The job market today is difficult for both employees and employers. It hurts emotionally and financially to lose a job, and it is equally painful to have to terminate someone. Both sides struggle. If you work for an organization that may be facing layoffs, being prepared helps. Below are some tips Begin by praying -- and often. Ask God to help you maintain a positive attitude and to keep your mind from flooding with negative, fearful possibilities. Do not allow your mind to play the theme of my family will go hungry. My spouse and kids will leave me. I will never find another job that I like. I will end up homeless, alone, and living on the streets. Such thinking reflects a failing of relying on the Lord. People who were hired by a referral were twice as likely to be hired as compared to people responding to newspaper ads and more than five times as likely to be hired as those walking into a business and asking for a job. Increasing your contacts is essential. The best job finding technique is still personal connections. That is, unless you are hoping to spotted by a recruiter. Business Week reports that 87% of recruiters use the on-line social networks for spotting candidates for jobs they represent. Pursuing jobs that match the skills you enjoy using will more ensure you like your new position. Most skills can be applied in multiple tasks. For example, I taught school, did management training for a corporation, consulted with a retail chain designing a Human Resource Department, and provided seminars for the public. Basically, all required very similar skills. One of my students used the same skills working as a dental assistant as she did selling jewelry. She was able to show a potential employer how her persuasion of others was a required strength in both prior jobs and how his opening would let her to do what she enjoyed most. Ask someone to read each of your resumes. Do not depend on spell check for finding errors. Read them aloud. Don’t let your resume be trashed for poor spelling or formatting that is difficult to read. Remember that using bullets creates an easier
The Worst Hard Times by Timothy Egan conveys the story of farmers who decided to prosper on the plains during the 1800s, in places such as Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. They decided to make living, and some stayed during the worst droughts in the United States in 1930s. High temperatures and dust storms destroyed the area, killing animals and humans. This competently book reveals the prosperity for many, later revealing the time of the skinny cows. The story is based on the testimonies of the survivors or through their diaries/journals and on historical research. The author describes the struggles of the nesters, in which Egan clearly blames these catastrophic events on the settler’s hubris.
“These days I live in three worlds: my dreams, and the experiences of my new life, which trigger memories from the past." Trying new jobs you don't enjoy will cause you to dream of what you’d rather be doing, and this will lead you to find a passion. The tricky part is pursuing your passion and following up on it. Putting yourself out there and taking new opportunities will expand your horizon. Finding your passion and calling takes time, it won’t happen overnight. As long as you are constantly active in what you feel is your passion; sooner or later you’ll find your calling and all it has to
How I came to choose which career path better suites me is through figuring out which of the daily tasks and environments I would like to pursue as a career. Each job is particularly
Reviewing the samples resumes was tedious, because while there was differences between the resumes, majority of the resumes read the same. I can conclude that I do not want to be a job recruiter because after the fifth resume, I was about done. Though there weren’t spelling errors that I noticed, there was a lot of grammar errors. According to the Recruiters’ Top 10 Resume Pet Peeves, by Norma Gaffin, pet peeve number 1 was spelling errors, typos and poor grammar. Reading the resumes made sure that I go back and double check mine, because a person’s resume is basically an advertisement of a person’s qualities. Many job recruiters receive numerous resumes every day, and in order for someone to compete, the persons resume needs to stand out. Basically, job seekers send in a resume that highlights the products or skills that they are trying to sell to the recruiter. If the product is the same as everyone else, job recruiters would not want to buy in your product.
I have been having some difficulty writing my resume and i have stared over many times and it seems that I have not been getting anywhere. I wrote a draft resume and brought to my SFL-TAP counciler and she pretty
Mass lay-offs could potentially allow for the maintaining of the current wages but for fewer workers. When dealing with lay-offs opens up a whole new slew of problems including, how to select the people who get laid off, and those who get laid off lose their livelihood.
I work in community mental health and have for the past nine years, we are a non-profit, and I am always amazed how that changes the way we operate. As a non-profit we always have to be fiscally conscious. Recently, we lost a large contract that we held with the county and had to lay off 20 employees. We did not employ the last one hired first one fired approach. Everyone who worked in the department was laid off, including my former boss who has worked for the agency for over 10 years and was employee of the year two years ago. While we laid off the entire department, each staff had the opportunity to interview for other departments that had positions available. As a business we will try to absorb the best staff first.
