1. What are the root causes of the migrant crisis? Where are migrants coming from? Why are they attempting to cross the Mediterranean illegally?
A lot of migrants are coming to Greece and Italy from vulnerable areas like Syria. There are many individuals were internally displaced because of the Syrian Conflict. The migrant crisis is testing European values from the freedom of movement inside territories and from protection. There is a big number of people who risk their lives through ocean and land routes to enter Europe without having a visa. Since the 1980s’s there have been people who have illegally attempted to cross the Mediterranean. One of the main reasons for attempting to cross illegally is was because of the visa requirements that were forced on third country individuals because of the Economic crisis in Europe in the 1970’s. From 1970 all the way until 2013 there were thousands that crossed and in 2014 the number went up to 200,000 and in 2015 there were over one million. The migratory routes changed from the central Mediterranean which was high at risk to the Eastern Mediterranean which was low at risk. Migratory routes have changed because geography has changed in conflicts that happened in Syria, Libya, Iraq and Africa. They have also changed because there is a lot of state control in countries like Morocco and Spain. Later in 2014 the route was closed by police forces and it was bypassed by a more lengthy and dangerous route. Those are the reasons for why The
Shawn Pogatchnik shows how important the fact that so many migrants are trying to flee to Germany and other EU countries by using statistics. Pogatchnik states that the EU countries “...has seen more than 332,000 migrants enter so far this year.” He also says that Germany “...is expecting to take in 800,000 migrants in this year.” When people read the article, they realize that what is going on must be bad enough for hundreds of thousands of people to want to flee their own country to enter another European country.
For decades, some Americans have wanted to believe that immigrants are the cause and effect of many problems that has happened in America. They have came up with many accusations to try to convince others that immigrants pose a threat to the physical, the social and the economic welfare of natives. They have wanted others to believe immigration causes harm towards America's economy, market wages, and the high unemployment rates for natives. But in reality immigrants do not “take American jobs” and, in fact, has convinced many researchers that immigrants has promoted economic growth over the years (The Conversation).
Thousands and thousands of migrants have begun to flood into the European countries. With immigration numbers higher than ever, these countries have begun to search for solutions. Some countries have considered closing their borders , many are beginning to show violence to keep people out. As always, there is a much better solution other than using violence. The Europe Migration Policy needs to be adjusted to current needs and these countries need to work together to create better opportunities for the immigrants and refugees seeking safety.
Immigration is not always a perfect journey. Many immigrants decide to come here seeking better work opportunities, happiness and freedom. Many of them dream of living in the Promised Land and many times that dream comes true. And the other times, reality becomes way more different than the dream. Every year there are hundreds of deaths along the Mexico the United States border for those who try to cross the border without authorization. And the number of border crossing deaths increases every year. Causes of these deaths include, heat strokes, dehydration and hyperthermia. Many Americans are frustrated with the immigration in the United States and many are against it. Immigrants are often accused of taking jobs away from actual Americans,
Immigration policy has become a major issue severely debated amongst Americans, political leaders and policy makers. Many have written articles about the causes and effects of illegal and legal immigration. This section focuses on local and scholarly information about the problem. The examination of the various literatures could expose major issues and better methods available that may assist the passage of the current immigration Bill before the Congress.
If no one takes responsibility for this crisis, it will likely never truly be solved, but it is such a multi-faceted event that it is hard to know which approach would work. Some believe that “destroying the smugglers’ boats would enable EU countries to destruct the lucrative business models of the networks,” but this approach also “could result in unwanted loss of life”(Coleman 1). In the same vein, other ideas that have been discussed include sending the boats back to where they came from, boosting navy patrols, or simply allowing them to continue coming the way they have been. All of these thoughts come with their own major problems, such as “injecting [the refugees] straight back into the danger that they’ve fled,” more pirate attacks on naval patrols, or controversial facilitation plans for future migration, respectively (Coleman 2-3). But however they wish to attack the problem, we must agree that “‘this is a humanitarian emergency that involves us all and responses to it must be more holistic,’” as said by Federico Soda, of the IOM (Maguire et al). Perhaps stopping the problems at the source would be preferable, but with the instability and civil wars continuing in both Africa and the Middle East, that solution doesn’t appear to be in the near future. Therefore, this leaves the EU to sort out the dangerous transportation and humanitarian efforts for the migrants by itself, if its countries can manage to work
Immigrants are not the issue, education is. Although many American born citizens receive great opportunities of education many do not take them. On the other hand, immigrants come from a low opportunity background since most of the teen’s parents did not have the opportunity to get an education this makes immigrant students strive and have an increased motivation than most. In the next decade the immigrant population will increase by 20% which means economic expansion. More people the more money, leading to economic growth.
