Ronald Wilson Reagan, born on February 6, 1911 to Nelle Wilson and John Edward ("Jack") Reagan in the town of in Tampico, Illinois, was the oldest man ever to be elected President of the United States. His family settled in Dixon, Illinois in 1920. After graduating from Dixon High School in 1928, Reagan attended Eureka (Illinois) College where he majored in economics and sociology. In 1937, Reagan was “discovered” by an agent for Warner Brothers and offered a seven-year contract as an actor. He moved to Hollywood and made about fifty movies. He divorced his first wife, actress Jane Wyman, in 1949 and married actress Nancy Davis on March 4, 1952. Reagan was elected Screen Actors Guild President in 1947 and served until 1952 and again from 1959-1960. Also in 1947, he testified before the House concerning Communist influences in Hollywood. Reagan was elected to Governor of California and served from 1967-1975. He also enlisted with the Army Reserve from 1942 to 1945 and was called to active duty after Pearl Harbor. He rose to the rank of Captain but never took part in any combat. He remained stateside, narrating training films and was in the Army Air Force First Motion Picture Unit. On October 27, 1964, Reagan made a television speech entitled, “A Time for Choosing”, supporting Republican Barry Goldwater launched Ronald Reagan’s political career.
