Love is not only an affection and feeling one has within him or herself, but also something that requires one to go out of their comfort zone, and make decisions one might not like. A person with great knowledge of love is William Shakespeare, a poet and playwright. Most of his 37 plays and 154 sonnets are about this complex emotion--one of his most famous play about love is Romeo and Juliet. This tragedy, is about two “star-crossed lovers,” so desperate for wanting to be together, ultimately take their lives. Shakespeare's plays always try to convey a message like how love can make people do things that they most desire and do so by making sacrifices for each other. Many families make sacrifices in their lives for the ones they love. After the death of Romeo and Juliet, Prince was furious and devastated over the loss, and Lord Capulet asked his “brother Montague” to join hands with him for this is his “daughter’s” property that was meant for her but no longer hers (5.3299-302). Romeo and Juliet’s marriage is what was supposed to bring the families together, but their outmost love for each other led to both killing themselves. This consequence led to both families joining hands and bringing peace because the love for their sons and daughters made then saw they needed to be united. The article I chose to compare shows “a devoted father” jumping in front of a car to save “his disabled son” as they were walking down the street together. This father loves his son and did everything every day for his son. So as a sacrifice he had jumped to save his son's life. He died to give his son’s life and his daughter said even though this was a great tragedy for the family, the father did the right thing for his family. First Body Paragraph: Within the text of Romeo and Juliet, the text portrays the theme significantly in the display of sacrificing one's life for another. For example, within the text both the main characters abandon their family and style of living; this is portrayed by Romeo when he sacrifices and abandons his new found life in another town by trying to see Juliet. Juliet, within the novel, sacrifices her wealthy lifestyle and family to escape and live with Romeo. Juliet can only be with this character, however, if she sacrifices her state of living. Teacher and classmates, A few weeks ago, I questioned Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet wondering why, why is this literature still prominent in today's society? The foreign tongue it is written in, the seemingly basic and boring plot and the lack of action all combined being regarded as one of man’s greatest achievements didn't quite equate. However through my studies of the question, How effectively does Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet shape our notion of love, I realised. Throughout the text lies defining moments of romantic, fickle and fraternal love and the complexity of the text allows for both interpretation while maintaining relatability. However our perception of love, the strong feeling of affection, has differed immensely since 1595. Romeo and Juliet, a story over four centuries old is the foundation of love and romance throughout history.
Love, in 'Romeo and Juliet' has its own importance in the theme of inner struggle between the two protagonists, Romeo and Juliet. Juliet is torn between staying loyal to her family and therefore obeying her parents to marry Paris or staying married to an enemy, Romeo, “My husband lives, that Tybalt has slain; / And Tybalt's dad, that would have slain my husband: / All this is comfort; wherefore weep I then?” (3:2). On the other hand, Romeo has his struggles too. He juggles between the idea of banishment from Verona and not being able to see his beloved Juliet again and that of death, “Ha, banishment? Be merciful, say 'death'.” (3:3). The secret marriage between Romeo and Juliet is also one of the outcomes due to love. It is because of love that Juliet risked her parents' disapproval to not marry Paris and Romeo risked the danger of being killed by Capulet's kinsmen to go to see her. Yet again, this shows the inner struggle of Romeo and Juliet.

While others could debate that Romeo and Juliet’s love, was love at first sight, it is debateable that their feelings towards one another were pure lust. Romeo and Juliet are too immature to fully understand the concept of love as they are too young and hormone-driven, they were both in search for escapism from their present troubles, and they had an excessive amount of
