A phase change is when a substance changes from one state or phase to another. There are three main phases that normally occur and they are called Evaporation, Deposition, and Melting. Evaporation is where a liquid changes to a gas. An example of evaporation is when water drops form on the glass of a cold drink on a warm day. Deposition is where a gas vapor goes directly into the solid phase without becoming a liquid first. An example of Deposition often occurs on windows during the winter months. The story The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith is about a woman named Therese Belivet who sets out on a road trip with Carol to discover herself within the world. Therese is infamous for not being decisive with her choices because she always changes her mind. She never felt at home living with her remarried mother so she lived away from her mother. Therese is an everyday individual who is caught up with trying to make herself look good in society. Therefore, her thoughts and actions are usually between what she wants and what society wants. In Story by Robert McKee, he wrote about the importance of the protagonist’s desires, the inciting incident, and the novels controlling ideas which were included in The Price of Salt.

Although Salt to the Sea is a story about things that have been lost and people enduring extreme hardships, it is also a story about hope, family and love. In the book Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, almost all of the main characters go through extremely tragic and terrible events. However, these characters also experience family moments and happy times. Despite the fact that in times of war there is hardship, violence and death, love and family shines through the tragedy. It is the two youngest members of the group, Klaus and Emilia, who eventually find a family to love.

The 1954 film Salt of the Earth directed by Herbert J. Biberman, is set in New Mexico and is about the Hispanic miners working for Delaware Zinc, a mining company, and the plot of the movie is about how the miners go on strike till they are treated equally the same as the other non-Hispanic miners. The miners’ strike goes on for months and the company decides to hold out on the workers by scaring the old workers with new miners to take their jobs, and during that time the wives of the miners decided to take it upon themselves to put themselves on the frontlines with the men because the women are also fighting for something else sanitation. News gets out about the strike and many supporters send letters with money

World War Two resulted in a chaotic destruction that overwhelmed Europe. These feelings of dismay are concisely summarized in Ruta Sepetys’ Salt of the Sea.. An impactful quote states, “war had bled color from everything, leaving nothing but a storm of gray.” The war in 1945 had drained any and all feelings of hope and spirit out of European people. In it’s wake, the war left a cloud of devastation and despair. Florian and Joana have to overcome this war, their fate, and guilt in order to return to their past selves and survive their journey in a German and Russian warzone.

The purpose of this experiment was to find the amount and percent of water in a hydrated salt. Hydrated salt contains water molecules chemically bound to it while anhydrous salt is a substance that fire can readily remove the water molecules. Using the gravimetric analysis method, the sample salt was measured, heated, and was measured again after cooled down to room temperature; this procedure allowed the weight of water lost in the salt to be obtained. After two trials, the water in the salt was determined to have an average percent water of -35.04%. The null hypothesis, the heat will not affect the amount of water lost, was rejected ,however, the alternative hypothesis, the heat will allow for there to be water lost, was not supported.

Salt: A World History written by Mark Kurlansky in 2002 is his fifth work of nonfiction. This novel explains the importance of salt, a mineral our bodies need, but cannot create; more than just an ordinary condiment, a substance of life. The book jacket identifies the book with the tagline:

Many historical fiction novels recall well-known tragedies, but there is one novel in particular that tells the story of a covered catastrophe. Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Sepetys focuses on telling the unknown story of “the greatest maritime disaster in history,” the sinking of a German ship, the Wilhelm Gustoff, during World War II. Throughout telling the story, Sepetys portrays the theme of perseverance, as the characters face many challenges, but never give up. Despite the growing popularity of this novel, Sepetys did not gain her reputation from Salt to the Sea. Rather, she became the author she is today from her previously published novels, Between Shades of Grey and Out of the Easy. Septeys was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, but she is part Lithuanian. Growing up in the United States allowed Septeys the ability to attend Hillsdale College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in international finance. Like many others, I learned of Septeys’ work through her other novels. I have read both Between Shades of Grey and Out of the Easy, and thoroughly enjoyed them. Because I enjoyed her other works in a great deal, Salt to the Sea immediately made my “to-read” list. For this project, I knew I wanted to read a novel I would enjoy, and Salt to the Sea was sure to not disappoint.

The book begins at the start of recorded history, and highlights humanity’s dependence on salt, up to roughly present day times. It focuses on the effect salt had on, and its contributions to, humankind. The book details how salt affected, economics, religion, science, and culinary practices all over the world.

Why was salt so valuable that it was once used as money. Salt was valuable for many reasons. Salt had different values to different people. So valuable, that it was used a money for centuries. Salt had a various amount of uses and properties that made it so valuable to be used as a currency for over 5 Countries (TIME). “Salt is one of the most useful items in this world today and we would be in terror without it.” (Salt-An Amazing History).

The worst thing a parent can experience is when your own child commits a crime. Should parents forgive their own flesh and blood no matter what, and if so, what is unforgiveable? In what way can religion help the parent to forgive such a crime as rape or is it even possible? These dilemmas are mentioned in the short story “Spilled Salt”, written by Barbara Neely, published in 1990.

Salt is a raw material that is located below the surface. The salt deposits are dissolved in the water and then the brine is pumped and converted into salt crystals. When the brine is being boiled the liquid evaporates which leaves salt crystals and then they are later dried. A process like this takes about six weeks and can produce up to 45 tons per hour. After taking out all the scale buildup, only 75 percent of that salt is produced. Then we move to the round can production, which has two parallel high-speed production lines. There are 12 workers for each line and they break off into 2 identical lines. Each line can produce 9600 cans per hour. Because the production process has common procedures, workers on the line perform low-skilled, repetitive tasks that can be operated by 18 workers. These cans are in a shape of a cylinder with a top and bottom. The top part has a plastic pour spout and the cylinder is made from 2 sheets of chipboard. There is a two-step process in cutting the tub and first we cut it into long sections and then they are cut into can-sized pieces. The two sheets are glued together, which keeps the moisture out. The cans are then filled with salt and the pour spout is put in. The cans are then placed in pallets and shipped.
