Sam Houston was as legend reports a big man about six foot and six inches tall. He was an exciting historical figure and war hero who was involved with much of the early development of our country and Texas. He was a soldier, lawyer, politician, businessman, and family man, whose name will be synonymous with nation heroes who played a vital part in the shaping of a young and prosperous country. He admired and supported the Native Americans who took him in and adopted him into their culture to help bridge the gap between the government and a noble forgotten race. Sam Houston succeeded in many roles he donned as a man, but the one most remembered is the one of a true American hero.

Surprisingly, Houston resigned his commission in the army over false accusations concerning his involvement in slave trading.
Houston studied law in Judge James Trimble's law office in Nashville, Tennessee. Six months later he passed the bar and started a law practice in Lebanon, Tennessee where he was appointed Adjutant General of the state of Tennessee, with the military rank of Colonel. Next, he was nominated and won the office of Attorney General of the Nashville District in Tennessee. Sam later resigned to return to private law practice, but was soon elected by his fellow officers to the position of Major General in the Tennessee state militia. He had a history of bouncing back and forth between politics and the military. Nominated by Andrew Jackson's Democratic Party for the U.S. House of Representatives, Houston won the election by getting 100% of the votes. Not uncommon for politicians in the time period, Sam Houston badly wounded General William A. White in a duel fought 6 miles south of Franklin, Kentucky. Soon after, in 1827 Sam was elected Governor of Tennessee, replacing two-term Governor William Carrol. Two years later he married his first wife, Eliza Allen, an 18-year-old daughter of a plantation owner. Within two weeks of his marriage, Houston was announced as a candidate for re-election as Governor of Tennessee. Sam separated from his wife Eliza after less than four months of marriage. Houston, a Democrat, Southerner, veteran of the Mexican-American War, and hero of San Jacinto reigned unmatched and indefatigable in the Senate at his time, able to stimulate his colleagues even after it appeared as if they lost all faith. Before holding his position as the first Senator from Texas, Houston held the role of Commander in Chief during times of hardship during the Mexican-American War, undermining his disadvantageous amount of Texan recruits by achieving a victory against the entirety of the Mexican Army and claiming its independence. Afterwards, he held plenty of roles in the growing republic, elected as the first president of the Independent Republic of Texas, a member of its Congress, and for another term of presidency before the territory amalgamated with the United States. There, he rose to position as a Congressman from Tennessee, who, in 1820, supported the ratification of the Missouri Compromise, and later on in the Senate as a representative of Texas, eventually stated that he did not support the abandoning of the Compromise of 1850 regardless of his political party’s views. It is because of these themes that make Houston one of the most positive locations to live in.
Sam Houston made heroic decisions regarding Indian Policies. During the decisions he made during the Indian Policies he showed courage, concern for others, and loyalty. Houston showed courage because he stood up for the Indians and knew how hard it would be to relocated to a different place. He showed concern for others because he didn’t want anybody to get killed. Lastly, he showed loyalty because he respected the property of the Indians and the Indians.
Though he had died, his legacy was never gone, the city of Houston was name after him honoring his hard work and courageous act for the people. He achieved and accomplished so much during his prime. He led the way to many people, they trusted him, and he showed the people what a good governor and a great leader he was. Though he has had some judgmental call during his youth he managed to get back on track and set forth in accomplishing his goal. He was very successful even President Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln can see so much potential in him as a great leader to the citizens of the United States. After he died his legacy lived on many of which, in the city has a memorial, dedicated to Sam Houston, a statues and also public library that shows all of his hard work and life legacy.
To understand how became a Texas Hero we must first explore the struggles that lead him to Texas and eventually. Houston’s early years where less than promising despite being named after his famous father. Houston disliked working on the family farm and going to school. When given the chance to leave the hard work of the farm and work as a clerk Houston choose to runaway. When he ran away meet with and was accepted into the Cherokee tribe not far from his family’s farm. Here he found comfort and acceptance in the tribe. Years later he returned to the white settlement becoming a teacher and then joining the Tennessee Militia. Later he would serve in the United States House of Representatives. In 1829 Houston married Eliza Allen of Tennessee, however the marriage was short lived. After Houston’s failed marriage he resigned his office and headed west out of Tennessee where he rejoined living with the Cherokee. However, this time he returned depressed and took to drinking heavenly.
Sam Houston was a man of many faces. Whether it was a friend to the Indians, governor of two States, or president of the Republic of Texas, he always stayed true to his practicality and fought for what was right. Because of this Sam Houston’s name will synonymously remain with Texas Independence, and forever be immortalized in textbooks and novels alike.

He was born on the third of November in 1793, in Virginia. He and his family moved to Missouri, and by the age of eleven Stephen was sent off to Connecticut to attend a school called Bacon Academy.
