"The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare and the movie "Rudy" directed by David Anspaugh share the theme of individual desired versus society's norms. This narrative will explain what the two have in common, and why the theme is still around today. "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet" has the theme of individual desires versus society's norms. Romeo and Juliet do not have a big wedding celebration, although they come from wealthy families. This is breaking society's norm of wealthy family's having a big wedding ceremony, versus Romeo and Juliet having a very small one. Another example of Romeo and Juliet breaking society's norms would be the fact they got married without parents consent. During that time the parents would usually choose a man that they thought was good for their daughter. Let alone the fact that their family's hated each other's guts. Rudy wants to play football at Norte Dame, but he is way to small to play at a high level. This ties back to Rudy's desire to play football, although the norm is that you need to be large and tall to play at a high level. Rudy also did not have the money to get in to a prestigious school like Notre Dame without a scholarship. The only way he was able to get in was at the compasion of the head preist. He had a desire to go to Notre Dame versus Notre Dames norm of needing to be from a family of wealth or have a scholarship to get in. Grades were also an issue for Rudy. He made below average grades that were nowhere near the standard of Notre Dame. But he still got in despite that. He made a deal with the Priest to go to Holy Cross for two years, and if his grades were good he would be a student at Notre Dame. This was Rudys individual desire to go to school at Notre Dame versus Notre Dame norms of needing to have outstanding grades to get in that
