For my community engagement I choose to volunteer at the SPCA here is Salmon Arm. I am still continuing to volunteer and hope to for the rest of the two years I am in Salmon Arm. It has been a really awesome experience, and I have learnt a lot from spending time there. So many animals are mistreat, seen as disposable, and forgotten which lands them in the shelter. Most of these animals are so sweet and just want some love but their families no longer want them. There are so many sick people in this world that treat innocent animals with such cruelty; it is honestly one of the most heart breaking things I have seen. It makes me think about all the horrible things that happen daily in this world, either to animals or people. That has pushed me
At New Melones Reservoir, despite the continuing snow melt, the water level dropped another foot last week. The water clarity is good and the temperature is slowly coming up, now averaging 76 to 81-degrees. Trout are showing signs of schooling over deep water and feeding on shad minnows. Trollers have been finding trout at 40 to 60 feet with Speedy Shiners, Needlefish, and ExCel lures. Night fishermen have been doing well by anchoring over fairly deep water and lowering their light to about 20 feet. This attracts plankton, which in turn, attracts shad, which will attract larger fish. Live minnows and nightcrawlers are choice baits. The kokanee numbers may be down, but the quality is good with some going 15 to 18 inches. Bladed lures may work well in deeper water as they create vibration which will attract fish. Scented corn on each hook is important. Big trout winner at Glory Hole Sports was, again, Bob James, of Murphys, with a 2-pound rainbow caught at 55 feet in the main lake. Big catfish winner was John Tennant, of Twain Harte, with an 11-pound, 15-ounce fish caught with sardine bait in the main lake. Bass fishing is good for those who specialize in that type of fishing. Hayden Lee, of Angels Camp, recently caught a 10 pound Largemouth Bass on a topwater lure and he had no net in the boat. He and a friend were able to boat the fish for photos before release.
It’s a beautiful day at the beach, the sun is shining down on you as you float and drift on top of the waves. As you lay there without a care in the world, you are suddenly interrupted by a massive swarm of jellyfish; also known as a bloom. Not only does this send you into sudden terror, it also causes a much bigger threat to the ecosystem below you. The excessive growth of jellyfish swarm drastically lowers the population of fish eggs in the ecosystem. Because of this, fishermen lose millions of dollars. People in local communities are figuring out ways to solve this mass production.
I am helping out as a volunteer at Philly ACCT (Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia) located at 111 W Hunting Park Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19140. Tons of animals are abandoned love during these precious times and I want to be the one to change that. I know what its like to have a family that despise you and try to belittle you. I have a dog myself but I would never dare do that to him. Animals and humans alike both have a heart that yearns for love so why do we abuse each other? At Philly ACCT you can be the change that can put a smile on an animals face once
Have you ever been watching tv and the ASPCA commercial comes on, you know the one that has the song “Arms of an Angle.” The commercial makes you feel super sad for the poor animals that have been abused and victimized because of cruel behavior. They ask you to donate money to help these animals recover. What if when these animals do recover they were turned into Service animals. This is a matter of great concern in our community because we could help get most, if not all the animals adopted into a loving home. In order to understand the issue more completely, I looked at turning shelter animals into service animals. Other members of my Group project are looking at TNR/Euthanasia, Physiological aspects of owning a shelter animal, and Worldwide
Introduction: The Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) in the family Salmonidae and are a char native to Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Montana and western Canada. Compared to other salmonids, bull trout have more specific habitat requirements that appear to influence their distribution and abundance (USFWS, 2015). Bull trout were historically regarded as pests due to their voracious predatory behavior. It was thought that bull trout depleted populations of “more desirable” game fish by feeding on them when they were very small thus supposedly depleting the numbers. In fact at one point there was a bounty placed on bull trout tails in Canada to encourage fisherman to rid the waters of this “Bully,” which effectively eliminated them from certain watersheds (Donald, D. B., and D. J. Alger. 1993). At one time in the early 1900’s the Bull Trout thrived in the waterways of the Northwest. The Upper Snake Recovery Unit for the Bull trout occurs within central Idaho, northern Nevada, and eastern Oregon. Major drainages include: the Salmon River, Malheur River,
Albert Fish, an American serial killer, sadomasochist, and cannibal. His kidnappings and horrific acts throughout his life led him to be called by multiple nicknames. He was known as “the Gray Man,” “the Werewolf of Wysteria, “the Brooklyn Vampire,” “the Moon Maniac,” and most commonly “the Boogey Man.” Fish stated that he had “had children in every state,” stating around a hundred that he either molested or ate for his cannibal needs. That statement is not however true and still remains questionable as to what Fish meant. In multiple killings, he was a suspect in at least five during his lifetime. He confessed to three murders that police were able to track and was put on trial for the kidnap and murder of Grace Budd. Back in 1935 Fish befriended
An endangered species is a species of either plant or animal that is in serious risk of becoming extinct. This name became connected with the Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in 1994 after being petitioned to be put on the list for nine years (NOAA). There are two main reasons behind the endangerment of the Chinook salmon: over exploration, and dams. Since the times of the Native Americans, Chinook salmon have been highly sought after as a food source. Since then the salmon have experienced great amounts of overfishing. Along with water demands which has resulted in overuse of water and diversion of water had affected spawning sites and loss of habitat putting further strain on their habitats (National Wildlife Federation).
