Rumble Fish is focused around young boys idolizing the gangs that use to be very prominent in the town they live in. One of the boys Rusty-James values the lifestyle of gangs members much more than his other friends. That is because he wants to be just like his older brother the Motorcycle Boy. The Motorcycle was the leader of a former gang. The Motorcycle Boy intrigued by the Siamese fighting fish. The young boys are described as the fighting fish known as Rumble Fish. The Motorcycle Boy quotes, “Siamese fighting fish. They try to kill each other. If you leaned a mirror against the bowl thed kill themselves fighting their own reflection” (Hinton 123). This quote represents the boys because of the gang situation. Both groups of boys intensely
“Things are rough all over.” - S.E Hinton quoted in her book “The Outsiders”. “Rumble Fish” and “The Outsiders” are both very similar books. Although there are many differences. Some major differences between the main characters, Rusty-James and Ponyboy, are love, strength, and confidence.
Darrell Mercer was forced to leave his home in Philadelphia to move all the way to California to live with his uncle against his will. He will have to go to a new school, to make new friends, and to have new teachers. Darrell will have to watch out for Tyray and Rodney the bullies of the school. It will be a hard time in his Junior years.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a novel about two neighborhoods separated because of classes in society. In these two neighborhoods, teenagers are separated into two different gangs, the lower-class Greasers and the upper-class Socs. Ponyboy, a greaser comes from a hard life. His parents died and he is left being raised by his older brother Darry. After both his brothers failed at accomplishing their dreams in life, Pony is left feeling like he will only be a greaser. Throughout the novel, Ponyboy realizes he has many traits making him have an outstanding future, such as his intelligence instincts and heroic skills.
“Maybe there is a beast… maybe it's only us,.” said William Golding, Lord of the Flies. When a symbol is examined, many conclusions can be drawn by relating the symbol to society and real life. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, even though the beast does represent something one can hurt or kill, as a symbol it represents a larger concept or idea because it brings out the beast-like personalities of the boys on the island, illustrates Jack’s dominant personality, and portrays the personalities inside all of us which humans can never defeat.
Hammond states this to Dr. Wu in the chapter, Bungalow. In this quote Hammond refuses to face the reality of how unsafe his park is, even though countless amount of evidence is set in front him. Not to mention he also refuses to believe that the dinosaurs have found a way to breed despite of the scientists’ precautions. Between his stubbornness and old age we observe that Hammond is actually out of his mind. Later on, after the island is in pieces and most of the staff is dead, Hammond still believes that he still/should build another Jurassic Park. Though in the beginning the novel vilified Nerdy, Hammond emerges as the real villain of the story with his abuse of the scientific power. This quote helps you understand who the real protagonist and real antagonist are. Nerdy was just a pod in the author’s game, to figure whose fault is. (Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. Chapter Bungalow)
It takes a big act of courage in a lot of sticky situations. In “Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry” by Mildred D. Taylor I believe Stacey Logan followed his convictions the most out of any character when he made the plan to stop the bus, helped TJ after he was beat up and framed by the Simms boys, and taking the blame when TJ cheated on the test. Stacey was a 12-year-old boy who is loyal throughout the entire book. Stacey knew that there would be many consequences for the things he did.
In the novel “rumble fish” by S.E.Hinton, rusty James is a tough teenager but at the same time he is an emotional wreck. James is a high school boy who is in a gang and likes to get into fights. He loves to fight it makes him feel tougher, he says “I feel so good. I Love fights. I love how I feel before a fight kind of high like I can do anything” (Hinton 18). James is a fighter at the young age of fourteen years old, he looks up to his brother to become tougher and a leader that everyone respects. Moreover, even though it looks like James is a tough kid by his actions, he masks the insecurities and vulnerability just beneath the surface. James develops the fear of being alone when his father leaves him 3 days and forgets about him at the
S.E. Hinton wrote the novel Rumble Fish to focus on the main protagonist, Rusty-James, living a rough childhood in a small town. While focusing mostly on him, she also dives deep into his best friend Steve. Rusty and Steve have an interesting relationship which brings out the positives and negatives in one another. Steve is the complete opposite of Rusty, yet the two are closer than ever.
I chose this quote not only because the main character Brewster said it, but because I believe it was an effective way to show the depth of his role. Moreover, the pace at which the author introduces these articulate characters makes it even more enjoyable.
One should not be someone they are not and you should always be yourself. Similarly, in “On The Bridge” by Todd Strasser, the character Seth starts off trying to be a tough guy like his friend Adam, but soon realizes to not pretend to be someone he isn’t. At first Seth tries doing things like his friend, Adam because he thought he was “cool”. However, once he was let down by Adam when he was beat up by a group of guys and Adam didn’t even put up a fight for Seth, his friend. After that experience that made Seth think a lot differently about Adam because he thought he was a tough guy but in reality he’s really a wuss. Although, Seth originally believed that Adam was a tough guy because he smokes and fought older and bigger kids, once Seth experienced being blamed for throwing a used cigarette onto a car on the highway, Seth learned one should not pretend to be someone they aren't that being a tough guy wasn’t all that and one should not pretend to be someone they aren’t.
In the beginning of the year Doug Swieteck was a childish bully and a pest. Toward the middle of the book he starts to learn from his mistakes and makes up for it by standing up to and for others. Now that we are at the end of the book, by now Doug hasn't changed any, so you could say he stayed quite the same from the middle of the book to the end.
Jackie Craig is seen as nice character in the book “Whale Talk”, but something about him is that he doesn’t speak, you may get a word here or there. He is seen as a minor character. Jackie is seen as being a loyal teammate to the team. For Jackie Craig a physical description is easy. He would blend in with everyone because of his plain characteristics.
In the book Seabiscuit an American Legend written by Laura Hillenbrand in the year 2001, is about a horse and jockey that no one thought that could win but they end up proving those who doubted them wrong. Throughout the book the author teaches us some very important lessons. For example, she teaches us how you don’t need a lot of money and other fancy things to be happy. Laura also teaches us how you can start at the bottom of the pyramid and work way up to the top if you believe in yourself. Seabiscuit also was a horse that no one believed in at all but this one jockey thought he had the heart to be a winner.
As a child, I vividly remembering watching the movie, “It”. I remember this insignificant event clearly for one reason. It kept me up for days because I was so terrified by the film. “It” was originally a horror novel written by Steven King but was also released into a movie. Every great horror movie has a villain or monster and the monster in “It” goes by the name pennywise the clown. Pennywise the Clown induces fear in me and millions of others because his traits closely resemble those of Cohen’s seven thesis which define what make a monster.
Pi kills a fish for the first time and that experience has changed him. At first, Pi was upset about his actions but sees that one must do what they must to survive. Pi desperately will do whatever is needed in order to survive even if that means doing things he never imagined himself doing.
