children and their marriage.
Countless persons are against same sex marriage but in some ways support it. Many same sex marriage adversaries differ centered only on the use of the word marriage. Those adversaries to same sex marriage feel that the term marriage is defined by the public or religious beliefs and should be in some degree limited to only a relationship between man and woman. There is a discussion over what to call same sex marriage however it falls into account the true nature of what gays seek and opponents oppose. Gays seek full marriage equality in every way not the separate but equal status. Since marriage is a basic human right and an individual personal choice, the state should not interfere with same gender couples who choose to marry and share fully and equally in the rights, responsibilities, and commitment.
Have you ever thought about how it would feel to be discriminated against, just for whom you love? If you haven’t, that probably means you’re straight. Gays and lesbians all over the world often experience harassment, bias, fear, hate and more. And, it’s all because they love someone of the same gender. The discrimination doesn’t just occur because of a same-sex couple being seen together. What gets narrow-minded people even more riled up is the thought of a same-sex couple being allowed to get married. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, same-sex marriage is the state of being married to a person of the same sex or gender in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage. Throughout history, there have been naysayers that oppose
I was taught that marriage was between a man and a woman; I held that belief for many years until I came to the United States of America. Many people believe that same sex marriage is wrong because of personal beliefs, religions or their sexual orientations. Others might ask why gay marriage should be legalized, but my question is: why should other people be able to choose who marries who? If a man and a woman get married, no one seems to care. They are two people who feel affection for one another and those two people want to start a family and have a happy life. If we change the scenario a little bit and a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, try to get married it causes uproar, they are not allowed to be married or raise a family
Some states such as Iowa legalized gay marriage through the action of judicial interpretation based on the state’s constitutional stipulations while other states such as Vermont legalized gay marriage through legislation initiatives. These cases demonstrate the government is the sole body that can dictate the validity of whatever is to be regarded as a marriage, and in this case gay marriage. The power to validate marriage is still observed among the private citizens, religious institutions, in families and in the civil society as well. The society, religious institutions and the state seem to be influencing the degree of freedom of marriage by deciding who marries and who can’t marry. These parties’ involvement in the issue of marriage has significantly raised fundamental issues about the biased nature of promoting equity in granting marriage rights most especially to homosexual couples. The government engages in action of granting dignity to a potential couple for marriage. However, religious institutions take up the role of administering the right of marriage. The society should accept the existence of homosexual people because their presence does not directly harm or pose any threats to the society. In the article titled ‘Another Argument for Legalizing Same-Sex Marriages’, Donald Marron suggests that “It would benefit those who want to get married, while harming, as best as I can tell, no one. (In econo-speak, that’s called a Pareto improvement, and the
For years individuals in same-sex relationships have been the thing of ridicule and discrimination. However, this started to change in December 2000, when the Netherlands became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage (Gay Marriage Around the World, 2015). Not just accepting same-sex couples, but actually allowing them to marry. It would be almost 15 years later and behind 16 other countries that the United States legalized same-sex marriage. On June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court declared that same-sex couples have the right to marry anywhere in the United States. This would change many laws throughout the United States and the laws governing the military were not exempt. For an institution that just recently allowed individuals to
Same sex marriage is now allowed in all states across the country. But it took years and years for this “issue” to be finally laid to rest. The first state to legalize same-sex marriage was Massachusetts in 2004. There was not a last state to legalize gay marriage. The supreme court realized how many states were now legalizing it, so they just had all of the states left legalize it as well. ProCon.org supplies information that “Twenty-six states were forced to legalize gay marriage because it was the court 's decision, eight by state legislators, three by popular vote, twelve by state law, and one by constitutional amendment (Par 1). Some positive outcomes now that it is legal to marry the same sex is that the adoption process will be easier, and gay suicides will lower. Now that same sex marriage is legal, discrimination rates should decrease.
