It is very important that you realize your surroundings in a jail or prison. I made sure that I read every inmates file all 100 of them. You will soon realize that you are a supervisor over Inmates, some say you are a baby sitter as much as some do not want to hear that. It is true. I love my job. I love my co workers, best guys I have worked with. I want to make sure they get home to their families so we go into work the way we came out. Safety and Security is to help us and help the inmates and protect us and the public also the Inmates. We assure every ones safety, we keep head count at least three times a shift. We do not want anyone to escape. How being a Correctional Officer can impact lives in general Three major and minor points I want to refresh everyone on before my essay. The three major points are: We deal with the public, We deal with the fact that our lives are in danger every time we walk in the door to go to work, Safety and Security The three minor points: Headcount from escapes, Contraband from Inmates, Safety and Jail is not the place you want to be at any time. I do not enjoy going into work and seeing the same people there after they told me "I am getting my life together". Yeah, You were not. It is an easy job, you are the only one who can make it difficult for you. I want to help those get out of jail and never return it is my job as far as safety and security goes. I want to go over this in my essay because safety and security is very important in
New Life Prison is a private prison located in an unincorporated area of Brentwood, CA New Life prison is a dormitory setting and a minimum security prison for level one and two male inmate population of 500. New Life Prison is too focused on lowering the recidivism rate in CA. New Life prison is a new private prison and receives funding from grants and donations. New Life mission is to focus on the level one and two inmate’s within the state prison system. New Life mission is to help these individuals move on passed the crime they have committed and began to live their life again. In 2004 Folsom state prison was able to move their level one and two inmates to a minimum security facility (Department of Correction 2015). Most of these inmates
I personally know someone who is a correctional officer, and he told me about how stressful but rewarding his job is. My compeer told me that he has the chance to see people come into the facility with hardships and problems and then sees the same person leave with a whole new outlook, and their life turned around. To keep his code of ethics in tact, respect must be given to the inmates and he cannot utilize any form of discrimination. When people feel that respect is being given to them they tend to give it back, which would keep some piece in the Prison/Jail.
When looking at my time as a correctional security staff member for the first 17 years of my adult life, I can see some connections to between the penitentiary work environment to set the stage for fear of each person confined inside the fence at any time. I may get some bad feedback from my fellow students that work in other law enforcement areas of the criminal justice system, but correctional staff members are the only members of the criminal justice system that work hands-on in an environment with no protective gear other than the radio’s and keys that they are issues at the start of their shift and walk into a correctional housing unit to work alone with 30 to 100 criminal offenders every day (Farness, Bello, Livi, Barbieri, & Bubbiotti, 2016). When other law enforcement officers go on duty they usually have a wide array of weapons, both lethal and non-lethal, they are issued to attempt to protect themselves from violent members of society that they may come across during their shifts (Leino, Eskelinen, Summala, & Virtanen, 2011). When other law enforcement officers go on to duty they will know from working the stress what areas have high crime rates, high violence rates, and also what areas of town will be safer than other
According to bls.gov, Correctional officers are responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been sentenced to serve time in jail or prison. The correctional officer’s main focus is to keep the inmate safe and secure, meaning to keeping the inmate safe from hurting themselves and others and also from being injured from other predatory inmates. They have to be consistent in their discipline, if they aren’t they will find themselves really struggling with trying to survive in a day of work. Every day that they walk into work they have to have a positive state of mind and be consistent in there discipline.