A: Overview of the Organizations Over the course of the semester I had the opportunity to be a part of two community service projects. The first organization I volunteered at was the SPCA in Danville. The Danville SPCA mission is to rescue animals who have been neglected and cruelty abused. The rehabilitate the animals so they can find their forever home.
Albert Fish was born, as Hamilton Fish in Washington, D.C. Fish was the youngest of his three siblings. Fish told everyone to call him Albert after a dead sibling and to escape his nickname “ham and eggs” (Murderpedia, n.d.). Many people in his family suffered from mental illnesses, one suffered from religious mania (Murderpedia, n.d.). Albert’s Father Randal Fish was a riverboat captain but then by 1870 he was a fertilizer manufacturer. He then dies of a heart attack at the Sixth Street Station of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1875 in Washington, D.C (Murderpedia, n.d.). After Randal’s death, Albert’s mother put him into an orphanage, where he was frequently whipped and beaten. This is where he discovered he enjoyed physical pain, the beatings would arouse him, and the other orphans would tease him. In 1879, his mother had a government job and took him out of the orphanage.
As surprising as it may sound, I have been doing community service since the sixth grade and it is a new experience each time. It all began with a community clean up known as 'Keep McAllen Beautiful' as we got there everyone seemed excited to be there. It was beautiful to see such unity inside of my community, and I decided from then on that I would like continue helping out where it is needed. As I joined the National Honor Society my chances of providing my services increased, and I decided that I would assume a position of leadership when needed. I became the society's president, which allowed me to develop my time management skills, creativity, and efficiency. I organized an fundraiser for the hurricane Harvey disaster victims where all
Over the summers of high school I have been a volunteer at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. My duties as a volunteer included cleaning up cages, kennels, floors, and dishes, as well as comforting and walking the animals. I have loved animals for as long as I remember, so it was very satisfying to be able to help out these animals in need. My favorite part was seeing how much their days were made just by getting some care and affection. Furthermore, I have just recently started volunteering at the Mercy Hospital. I think volunteering at the hospital will help expand my knowledge of health career jobs and medical terminology. I plan to volunteer a large amount of my time to help out the patients and staff at
Albert Fish, the iconic serial killer known as ‘The Boogeyman’, ‘Grey Man’, ‘The Werewolf of Wysteria’, ‘The Brooklyn Vampire’ and ‘The Moon Maniac’. He is considered to be the first Hannibal Lecter and was rumored to be the soul inspiration for the popular novel character. Fish’s original name was Hamilton, but after his brother's passing he adopted the name Albert. At a young age he was put in an orphanage, due to his parents lack of financials resources. While in the orphanage he witness the beating of other children and experience the beatings himself.
I can vividly remember playing a game of ‘Go-Fish!’ with my Father. I began to grumble because my hand contained no matches and all around bad cards. My father consoled me by saying, “It's not about the cards you're dealt, but about how you play the hand.” As a 5 year old, I would have much rather preferred my father slipping me a wildcard than hearing some foreign metaphor; however, this is the exact philosophy that will determine my life successful when I reflect in 30 years.
In fish mucosal immune system is mainly associated with gut, skin and the gill; these are the main mucosal surfaces and immune barriers. Mucosal immune system is a major part that responds and protects against pathogens that enter the body via mucosal surfaces. An inductive site for mucosal immunity possesses organized mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and local and regional draining lymph nodes (LN), while the effector sites have distinctly different histological compartments. In fish hindgut seems to play vital role in antigen uptake (Rombout et al., 1993). Absorption of macromolecules by intestinal epithelial cells and many diffusely distributed leucocytes as well as intraperitoneal lymphocytes (IELs) are described in numerous fish
For my community service opportunity, I knew I wanted to go to the animal shelter. I have not been in a while and I saw this as a good reminder to go back. The puppies are always very cute, but there are many older dogs that don’t get the attention they deserve. Being summer and very hot, the dogs can’t stay out for long. A friend came with me and together we walked a few dogs. It is always sad to see the dogs who have been at the shelter for months. I have never encountered an unfriendly dog at the Humane Society. I truly believe I can make a slight difference in a dog’s day when I can walk them and give them some love and affection and remind them that they are important.
