This song doesn't necessarily have a "purpose," per se, but it may be one of the songs we play for Golden Empire (our yearly Sacramento-Area concert band festival) in April. In order to be a respected band, as we are, we need to stretch ourselves and challenge ourselves to do more and to be better musicians. "Relentless" is most definitely teaching us to do that. It has an almost labyrinthine melody which flows through the sections with variations periodically, with other rhythms happening at the same time. I, and the rest of the band, as I am sure, have learned how to count (musically counting, not counting to ten) rhythms better and not to trust the patterns we have become accustomed to. In terms of "Relentless," that last statement
The second half of the first stanza introduces an extended metaphor describing the motivating factor of human nature, saying, “To conquer every mountain shown” (Keenan). While the word “conquer,” conjures up images of imperialistic warfare, within the context of this song the word has a broader meaning and may be more clearly understood as the “will to power and the will to meaning.” That is, the driving forces of human nature are achievement, which is motivated by personal ambition to reach the highest possible position we may accomplish, and the drive to understand the meaning of our lives. The word mountain represents every type of obstacle that might get in the way of that goal, while the word “I” directly refers to the singer and metaphorically refers to humanity as a collective of individuals motivated by personal self-interest. Taken together with the first half of this stanza, we see the idea that the defining characteristic of human nature is to overcome, or conquer, every obstacle that obstructs the will to power or prevents us from discovering truth. The singer then introduces the controlling metaphor (or main theme) of the song, which is transcendence saying, “But I’ve
Lucky Stiff is a musical that incorporates many fun, creative aspects of theatre. Throughout the show, there are many dances, songs, and great examples of acting. As usual, being backstage and being a part of the show has allowed me to see the show grow and develop into the finished product that it became. Positioned as the choreographer of the show, there were many parts during the creation of Lucky Stiff that I helped create. During this production, I discovered the true concept of competition within theatre, as I had never experienced such high competition before. In addition, I also encountered the hardships of creating a musical; I found out how much work goes into every musical and how to deal with it. Finally, I learned of the satisfaction
Inland Empire's blues-rock band, Zentonic, release their sophomore album "Reset" and push musical and personal boundaries. The IE's trio, Daniel Chavez (lead vocals/guitar), Ruben Cordova (bass/vocals), and Kenny Lopez (drums), surpass expectations along the road to "Reset" with their innovative sound, and return to basic elements, passion, and core ideals. Despite always possessing the musical and mechanical talent, as heard on "Set The Tone (2014)," the diversity and craft taken on "Reset" focuses on a louder display of passion, which echos Zentonic's true voice, and evolution from album to album. Unmatched fusion of sounds, that range from blues, rock, and funk, has led them to break away in pure adornment, and ultimately defines them as
During my junior year, all high school students of the Coachella Valley were given the opportunity to audition for the All Coachella Valley Honor Band, with a guest conductor H. Robert Reynolds. This was a significant educational opportunity I took advantage of. The audition consisted of a couple of scales, and excerpts from the music that was going to be performed on the day of the concert. When the day came I sat in front of the judge with my music and clarinet, where my nerves began to rise. Before I began to play my heart began to pound along with my hands beginning to sweat. Throughout my audition I had a few mistakes, but I stayed persistent and completed my audition. After I finished my audition, the judge said I had done great, I was
The Motley Crue is a heavy metal band, with carefree lifestyle, that they spread throughout the world through their music. The members of the band were not only memorable on the stage, but off stage as well. They lived a lifestyle most would not deem socially correct, though it seemed to benefit their career. Selling over 100 million albums worldwide, Motley Crue helped spread the heavy metal brand of music around the world. All of these factors contributed to making them one of the best selling bands of all time. Their style, their life outside of music, and the spread of their music has lead Motley Crue to the top of Rock and Roll.
Walking up and down the two rows of hornline and drumline members at our very first show whispering encouragements and fixing aussies, I watched the terror consume face as you and those around you were trying to focus on what was about to happen. After that 9 minute show bursting with chaos and confusion, I remember coming off the field with shaky knees and hearing all sorts of positive whispers and seeing your wide, excited eyes. At that moment, you gave me hope for this season.