"The most common rate is 90%, though some prisons are able to snag a 100% promise from their local governments" (Mathews 2). Contracts stating the minimum capacity rate of the prison between the government and private prisons exist for all private prisons, which seems sensible because how else would the company guarantee profits. However the quotas these contracts call for presents a problem because "[w]hile incarceration statistics have skyrocketed, crime rates have increased much more slowly" (Smith 3). A cause for the rise in jailed rates is the quota presented by the private prison industry. Private prisons seek not to reform prisoners, but to increase profits, and so these prisons run like businesses. The largest private prison corporation, Corrections Corporation of America, have uncomprependle
Prison systems are tough to work in because of the nature of the system as well as the history of some of the inmates. It is important for all individuals performing any duty with the prison to work as a cohesive team. All team members should feel safe and respected regardless or rank, seniority, gender, etc. When trust is broken among peers and management of those working in the Prison System, the system becomes broken and the purpose will not be served effectively. Individuals with Leadership positions should not use their authority to take advantage or misuse other employees. As well as education is used to empower and equip individuals to strive for a better life and a rich outlook on current circumstances, and anyone working with that goals nor anyone else should become a victim of Sexual
Correction officers, treatment staff, probation and parole officers all have similarities as well as differences. These professions all deal with individual who have broken the law. These professions all supervise offenders' activities, by keeping and watching over these offenders keeps the community safe and free if criminal behaviors. Although these professions are similar they also have differences. Correctional Officer are individuals who supervise, and control over inmates who are awaiting trial or sentenced to time in jail for breaking the law. When it comes to security level the facility is broken down into four levels. There is Super Max security also known as high security, which is where the worst of the worst inmates are supervised. The inmates have little to no contact with officers or other offenders. Maximum security is generally where inmates live in
258). The Warden 's main responsibilities are to care for the inmates of his or her prison by providing food, clothes, housing, medical care and treatment, discipline, job training, employment and rehabilitation (Gaines & Miller, 2017, p. 236). The Warden is also the individual responsible for evenly distributing the prison 's financial allowance and as such, could be considered to be the primary political power of the prison (Gaines & Miller, 2017, p. 236-237). Moving down the chain of command, the Captain 's primary job description is that of an administrator who deals one on one with the Warden (Gaines & Miller, 2017, p. 258). In addition, the Lieutenant 's main responsibilities in a prison are to police and transport the inmates (Gaines & Miller, 2017, p. 258). Sergeant 's are in charge of their individual squads; each squad will be assigned to designate parts of the prison such as cell blocks (Gaines & Miller, 2017, p. 258-259). Finally, the officers are the employees who hold the most amount of power when it comes to dealing with inmates. To better explain, there are varying forms of Officers, such as Block Officer, Work Detail Supervisor, Industrial Shop and School Officer, Yard Officer, and Tower Guard (Gaines & Miller,
Training is how employee’s learn about the job and they also learn with continuous training, but corrections have cut the budget in such a way that the training of officers have been shorten or don’t provide the necessary training in order to prepare them for all of the situations in which they will encounter, this will put their lives at risk. The administration and state legislature have traded the safety of it employees for saving money. In a study by Kelly Dial showed, “In sum how emotional dissonance, role conflict, task control and direct contact with inmates are linked to correctional job stress” (Dial.2010). When officers and administrations are educated and trained they are less likely to be stress and will be able to handle any situation they may be caught in. In this line of work it is important that the employees are well trained in the new techniques and the latest information so they will be greater informed than the inmates they are guarding. According to Gary Cornelius, “Training must be dynamic and should discuss issues that are extremely important to correctional Staff. Knowledge keeps us safe; knowledge keeps us skilled” (Cornelius.2012). By training officers, it will give them the knowledge to the best job they can because they have receive the appropriate training to handle
GED while incarcerated, but such opportunities depend on the availability of education programs and inmate eligibility for those programs” (Visher, Travis).
According to Alexander, so many black men are missing because they are under the criminal justice system. In today’s society, there has been a mass incarceration of black men due to the federal program called the war on drugs. Because of this mass incarceration, a lot of black men are far from home without being able to raise their children. “Hundreds of thousands of black men are unable to be good fathers for their children, not because of a lack of commitment or desire but because they are warehoused in prisons, locked in cages” (Alexander 738). African Americans were victims of slavery in the past; however, in today’s society the number of black men in prison is even bigger than the black men enslaved in the past. “More black men are imprisoned today than at any other moment in our nation’s history” (Alexander 740). The war on drugs makes this possible because
Every year the amount of individuals that are being incarcerated continue to escalate. Unfortunately, there are various reasons as to why this is. Our prison system is being exploited. Every building has its max capacity—its limits, and our federal and state penitentiaries are at their maximum limit. The prisons are starting to become so over crowded that it is becoming a serious hazard to not only the individuals that are being incarcerated, but also to the friends and families that are affected because of the prison system. That is why I have decided to help. However, in order to help alleviate this particular issue, I need to focus on the one concept that is the most influential when it comes to preventing
A major issue facing the prison system and society is the fact that prisons are not equipped to meet the needs of older prisoners and older prisoners are not adequately prepared to-renter society.
First and far most what is considered proper living conditions for a criminal. Yes, I believe they should have a sanitary establishment where they could sleep, eat, and shower, that is least we could provide for anyone. I do not think taking away privileges from any confinement facility will promote less repeat offenders. Instead of taking away we should be trying to help the individuals who can be rehabilitated, with programs that can teach them how stay on the right track, help them get a job, and provide for themselves. I know that everyone is not able to recover but if we gave those men and women who are willing to learn these tools then we would see less repeat offenders. Prison should not just be a place of confinement, it's where these
It came to my attention there are a lot of incidents of assaults on staff by inmates. There are a lot of safety concerns that the Human resource department have. A few of the guards has raised fear for their safety. Prison officials can’t do their job effectively if they are being hurt on the job. I recommend that the officers should carry something more than mace, to control combative inmates. I conduct a meeting with all of the prison guards, prison staff and the city Mayor Blasio about the unsafe working conditions ate the Department of Corrections. I am the investigation unit Department manager and I handle all of these
