Sergeant First Class Jackson was a very humble warrior. In his cubical, you would find American Flags, Daily Bread pamphlets from the chaplain, maintenance magazines and a candy dish which we all loved. He never boasted about his accomplishments, but you knew there was something special about this gentle giant. As he and I talked prior to him undergoing surgery, he told me that he was assigned to the 507th Maintenance Company during his assignment to Fort Bliss, Texas. This company stood out in my mind because it was the infamous Maintenance Company which Private Jessica Lynch was assigned to when she became a prisoner of war. Staff Sergeant Jackson was the responsible for the maintenance of the fleet of vehicles that were partaking in the in the convoy. The convoy departed Kuwait, led by the Company Commander, Captain Troy K. King, en route to Iraq on the first day of the war in 2003. When many of the vehicles had become bogged down by the sand (Michael Luo 2003), Staff Sergeant Jackson moved forward to execute his functions and keep the convoy moving. The convoy became disoriented and was immediately surrounded by the enemy in Nasiriyah, Iraq. Staff Sergeant Jackson immediately began to return fire to help defend the convoy and protect his fellow Soldiers (Jackson 2014). He continued to fire until he was wounded and unable to fire his weapon. During the fog of war, Staff Sergeant Jackson transitioned from firing his weapon to

For this year’s event, we have decided to incorporate a Honor Guard and will hold the memorial ceremony in the OB2 Auditorium (DSHS Building adjacent to the HQ Transportation Building). The Honor Guard will participate in the Worker Memorial by lining the steps and walkway from the HQ Transportation Building to the OB2 Auditorium. It is expected that the attire for each member of the Honor Guard would be consistent with what is worn in the field (i.e. vests, raincoat, hardhat, boots, etc.). In regards to program specifics, the Honor Guard will be in place no later than 9:45 AM. At that time, the families of fallen workers will be escorted from the Transportation Building to the OB2 Auditorium and pass through the ranks of the Honor Guard. The Honor Guard will fall in behind the families as they pass and then be seated behind the families in the Auditorium. Once all are seated, the Worker Memorial program will commence.

1. I have served as Lance Corporal Sanchez’s Commanding Officer for ten months and throughout my tenure, this Marine has impressed me. Because of this Marine’s drive, leadership and technical proficiency, he was hand selected to serve as howitzer section chief in support of artillery platoon Black Sea Rotational Force 16.2. Unfortunately, and to the detriment to the platoon, he was removed from the deployment because of a driving under the influence non-judicial punishment that this recommendation will address and hopefully rectify. Currently, Lance Corporal Sanchez serves as gunner, howitzer section number 3; a position normally reserved for senior Corporals. As howitzer gunner, Lance Corporal Sanchez has assisted in the supervision of
