Saint Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena, the first Colombian born saint, was canonized by Pope Francis in 2013 (“St. Laura of St. Catherine of Siena”). Having very little memory of her Dad, Laura Montoya y Upegui never had a strong father figure, however she never let this stop her from being who she wanted to be. Laura was an outstanding student, a true preacher of God’s work, and is remembered as a role model for all young girls.
Laura was born on May 26, 1874. Her life was normal for a small infant until disaster struck. When Laura was only two years old, her father died trying to defend their beloved country of Colombia. She was the middle child of three children. “The family was left in extreme poverty after all their goods were confiscated” (“Bl. Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena Montoya y Upegui*”). Her mother was too overwhelmed having to handle all the duties by herself, so Laura was sent to live with her grandmother. As she grew older, her mother needed financial help. To assist these difficulties at age 16 Laura applied to become a teacher despite her non-formal education. This led her to be said as culturally and academically ignorant, however Laura was accepted and shined above all the other

Laura of St. Catherine of Siena is recognized as a role model for all girls because she stood up for what she believed in. “In an era in which women were supposed to stay by men, Laura dared to follow God’s call, even though she was called crazy,” stated Sister Aida Orobio. Laura’s most famous memory is of a doctor who was dying of lupus, kidney damage, and muscular degeneration prayed to St. Laura on night then was completely cured the next morning (“Miracle Could Allow Canonization of First Colombian-Born Saint”). This event is what truly started her road to sainthood. Laura was beatified on April 25, 2004 by Pope John Paul II. Eleven years later, Laura was canonized by our very own Pope Francis in 2013 (“St. Laura of St. Catherine of
March 25th, 1347 Saint Catherine was born in Italy. St Catherine is the patron of firefighters, illness, miscarriages, nurses and sick people. During her life, St Catherine herself suffered illness' leading her to be the patron as apparent. At the age of 16, St Catherine had previously disregarded marriage, as she envisioned mystical experiences seeing guardian angels, transforming her into a brilliant minded young woman even though she was not supported with formal education.
Mother Cabrini Missionary To The World In the story called, "Mother Cabrini Missionary to the World", by Frances Parkinson Keyes, we learn the virtues of Mother Cabrini, the first saint of the USA and missionary, through a non-catholic named Susan Appleby. In Mother Cabrini shows her true devotion to God. On her trips around the world, she shows that she has limitless energy. She showed sympathy to the poor because they have a hard life.
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was born in Sant'Angelo Landigiano, Italy in 1850. She was born the youngest of the thirteen children by Agostino Cabrini and Stella Oldini, who were cherry tree farmers. Sadly, only four of the thirteen children survived. Born premature, small and weak, Cabrini grew up living in delicate health throughout her life. At the age of thirteen she went to school that was run by the Daughters of the Sacred Heart, and five years later graduated with a teaching certificate. She then applied for admission to the religious congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart. But unfortunately, these sisters reluctantly told her she was too fragile for their way of living, so she went to Codogno, where she became a head mistress
For my Saint report, I chose Saint Veronica. Saint Veronica is known as the lady who offered a fabric to Jesus so he could wipe his face while in transit to his torturous killing. The material is accepted to exist today in the Vatican and is viewed as a standout amongst the most prized relics of the Congregation. Saint Veronica is not specified in the book of scriptures, but rather is known not by Catholic custom and in the 6th Station of the Cross, "Veronica Wipes the Substance of Jesus."
After living a very religious life, Saint Katharine died on March 3, 1995 (Wallace) at the age of 96. Before her death she suffered from a heart attack at age 77 but miraculously survived (Smith). Five years after her death, she was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000. Saint Katharine was the second American born saint to be canonized (Catholic
Many recall St.(Mother) Teresa being
St. Margaret was canonized a saint in 1250 by Pope Innocent IV in recognition of her “personal holiness, fidelity to the Church, work for religious reform, and charity.” On June 19th, 1250, her remains were taken to a chapel in Dunfermline Abbey where she was buried before the high altar. Today, we celebrate her feast day on November 16th (the day of her death.) She is patron of Scotland and known as “The Pearl of Scotland.” There are hundreds of schools named after St. Margaret that remember her reformation of the church and help to the poor.