The music and lyrics of the song simultaneously start, creating a feeling of hurriedness, and not leaving any time for the listener to think about the music and the feeling it creates on its own. This reflects the lifestyle teenage boys were thrown into upon the entrance of high school and their rushed, and somewhat forced, decision to join the Panther football team. Halfway through the song, the music becomes
In high school I was a part of the Northgate Marching Band Drumline. I auditioned my freshman year and was put on top bass. At the time the line was dominated by girls, so I felt very comfortable and made a lot of friends. During the winter season I auditioned for snare. In drumline, the snare drum is the most exposed drum, therefore it is reserved for the more advanced players. I was told to go home and work on some things, and so I did. I practiced for a few hours and the next day after practice I was told I was on snare. I marched snare from then on, freshman year all the way through my senior year. Although this was a main goal of mine, it was not my only goal in the drumline. In marching band we had roles called Section Leaders. A section
It is a sin for anyone to destroy, in a blink of an eye, what they have been working on for months or even years. Therefore, one should always face the hardships with a strong will, hold their head up high when facing an upcoming storm, because that is the only way they can survive the war that is life. Right towards the end of the song, there is an extremely empowering line that says “this road never looked so lonely, this house doesn’t burn down slowly to ashes” which stands as a reminder that right when the challenge becomes harder, one should never forget what they are fighting for and simply give up. The amount of determination reflected in this line is the reason why I listen to this song whenever I feel defeated by the obstacles. It comes to spark the flame of determination in my heart when I consider backing
The country music group Exile had many changes in line-up during its first sixteen years, including the loss of their lead singer Jimmy Stokley around the release of their album All There Is. Despite this, the group managed to assess their abilities and turn Exile into a new and arguably more successful group as they went on in their career. This group proves that there’s a way to get around every obstacle, because they are still playing even now, 53 years after their original debut.
Books, movies, paintings, music, and other types of art are connected in various ways, but one connection seems to stand out. All art mediums are constructed in a way that disallows a median to be reached regarding one’s opinion from another. If a group of people favors one thing, another group most likely exists that has the opposite, or conflicting opinion. 2112, read Twenty-one twelve, is a 7-part conceptual album by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush, illustrates this conflict in its main plot. Regardless of its vivid storytelling and impactful instrumentals that glues everything together, it is evident that each listener will break apart in terms of their personal opinions.
The song 'Non-Stop' showcases the characters' determination to leave a lasting legacy and make a mark on history. The line 'I wanna build something that's gonna outlive me' highlights the drive for upward mobility and the desire to create a lasting
The song has an irregular rhyme scheme but still, holds a musical effect. It doesn’t take away from the song but adds depth to it allowing you to see that what's important are the words and the meaning behind them not how pretty it would sound. The rhythm allows for the tone to shine through as with certain parts, it takes a longer time to read and the other times it is much faster. The pace changes with the moods.
Despite their failure to convert them religiously through music, the natives were left with a Spanish influence because even after secularization they continued to use European instruments such as: “Violins, violas,” and "guitars” (Ray and Engbeck 1974:16) and most stopped using native instruments. Because of this neglect, there only remains fragmentary evidence--outside of a few early ethnographies and written descriptions of events in the California missions--on native music, while “several hundred European-style musical instruments were being played in California.” (Ray and Engbeck 1974:15)
“Clocks” by Coldplay addresses the topic of purpose. The song begins as the main character is pleading for help when he has been knocked down on his knees. He talks about every word gone unsaid in his life and every missed opportunity. Then he explains his thoughts on the world, feeling like everyone is just waiting for him to take action. In the end, he realizes his sense of purpose in life and uses this uncertainty to his advantage. “Clocks” carries a theme that although purpose may be hard to figure out with pressure and uncertainty, life’s purpose will always come in the end. In the first verse, the song says, “A tiger’s waiting to be tamed singing” (Coldplay 8). Coldplay is referring to the urgency of the situation. He feels the world
