"The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare and the movie "Rudy" directed by David Anspaugh share the theme of individual desired versus society's norms. This narrative will explain what the two have in common, and why the theme is still around today. "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet" has the theme of individual desires versus society's norms. Romeo and Juliet do not have a big wedding celebration, although they come from wealthy families. This is breaking society's norm of wealthy family's having a big wedding ceremony, versus Romeo and Juliet having a very small one. Another example of Romeo and Juliet breaking society's norms would be the fact they got married without parents consent. During that time the parents would usually choose a man that they thought was good for their daughter. Let alone the fact that their family's hated each other's guts. There was never much true love in an arranged marriage. …show more content…
Rudy wants to play football at Norte Dame, but he is way to small to play at a high level. This ties back to Rudy's desire to play football, although the norm is that you need to be large and tall to play at a high level. Rudy also did not have the money to get in to a prestigious school like Notre Dame without a scholarship. The only way he was able to get in was at the compasion of the head preist. He had a desire to go to Notre Dame versus Notre Dames norm of needing to be from a family of wealth or have a scholarship to get in. Grades were also an issue for Rudy. He made below average grades that were nowhere near the standard of Notre Dame. But he still got in despite that. He made a deal with the Priest to go to Holy Cross for two years, and if his grades were good he would be a student at Notre Dame. This was Rudys individual desire to go to school at Notre Dame versus Notre Dame norms of needing to have outstanding grades to get in that

Rudy was determined to live out his childhood dream of playing football for Norte Dame and nothing was going to stop him. Family, friends, and educational institutions put down Rudy for believing me himself. This was because in the people's opinion Rudy was too small, dumb, and poor to attend Norte Dame and
Romeo and Juliet is a prime example of what "going against traditions" is. It is made know throughout the book that montagues and capulets are not to have any kind of relations. Disregarding this fact, Romeo (a montague) and Juliet (a capulet) fall in love. They struggle throughout the play, to end with their deaths. Shakespeare constantly appeals to the reader's emotions through Romeo and Juliet's character. He wants the readers to be have the attitude that the two should be together so he starts them in situations that we can relate to. For example, not everyone has experienced this but Romeo starts with a broken heart, longing for love. Juliet on the other hand experiences the peer pressure of everyone telling/getting her to marry someone
that is why is was acceptable for Juliet to marry at only 13. It was
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story about two young lovers who are forced to be estranged as a result of their feuding families. The play is about their struggle to contravene fate and create a future together. As such, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would try and emulate Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is

The play has been reinterpreted throughout time and Baz Luhrmann’s film version, William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, uses a modern setting to tell the tale. Romeo immediately marries Juliet after not that long of knowing each other. They get want to get married after one encounter of meeting and seeing each other cause they think they are meant for each other. And because they get married they have to keep their marriage secret because their families don't get along and wouldn't let them get married. Romeo making this decision to marry Juliet without really thinking about it changes the plot of the play
Throughout the play, both Romeo and Juliet are seen opposing the common faiths and patriarchy of Italy’s 16th century society. [ADD ‘ELABORATE’ STEP]. This is particularly evident after Juliet’s first meeting with Romeo, when he sneaks into the Capulet’s Orchid. Explicitly demonstrated in Act 2, Juliet rebels against a higher authority, her parents, by proposing a clandestine marriage with the supposed enemy, “If that thy bent of love be honourable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow.” (2.144-145). In this scene, Juliet is resisting the typical beliefs related to the women of that time, and assuming a dominant role by being the first to purpose marriage (is usually performed by males). Not only that, but by not consulting her parents,
William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet is a traumatic love story between young adults Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet come from different families who have been feuding for years, the Capulets and the Montagues. Abandoning the indifferences between their families they go against it all, fall in love, and marry in secret. Little do they know their love story will result in a tragic ending, death. William Shakespeare writes this play set in Verona, Italy and to him this place is thought of as a timeless fantasy land. Even though Shakespeare sets the play in Verona the characters do not act the way people from there acted and their beliefs and customs were not the same. The way the families act and treat others in based more on
Therefore the expectations made by the two families was why Romeo and Juliet had to lie and fabricate situations to their parents. Romeo and Juliet rebelling against everyone shows the audience that they are growing up and making decisions for themselves.
Although, society has developed since Romeo and Juliet’s time, the universal element of teenagers versus the social institution of family is still the same. Much like Romeo and Juliet, teenagers, who believe parents are overbearing and controlling, wish they could break away from parents’ expectations. Parents, like the Capulets, believe their job, essentially, is to limit their children from negative influences and lead them on successful paths, exampling Capulet’s wish for Juliet to marry Paris.
Romeo and Juliet is about two young teenagers who fall into forbidden love. When they fall in love, they're families start war and they end up getting isolated and turned against each other. The two sides (Montague and Capulet) are constantly fighting because of something that happened long ago that they cant even remember. This is symbolic for society and moral value. It is like
Juliet trangessal from social norms influences Romeo’s to both defy the feud and Elizabethan society's expectation of love. In the beginning Romeo complies to the structure of courtly love as seen through his overly dramatic, elaborate, affected phrasing but no real love directed towards Rosalind. Juliet’s rejects the maidens role to be coy and difficult in courting and instead asks for the sincerity of his love and for him to “take all myself”. By valuing real emotions over the idea of love, she influences Romeo’s change in language to more sincere and poetic. By asking Romeo to “purpose marriage” Juliet transgresses the social norm of the male proposing the
Shakespeare's famous play of the two star crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet arouses many debates in the literary world; among them belongs the question of who Shakespeare portrays as the culprit responsible for the couples death: foolish young love, societal norms and customs or simply fate? The plot of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare unfolds in Verona, where the protagonists, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, each belong to powerful feuding Verona families. Juliet, who is only 14 years of age, has been promised by her father to a man named Paris without her consent, as was common for women at the time. In Verona, expectations and societal norms for men and women diverge. Men are portrayed as sexual, violent, strong characters who fight for honor while women are portrayed as inferior, weaker and represent possessions and conquests of men. Although, Juliet does not conform to these expectations and defies them throughout the play by her actions and behavior until she meets a tragic and untimely death with her lover Romeo. William Shakespeare uses Juliet, an unconventional protagonist compared to the society’s gender roles, and her tragic downfall to criticize the patriarchal society he lived in during the Elizabethan era.
