Rome's Beginning: The Beginning Of Ancient Rome

The rise and fall of one of the greatest empires known to man, the Roman republic, were caused by several key factors. Three of which were the decline of monarchy within the empire, foreign conquests and expansion of the growing empire, and political battles between powerful officials.

Rome’s Origin Story The legend goes that there is a king named Numitor. Numitor has a younger brother who steals the throne and forces Rhea Silvia, Numitor’s daughter, to be a virgin so no one can take the throne from him. Mars (Ares) comes and rapes Rhea Silvia while she sleeps. She becomes pregnant with twins named Romulus and Remus. Rhea Silvia is thrown into the river while Romulus and Remus are put in a reed basket and floated down river to die.

The beginnings of early Rome, as laid out by Titus Livius in The Founding of the City, can be seen as a complex network of foundations that eventually led to the great strength and prosperity of the city. A foundation in the context of Roman history is an event that profoundly affects the course of political, societal, or cultural transformation. Although the first true founding occurred in 753 BC when Romulus killed Remus to claim power as a monarch, it is evident that there were other events that contributed to the development of Rome. The peaceful transition of the monarchy from Romulus to Numa chronicled by Livy in Book I.17.19-30 exemplifies the first sharing of power between the Senate and the people of Rome that would serve as a foundation for Rome’s realignment into a republic nearly 200 years later.

Rome’s creation myth begins with the story of Romulus and Remus, the tragic story of twin brothers who were born into nobility, nearly killed as newborns, and who ultimately engage in conflict resulting the death of one and the founding of an empire by the other. Rome’s creation myth tells the story of a mythical leader who, against all odds, triumphs, and as he prevails, so does Rome.

Slide 3: Romulus and Remus are the founders of Rome. They are the twin sons of Mars who is the god of war. As babies a king left put them in a basket and sent them down the Tiber River. A she-wolf found them and raised the twins as her own. Once they got older the boys crushed the king who left them in the basket. Romulus and Remus decided to form Rome near the Tiber River. Soon after founding the city, Romulus killed Remus to become Rome’s first king.

He is the son of Tiberius Gracchus the Elder and his mother was Cornelia Africana. In the beginning of the video it begins with show Tiberius Gracchus the Elder at his death ceremony he looked ill and quite pale with white foggy eyes with flies flying around him and Rome did a ceremony of his death. Before him was Gracchus sitting in a throne like chair and there were five dancers wearing a molded mask of Tiberius Gracchus the Elder’s face, like studied in class. Surprisingly, today, some inventions,beliefs, and ideas, are still around today, even some derived from Ancient Greek and Roman era. Both civilizations had extraordinary legacies that still have an enduring impact on the world, some of these discoveries were founded years back, usually around in the B.C and B.C.E times. Both Greek and Rome’s discoveries are very impressive, but Ancient Rome’s discoveries made a bigger impact on the world today, because of their legacies. These legacies include, checks and balances-3 branches/veto, twelve tables-rule of law, roads, aqueducts, and the spread of Christianity.

The fall of the Roman Empire is one of the most important and world-shaping events in history, but it provides more than just an interesting study of the past, it also holds many important lessons for Americans and the western world today.

The Roman Republic began in 509 B.C.E. with the overthrow of the Etruscan monarchy. In 27 B.C.E the Roman Empire began with Octavian Caesar becoming the emperor, this ended almost 500 years of republican self-government. There is much debate over why Rome became so powerful so quickly. Many think it had to do with Rome's military strength. Others think that it was because Rome knew of and controlled most of the trade routes. Still others believed it had to do with the technology that was advanced during the Roman Republic. All of these factors played significant roles, but which one played the most important role?

Roman religion is set in stone as originating in the year 753BC, along with the foundation of Rome itself on 21st April, 753BC. On that day each year, the Romans celebrated the traditional festival of the Parilia (the festival was aimed at cleansing both shepherds and sheep), in honour of the god/goddess of the shepherds and sheep. The legend of the founding by Romulus explains how Numitor of Alba Longa, the local king, was thrown out by his younger brother Amulius. The only way to secure his position as king, Amulius murdered Numitors sons and the forced Numitors daughter, Rhea Silvia, to become a vestal virgin. He did this to prevent her from reproducing, for the time being. However the God Mars slept with Rhea while she was sleeping, resulting in her giving birth to twins names Romulus and Remus. Romulus, who then went on to found Rome and its religion. The Romans had many more gods, both men and women, whom they held in high regard, just like Romulus.

Walking around the streets of Rome all you could see for miles was pure bliss, there was so much life and energy to take in and enjoy. Since, I was younger, my mother would tell me stories of Rome and the beauty of the city. As I arrived, I was filled with excitement and nervousness, the culture was thriving all around me, I could not contain myself. When I was walking, the only thing to come to mind was the culture, it moved me, it made me feel alive. Everyone was happy and busy running around, all around me was prosperity and creativity. One good example of how the desire for power, its preservation, and its downfall affected individuals and their states, can all be found in the classical civilization of Rome. I will talk about how Rome rose to power due to weak neighbors, how it kept that power through periods of conflict and peace, and how it fell to division and invaders. One of the reasons the classical civilization of Rome had came to power was because it had weak neighbors. Since Rome was founded by Latin people on a river in the center of Italy, it gave them a good chance to control all of Italy.
