Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both have a lot in common as well as major differences that set them apart. Although West Side Story is a direct rendition of Shakespeare's original play, many of the themes and symbols are altered to fit the modern perspective. The characters have a direct correlation to each other, yet racial issues give them a new light. Many of the events also reflect each other, yet small differences give them uniqueness. West Side Story differs from Romeo and Juliet in characterizations, plot sequences, and themes.
The text Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and the text west side story by Arthur Laurent’s deals with the main themes of love and conflict. The two stories are similar in multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart. The author explore (other themes) family, friendship, and hate. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story about two young lovers who are forced to be estranged as a result of their feuding families. The play is about their struggle to contravene fate and create a future together. As such, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would try and emulate Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is
The plots of Pyramus and Thisbe and The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet are very similar to one another. For example, it says directly in Pyramus and Thisbe: “But marriage was forbidden by their parents. Yet there’s one thing that parents can’t prevent: The flame of love that burned within them” (Ovid’s Pyramus and Thisbe 11-13). This directly correlates with the plot of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, with Shakespeare writing “The exchange of thy love’s faithful vow for mine. I gave thee mine before thou didst request it” (Shakespeare II.ii. 127-128). This shows that both couples in each story are in love, which shows a parallel in plot structure. Furthermore, Pyramus and Thisbe also has another plot similarity with The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet: the death of each couple in the

The love between the two couples was so strong that they were would die for their lovers. Although, the sequence of events that lead to the tragic endings of these stories have their differences as well.
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.
Pyramus and Thisbe and Romeo and Juliet are two tragic romance stories that are comparable in many ways. The similar concepts and elements reflected in the two works portray themes of love and tragedy, while also expressing the same types of characters and events. The works of the two writers, Ovid and Shakespeare, were written in completely different time periods, but are remarkably comparable in the senses of character purpose, elements, theme, and events.
Ovid’s Pyramus & Thisbe, and William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet are both stories about ill-fated love. With each story we can see that there is a tragic couple, the female, Thisbe represents Juliet, while the male, Pyramus represents Romeo, vise versa for each. In Pyramus & Thisbe, the two lovers communicate through the small chink in the wall. In Romeo & Juliet, the two lovers communicate through the Nurse by sending messages back and forth. In Romeo & Juliet, the meeting place is Friar Lawrence’s Cell, this represents the Tomb of Ninus in Pyramus & Thisbe, which is where they met up. Lastly, the deceiver in both stories is the main reason the tragedies happened.
Act III, scene i of Romeo & Juliet is the climax of the story, in which two fights are portrayed, one between Mercutio and Tybalt, and one between Romeo and Tybalt, which lead to the deaths of both Mercutio and Tybalt. When portrayed in film form in Zeffirelli’s 1968 version, and Luhrmann’s 1996 version, there are many differences, and similarities. While these two films are telling the same story, it is the differences between the two that lead to Luhrmann’s 1996 version being superior. Due to its more dramatic settings, and character interactions and actor portrayals.
They grew up in a city named Babylon, and lived near one another, unlike Romeo and Juliet. In fact, they lived so close to each other that their homes shared a common wall. This wall was their only form of communication. Going against their parents wishes, they approached a tomb to meet by. Thisbe was awaiting her love when a bloody mouthed lion lurked upon the area. She fled and dropped her cloak, which the lion proceeded to tear up. When Pyramus arrived he killed himself at the sight of the bloody remains of Thisbe. “Before him lay the bloodstain shreds of the cloak and clear in the dust were the tracks of the lioness. The conclusion was inevitable” (Ovid 488). Unlike Romeo, Pyramus used his sword to commit suicide. The storylines of the two are similar. However, where they lived, and how the boys killed themselves were different. Finally the cause of both teen deaths was at the fault of two completely unrelated
Some of the greatest writers of all time actually found the start of their best ideas and works from other artists. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, for example, used the same archetype that the Greek writer Ovid used in his short story, “Pyramus and Thisbe.” In each story, two star-crossed lovers meet against the will of their parents, which soon leads to the pair’s demise. However, more than just the archetypical plot is shared between these two masterpieces. The tragedies of Romeo and Juliet and “Pyramus and Thisbe” both have their own representations of lack of communication, misinterpretation, and impassable obstacles for crucial information.
The story of Romeo and Juliet and primis and Thisbe they are alike in some ways they are the same and can relate to each other and the way they are connected is the fact that they are taking place around the time of the same age but Romeo was clearly older that Juliet but in the case of primis and Thisbe un like Romeo they were separated and they could only speak through a wall and Romeo and Juliet could somewhat see each other. The similarities between the two of them is the fact that they all end up dying at the end and the fact that they all fall in love and they all are too young for each other and they in some cases are the same and they can’t see each other and they must use other people or with a wall to talk to each other. The difference
Last but not least, in both texts of Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe, they are very similar as they both end with terrible, terrible tragedies. Both these readings are known for being tragedies, which make them both so memorable. In Romeo and Juliet, Act V Scene III lines 307-310 the Prince says these concluding words, “Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things; some shall be pardoned, and some punished; for never was there a story of more woe, than this od Juliet and her Romeo.” That itself sums up that it is one of the greatest tragedies known to man. The same ending through misunderstandings leads to Pyramus and
Both stories characters don’t listen to authority because they believe that nobody understands their love. In “Pyramus and Thisbe” by Publius Ovidius Naso, Pyramus and Thisbe get scolded by their parents and forbidden to see each other. Of course the two lovers believe they can’t be separated because their love is way too strong. In “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, the families of both characters chose them different fates. Paris was to be the newly wed husband of the young Juliet.