Imagine you are an immigrant who just arrived in America. You have almost no money and the only people you know in a thousand mile radius are part of your family. You have to find a source of income, a place to live, and do so many more things to get yourself on your feet. We have learned from the four pieces that, when immigrants in the real world migrate to America they face challenges and have to adjust to them.
Bombs are destroying crowded cities, many violate human rights. The U.N estimates about 6.6 million have been displaced and are now living in underfunded camps, basic necessities like food and medical care are scarce. The Syrian refugees who have been fleeing are entering or living in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey. Many refugees are attempting the dangerous trip across the Mediterranean Sea from Turkey to Greece, in hopes to find a better future in Europe. Although, refugees seek a better life many still face challenges along the way across the sea because they pay a lot of money to get across, their transporters may rape them or rob them from their money and leave them abdon afterword, and the sea may have terribles storms to come
It was reported by United Nations that more than 300,000 migrants have set out from North America and the Middle East on the Mediterranean Sea for Europe this year, which is more by 40 percent than in all of the last year. In addition to that, “on any given day now, hundreds of people, perhaps thousands, are drifting in ships or clinging to boats that are little more than inflatable rafts and in a recent 24hour period, the Greek coast guard rescued a thousand people in the Aegean Sea” (Borgia ,2015). And those are children and old people, Middle-aged parents with their possessions and their kids on their backs, professionals who have left their jobs and homes behind, and laborers whose neighborhoods and industries have collapsed in wars (Borgia
There is a huge migrant crisis called the European migrant crisis, the situation is intensifying and getting worse so the us is trying to decide whether or not to allow more Syrians to come to the united states and settle here. other countries like Sweden and Germany offered to also take some of the migrants. Another consideration by thr US is that it would be a good idea to start refugee settlements. currently the united states limited the amount of migrants to 1,500 a year, only a small portion of the thousands who have left the war torn country. Human rights activists and critics have said that the united states has not done enough to end the violence that has made the Syrians flee out of the country. On Sunday, pope Francis called catholic
Some people are trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea and pay the smugglers a lot just to drift with hundreds of other people on a rubber raft. Many times it goes horribly wrong and the boat sinks. On some of the boats they have a basement where also refugees are locked in, so when the boat does sink they cant get out and don't have a chance. This is why so many people drown. The Mediterranean Sea is a wild one, The Italians are there with a big Navy ship to protect or catch the refugees before they drown.
However, the recent resolution in the EU is not enough. There is still a massive amount of work to be done in the long term and from the European side of things there are several courses of action to take. From Italy’s point of view, the circumstances are an urgent problem. Italy does not know what to do with all the unemployed immigrants who land on Sicily’s shores because in the demographic these newly arrived young men fall under, there is 40% national unemployment. Those people are piling up in detention centers waiting to be processed, rendering an entire workforce useless. Due to this, amendments have been proposed for the Dublin Regulations so that immigrants can apply for asylum in countries other than the ones they land in. Like the
In southern Europe this year alone 103,000 refugees have crossed over the Mediterranean Sea and into Europe. That evens out to about roughly 600 refugees a day. Blowing last year’s total out of the park with a seemly tiny total of 34,000. The dramatic increases of refugees entering Europe have none the less added a very large burden on Europe’s migration troubles. Those 103,000 have risked their lives to be free from their home countries mainly on stolen, flimsy, and makeshift boats. In Greece alone 48,000 refugees have on the shores, the UNHCR is stepping up in Greece and southern Italy as a response to the population increase and the refugees arriving illegally. In late May in one weekend over 6,000 sub-Saharan Africans arrived on Italian shores from fishing boats and rubber dinghies from Libya, bringing the total refugees arriving in Italy to a large sum of 54,000.
In the globalized world of today, the way the systems of the planet operate could be described as ebbs and flows, because there is no end point and no isolated system. Whether it is the global economy or pattern of weather, there is always a widespread exchange of interactions and ripple effects. One such example is migration, which is simply a flow of what earth has an abundance of: humans. That is the subject of this investigation, specifically migration in the Mediterranean region, an area of the world so flooded with immigrants and refugees that it is in crisis.