Ten year after her second marriage happiness surprised Julia, she knew the man who became her third husband. The true companero for the women she had become. The “first Muse” by Julia Alvarez show us that we have to overcome our obstacle in order to get successful. Julia had to deal with a dictatorship and bullying at her school but that didn’t stop
Saint Rose of Lima is the patron saint of beauty due to her remarkable appearance.Rose is an innovation to many, because unlike many people today, she loathed her beauty due to being too alluring. I chose Saint Rose because she didn’t like people being tempted by her or staring at her. Rose only wanted to satisfy her parents and God. I also chose this saint because throughout her early life, she did things people normally would not contemplate or endeavour. Her feast day is on August 23th on the modern calendar, and in some countries it is on August 30th.
The story of St. Hildegard of Bingen was unique from the any of the other saints. She started her life growing up with a holy woman as a mother who died when St. Hildegard was 38, and right after became an abbess. She was the head of an abbey of nuns and lead them into the arms of Jesus. She then started a daughter convent. St. Hildegard influenced the church through her countless devotions to God through the talents of seeing visions, seeing the individual love that God had for each of his creation and because of this, she had amazing stories to tell.
Catherine of Siena was born in Italy in 1347 at a time when political and religious changes were affecting the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Dedicating her life to the Holy Spirit from a very young age, Catherine pursued a life of purity and simplicity that served as a background to her great literary work, The Dialogue of the Divine Providence . Her work focuses on the importance of prayer and its transcendent power in human life.
Saint Philomena was the daughter of a Prince who governed one of the states in Greece and her Mother too was from the royal family. Unfortunately, her parents had no children, but they worshiped idols. However, they continue to offer sacrifices and prayers to their false gods. Certainly, there was a doctor from Rome named Publius, who lived next to them in order to check up her father. Publius was a Christian; seeing the suffering of her parents, inspired by the Holy Spirit, he spoke to them about Christianity and promised to pray for them when they accept Baptism. Clearly, the burning zeal of grace accompanied his words and enlightened they are perceptive and triumphed over their will. They became Christians and obtained their long desired contentment that Publius had assured them as the reward of their conversion. Eventually, Philomena was born; they gave her the name of "Luminous," an allusion to the light of Faith of which she had been, as it were, the fruit. The day of her Baptism her parents called her "Filumena," or "Daughter of Light," that means she was intuitive into the Faith. In addition, the love which her parents had for her was so great that they had her always with them. Philomena assured Jesus Christ that her virginity belongs to him. Meanwhile, her family had to go to Rome because her father had a problem with the Emperor concerning his province. Consequently, when Diocletian saw Philomena, he loved her and he wanted Philomena to be his wife. He seemed to
In “Religious Experiences”, Saint Teresa argued that her two experiences were valid because she was conscious of the lord’s presence. In this paper, I will be exploring the two religious experiences Saint Teresa encountered while analyzing the argument about the epistemic value the experiences could possibly have.
Saints are always different from everyday people, thus no one understands them in their lives, only a lot of years after their death. Joan of Arc was a saint like this as well, she was too far ahead of her times and was killed by her fellow men, because they didn’t know what else to do. She was canonized in 1920, after 489 years of her death. In my opinion, she was not only a saint, but meant to be an angel and showed a good example to all of us, how to behave ourselves in the name of honour, honesty, and glory.
It is argued that the first saint ever canonized was Saint Ulalric by Pope John XV in 993. Others believe that Saint Swebirt was the first, being canonized by Pope Leo III in 804. Many lean towards the Saint Ulalric due to actual records kept of his canonization as opposed to Saint Swebirt which there are no records for. The question on the exact number of saints in the Church is a whole other problem. There are simply too many to properly count especially since the term ‘Saint’ was used by early Christians to honor the martyrs during the Roman persecution of Christians from 30-100 A.D. Angels are also hailed as saints one example being Saint Michael the Archangel who is arguably among the most popular Saints throughout history. Just as there are different entities as saints, there are different types of saints. Martyrs are the saints that died for Christianity, Confessors, despite the name, are saints that died of natural causes and lastly Patrons who are considered defenders of a specific group or country. Take a very well-known and revered being in the Mexican and Chicano community; the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is the patron of the Mexican Country but this doesn’t mean she is the only one the public prays to. Catholics in Mexico pray to various other saints as well for different
