One of pre America's darkest times was the atrocious Salem Witch trials, which took place in the 1690s, and 200 years later it became one of the best plays written by Arthur Miller. One of Arthur Miller's main point in his play The Crucible was self-sacrifice can define a person's life. By doing this in his play The Crucible, Arthur Miller develops a tragedy to develop his theme of unselfish. A tragedy in a play when there is an event causing great suffering. The theme of self-sacrifice, in the play goes with the tragedy of when John Proctor does not plead guilty to the charge of witchcraft. This is a tragedy because John Proctor is giving up his life so he wouldn't be the blame of his friends death and his kids could wouldn't be tormented
