The scene I choses is the scene where Roy smashes the clock tower. Light has a very strong effect on this scene. Before Roy goes up to pitch he had struck out and that had him down. While he was getting ready he was in the shadows to demonstrate that he was feeling down and probably little lost of hope. Right when he is about to pitch, he gets out of the shadows and he is illuminated and the hopes are up. When the Iris is illuminated we know that something good is going to happen. When they us light it is a sign that something really good is going to happen. Iris looks like she has hope and also gives hope to Roy. Both times when they first show the clock it is dark. The background seems dark as if time were something bad. But when the clock
Lighting is used as a major technique in this film as it is often used to set the mood. Due to Vidal’s world always being shown enveloped in blue-grey hue, it immediately shows the viewers that is isn’t a welcoming place to be. This shade of lighting helps create a detached feeling which is in great contrast to the golden, homely, and warm lighting of Ofelia’s fantasy world portraying a safe and enchanting atmosphere.
The movie I chose to do my scene analysis on is Do the Right Thing. The scene I chose in the movie is the scene of the 20 “D” Batteries. The scene of the 20 “D” Batteries reflects the movie and the scene because it betrays the ethnic and racial tensions between each race and the cross-cultural communication between them. Throughout the movie the filmmaker Spike Lee uses wide variety of angles but in this scene he uses high angle and low angle. The character Radio Raheem is walking down the sidewalk listening to “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy on his Boom box, the director Spike Lee uses a low angle to make Radio Raheem seem as if he is powerful. In contrast when Radio Raheem walks into the store we see the little Asian boy
What atmosphere or mood does the setting create (for example, darkness may create a mood of fear or unhappiness while light or bright colors may create one of happiness)?
Lewis uses lighting to dramatize the opening scene of the film and characterize the protagonist of the story. The most noticeable utilization of film noir lighting is in the beginning
The lighting in the Royal Court Theatre was used to depict suspense. At the beginning when Hero was deciding to go to war or stay home, the lights became brighter and brighter. This resembled the time leading up to the decision he had to make in
The image is brighter and sharper in the film. The contrast of the film really affects the mood. Since the contrast is so bright the viewer is bound to stay focused and aware because everything is so catchy and noticeable. Also, the exposure changes throughout the film. At the very beginning the film starts in black and white and changed to color as the story progressed. The filmmaker uses a lot of Long Takes, each shot of Dorothy meeting someone new is pretty lengthy.
Throughout the play, it was amazing how they used the lights to transition when tragic events occurred in play like a cliffhanger. In part three, when Shane confesses about the wrong deeds Kippy did, the light shines only at Darren and Kippy to make the event look serious; which made event suspenseful for the audience to capture their attention.

When looking into the lighting presented within the film, The third man, one can say that the lighting aspect is what makes the important things within different scenes of the film stand out. For instance in the scene where Holly found out Harry was still alive, where Orson Welles made his first appearance, the lighting aspect added to that of the movies tone. All that was visible was that of Harry’s shoes, until the lighting of a passing car shined over the face of Harry Lime, in revelation that he was in fact alive. The lighting aspect brought this scene to life, with the perfect play of lighting to show who was lurking in the shadows. In an article in which I came across on, Senses of cinema on the third man, it stated how, “The use of low-key
Explain how the artists utilize lighting in the scene. How does the lighting affect our emotional understanding of certain characters? What sort of mood does the lighting evoke? How does lighting impact the overall story the filmmaker is attempting to tell? Describe the setting, including the time period, location, and culture in which the film takes place.
The most important scene in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is when Ivan keeps on working to finish as much as he can before the work day is over, this is important because it shows his leadership and dedication. Ivan displays his leadership in this scene by inspiring his squad members to push through and finish the day on a positive note. Solzhenitsyn illustrates this when Ivan says, ““Don’t let me down, brothers,”” (Solzhenitsyn 85). This scene is also important because it shows more of Ivan’s character of being dedicated.
Lighting as we know, creates the atmosphere for the setting, it establishes the overall tone for what the audience sees. Lighting is key in filming, as it can change tones from scene to scene to create a certain subliminal meaning. For instance the contrasting light from character to character to allow the viewer to understand the differences. Throughout the movie “The Dark Knight” we are able to see how the lighting allows for the directors subliminal meaning to seek through; darkness within. As the name of the movie suggests “Dark Knight” the movies overall tone is set in the darkness. This dark atmosphere allows for an eerie feeling, tension to build up and an anxiety feeling for the viewer. To understand the underlining meaning behind the lighting choices within the film, it 'll be shown by the protagonist, antagonist and the overall atmosphere within the movie.
Cuarón has used many different criteria of mise-en-scene to help viewers see his message, and the use of lighting in this scene was no exception. The way the director uses the lighting in the miracle cease fire scene portrays different emotions and sends the message that things will end up okay. Light is a know symbol for hope, and the way the Alfonso uses lighting at the start of the scene and at the building itself shows that it is a gloomy and hazardous place due to the war and violence happening. However, as the scene progress at 0:14 the lighting is on Theo and Kee carrying the baby, it also lights up when all the other occupants of the building are looking at the child as it is a ray of hope during all the hard times the people are having. Another example of when the lighting is used to emphasize the hope in the new born child is at 1:15 as the lighting from the window above is focused on Theo and Kee again as all the soldiers come in a stop to see the child. Even in the mast of war and death people are stopping to see the baby as it gives hope for a new beginning, so there will be a meaning to the lives of the people. Besides lighting, Caurón also uses different camera angles to help portray his idea of hope in the movie.

When a person watches a movie, and a scene with dim lighting shows up on the screen, that usually makes them feel tense and scared about what is going to happen next. Directors use cinematic techniques to convey feelings or connect with the viewer. In the movies Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton uses flashbacks, diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, and high key and low key lighting to show a characters’ thoughts or past, create the mood of a scene, create suspense, and let the viewers know about the characters’ as if they personally knew each other.