Resume 1 needs to improve in the uniformity of the font style, the education section, the overall grammar, and the relevance of the skills and interests. On the other hand, Lucia excel in the clarity of separating her titles and topics throughout by either bolding or underlining. Also, the spacing of each section was excellent except for the section that was labeled Fine Sports Wear International, Two Ville, CA. In addition, the contact information was professional and stood out successfully, but the readability of the font style was low.
Helping employees cope with stress is not an easy task. In this situation, we have a group whose teamwork is breaking down because of insecurity of layoffs. Initially this stress has increased workloads, but in the long run, these disruptions can cause productivity to decrease. This is where knowing your employees will help you employ emotion-focused coping strategies in order to pull the team together.
The Generation Jobless documentary has enlightened me on how bad the after graduation unemployment situation is in Canada. There are more cons than there are pros in the unemployment situation. Some of the positive parts of the graduation unemployment are, the places that help graduates finds jobs, that they graduated with a degree in something, and that they put themselves up higher on the education ladder. Just a few of the cons are underemployment, pointless debt because graduates can’t find jobs in their fields, server jobs are the only jobs graduates can find, and graduates are let go faster than others that have more experience. I feel that Canada needs to do something fast about this issue because they have one of the highest unemployment rates for graduates in OECD countries. There are very few pros in the unemployment situation in Canada.
Now that the definition of recruitment is clear it time to explore the different strategies that are used in the recruitment process. Kevin Ryan, successful CEO of Guilt Goupe, states, “Recruiting is so important that we intentionally overinvest in it” (Ryan, 2012, p.45). This statement shows how important recruitment is. Being a recent college graduate that landed a job fresh out of college within my field and now seeking work, I can say first hand that the recruitment process is not done in one certain way, but in a variety of ways. One of the most common ways to get recruited is by referral. Referrals take place when current workers of an organization inform their associates about job openings and recommend they apply. In certain instances, when there is an extreme
Staff cutbacks can leave the surviving employees feeling demoralized, bitter, angry, and in shock. One role of Human Resource Management is to act as an employee advocate. In a time of workforce reduction, communicating with employees as well
Neglecting to fix any issues in your resume or letters can cost you when it comes to getting a job interview at a new job. When it comes to grammar in career success the employers seek for professionalism, and proficiency. There’s many people wanting to get that job, so you have to make sure your resume or letter is the one that stands out the most by the professionalism used in your work. No employer would want to hire someone with poor grammar, and isn’t professional whatsoever when it comes to the job. Having poor grammar can be an issue when trying to advance in a
The belief that work is morally good is the definition of work ethic provided by The American Heritage Dictionary. Work can mean different things to different people. Usually, when we first think of a word and its meaning, we look at its definition. When defining what is morally good, one must remain open to past societal meanings of what was considered moral. Work ethic has developed and changed through different cultures over centuries. Historians and philosophers have developed great insights and theories pertaining specifically to the meaning of work ethic and its meaningfulness in today's modern employment, while some have praised it and some have cursed it. Which leads us to the question, do workers today have a calling or
You can 't get to a job interview without reliable transportation. It makes sense for a family to always own at least one vehicle outright. 6) An Interview Suit - If a layoff rocks your world, the last thing you 'll want to do is shop for clothes using your dwindling severance pay. Gentlemen, get your interview suit, shirt, shoes, socks, and tie in order now. 7) An Updated Resume - This is a good time to quietly update your resume. Have some friends and relatives review it and check for misspellings and typos. There is nothing worse than sending out a flawed resume to dozens of employers. 8) An Backup Profession - If your job function was suddenly moved to a third world country where everyone apparently has five years of experience in your profession, what is your Plan B? It might be worthwhile to think of and lay the groundwork for alternative professions now rather than in the middle of a personal crisis. 9) A Training Plan - This economic downturn is a great time to skill up for the challenges ahead. When you take on new training, be wary of scams and look for something that will provide a verifiable return on your investment. 10) A Political Strategy - If your livelihood is being threatened by foreign competition, mass immigration, or Wall Street greed, you must make your views known to your political representatives. Instead of going quietly, go to Congress.org and lobby your elected officials.
