The goal of the Sacramento State Police Department is “ to ensure that you are on one of the safest campuses in the CSU system” said by Sac State Chief of Police, Mark M. Iwasa. With the amount of incidents increasing more and more on college campuses, Michelle Cowee is taking her safety into her own hands. “I come from a small town near Redding, so Sacramento is definitely a whole new environment for me. I just don’t feel as safe as I feel like I should be.” The third year, who insists on carrying a taser every day, also walks along the American River bike trail where a student was assaulted just two months ago. “Do you know how freaky it is knowing that girl could’ve been me? That attack happened in broad daylight.” Cowee, who has formed a self-defense group with her friends encourages more girls to be aware of their surroundings, “You have to realize that you’re on a big campus — so big that something terrible can happen in just the blink of an eye. You need to be careful.” Whether the campus is big or small, less and less students seem keen on walking around at night.
